01/29 — Some writers complain about Super Bowl Media Days, but as Laveranues Coles might say, "It is what it is." You just have to laugh at some of the things that take place on the floor of the stadium five days before the NFL crowns each year's champion.
Today's event was marked for better or worse by two women from Mexico's TV Azteca who appeared to be ready to marry any football player on the floor of University of Phoenix Stadium that would say yes. One was even ready for the altar, dressed in frilly white — although the top was low-cut and the dress was high-cut — and already wearing a wedding ring.
That set the stage for one of the most bizarre footage of the event. You see, the woman in white apparently had a Brady Bunch fetish. She proposed to Tom Brady at his podium, well-attended by mainstream football media. And she also proposed to Kyle Brady, the ninth overall pick of the 1995 draft by the Jets who these days is a New England backup TE.
Brady is very religious, but he also showed his four years of New York media training by handling the on-camera situation with the woman in white.
"Hello, baby, you want to marry me?" she cooed. Then she popped the question again, in Spanish. To which Brady replied:
"Tengo una esposa. Lo siento." I have a wife. I'm sorry.
"No problema," she said. "I'm better than Gisele Bundchen."
You see, she thought it was Tom Brady she was talking to. Or maybe not.
Shortly after, Kyle Brady noiselessly shifted gears when he was approached by an interviewer from the Christian Broadcasting Network, who had questions about how Kyle balances playing football with his belief in God.
Kyle remembered his time with the Jets fondly, even if things weren't perfect during his two seasons under Rich Kotite and two more in the Bill Parcells program.
"The memories weren't all so bad," Brady said. "There were some rough ones in the very beginning. Those first two years, we were 4-28. I was supposed to be one of the guys to help the Jets come around and be a better team, and it wasn't working out that way.
"Then Coach Parcells and Coach Belichick got the ship righted. Anytime you're winning in the NFL, it makes it all a lot better. The AFC Championship Game after the 1998 season, that was a nice year, a fun year."
But in another of the strange and interesting storylines in this game, Brady credits Tom Coughlin, now the Giants coach he's trying to beat, with drawing out his full potential when he moved on to Jacksonville as an unrestricted free agent in 1999.
"My first four years with the Jets, I was used in various capacities and in different ways," Brady said. "With Coach Coughlin, I finally had the opportunity to be a true multifaceted tight end. ... He gave me my greatest opportunity as a football player."
And this year the Patriots provided the opportunity, which turns out to be playing in the Super Bowl and going undefeated in the process. Perhaps Brady will even catch a touchdown pass from that other Brady.
"Sure, as a guy who has an 80s number on, you hope you might have that opportunity," he said. "That'd be fun. But the ultimate goal is a team goal and that's to win the game."
Where's Ware? He's here
Coughlin also gave Danny Ware an opportunity by signing the rookie free agent RB off the Jets' practice squad to the Giants' active roster in November. And while Ware has been inactive for all three Big Blue playoff games, he has played in the NFL, most recently contributing a special teams tackle in the Giants' Week 17 loss to the Patriots.
And Ware was getting a little face time in the national media. When I approached him, he had just finished being interviewed by Kellie Pickler, the former American Idol finalist who worked Media Day for Tonight Show footage. She even supplied Ware with some designer eyeblack — the black strip under his right eye read "Kellie" and under the left it read "Pickler."
"It's going great," Ware said of life as a Giant. "I went from over there to over here and we're in the Super Bowl. It's just been a great experience." He said with the Giants, "It seems a lot simpler, a lot more laid-back" than it was with the Jets.
It's really a no-brainer for a player to leave practice-squad money and scout-team work on one team for active-roster money and the chance to play in NFL games on another, but Ware said "it was a hard decision at first" to leave the Jets, and the big reason for that was his Green & White teammates.
"I like the guys over there. Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, all those guys, they were my leaders," he said. Now he follows Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw ... and perhaps one day, perhaps Sunday, will help the Giants carry the load.
Radio-Active on newyorkjets.com
We overcame some technical difficulties with our radio plans, so now you can listen to my radio interview with Eric Allen, which we just put up on our Multimedia Home page. We went over some of the highlights of Media Day and talked about some Jets appearances at the different Super venues here in the Valley of the Sun. We plan to go live with radio interviews again Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons after the media availability with the Patriots and Giants is done for the day and then have the audio archived for you to check out at your leisure. Take a listen and let us know what you think.

Wed, January 30, 2008 - 9:40am EST"I hope the Jets are busy. Lots of work to be done on Offensive and Defensive line. I want to see us in the superbowl in 2010."
Frank Said:
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 9:41am EST"Interesting comment by Ware "It's a lot simpler and more laid back". Hey Drew are you listening? This exactly confirms what I have been saying all year. Mangini needs to lighten up and let his players play. If he doesn't modify his approach we will have a repeat of last year and be looking for a new head coach."
Drew Said:
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 11:48am EST"I still remember chanting "WE WANT SAPP" right before we took Kyle. What a horrible pick for this was for our franchise. Really nice guy but not a big time TE that should have been drafted in the 1st round. ...especially that high. I think the Kotite years were some of the worst for any franchise....ever!! At least he gave us Wayne Chrebet."
Michael Said:
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 6:47pm EST"hey Jets Fan i want to hear what guys want to be our special teams coach.Write back Jet fans and Ira too "
Drew Said:
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 7:30pm EST"Frank....It seems that you just will never get off this...so again. The Coughlin and Mangini situations are totally different. Manigni had success coaching this way in 06 (year1). So why would he change his approach now, because he had a bad year? Coughlin was a lame duck coach grasping to not get fired. His team was the 5 seed in a bad conference before his QB and defense got hot. End of story!"
Drew Said:
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 8:05pm EST"To further educate my friend Frank...D Ware was claimed by the Giants in December. They were preparing for a playoff run. The Jets on the other hand were struggling to get wins. Which franchise would be more laid back?? Of course the Giant situation was better at that time...Mangini took over for a players coach (Herm) and had to change the attitude. It seemed to work in 2006? Or did you forget??"
Frank Said:
Thu, January 31, 2008 - 9:55am EST"Drew my boy TC made the changes before the season not in December. The season turned around for them after their first 2 losses. Teams with talent always respond to a new HC the first year. The Jets lost in the first round last year and the NYG are in the Superbowl! so there is absolutely zero comparison. This team underperformed badly all year and that is Mangini's fault he needs to lighten up."
Row Said:
Thu, January 31, 2008 - 9:26pm EST"We just could not score. Mangini settled for field goals instead of winning, there was no effort to establish the run, our OC made bad calls in clutch situations. I don't know about you guys, but I don't want to see this next year. We need Schottenheimer gone, he cannot make the calls, he cannot coach a well managed offense! Mangini doesn't need to lighten up, he needs some coaches with character!"
