File Under: Darrelle Revis, Sean Gilbert, Mike Ditka, Pete Maravich, 40 time
04/28 — Here are some more nuggets pertaining to Pitt cornerback Darrelle Revis, the Jets' top draft pick.
Darrelle and Ty
Revis graduated from Aliquippa (Pa.) High School, 20 miles outside of Pittsburgh. Aliquippa sounds familiar to Jets followers and sports fanatics. He is the nephew of DE Sean Gilbert, the former first-round pick of the Rams in 1992 who grew up there, too.
Ty Law calls Aliquippa his hometown, as does "Iron" Mike Ditka, as did "Pistol" Pete Maravich. In fact, Ditka played basketball for Press Maravich, Pete's dad, at Aliquippa High before the Maraviches relocated to North Carolina.
"Me and Ty talk all the time," Revis said of Law, who had those amazing 10 interceptions in his one season in green in 2005. "Ty will be in the Hall of Fame in the near future. I look up to him. He played at the Jets, and I’m going to continue to talk to him even more just to get more insight into things like the NFL process so he can help me out. He’s taught me things from technique to just being a positive person off the field and doing good business on the field."
Green Slash III
Move over, Brad Smith and Stacy Tutt. His senior season at Aliquippa, Revis played quarterback, tailback, receiver, cornerback and kick returner, which earned him a frequently repeated quasi-title as "one of Pennsylvania's most versatile talents." Did we mention he was also a state Class AA first-team basketball player as a senior?
Timing's Everything
What is Revis' 40 time? NFLDraftScout.com said he was clocked in 4.54 seconds on campus, but that slow time apparently isn't accurate. In Pitt's Pro Day on March 16, the Jets and many other teams timed him in a pair of 40s in the 4.38-4.40 range. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that scouts were impressed with his performance that day.
"It's safe to say," Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith said, "that he's a scholarship player."
Actually, the slower time may have come from an outside projection that Revis would run in the 4.53 range at the Pro Day.
"That's a prediction," Revis told a reporter that day. "I knew I was faster. When it's your time to stand and perform, perform at your best. That's what I did today. My combine was today."
First-round trades
The Jets have made seven previous trades of a first-round draft pick since 1990 before doing it again Saturday in trading up with Carolina from No. 25 to No. 14 to take Revis:
1993 — Moved from the third pick of the draft to the fourth in a swap with the then-Phoenix Cardinals, who also sent RB Johnny Johnson to the Jets. The Cards took RB Garrison Hearst, the Jets tabbed LB Marvin Jones.
1994 — The next year, the Jets leapfrogged ahead of New Orleans from 13 to 12 to select CB Aaron Glenn. The Saints went with DE Joe Johnson.
1997 — Bill Parcells traded his first-round pick twice, going from first overall to sixth with the Rams, then from sixth to eighth with the Buccaneers, winding up with LB James Farrior at No. 8 and RB Leon Johnson in the fourth round.
2000 — Part of the "Four Aces" maneuvering, they sent their 16th overall pick (plus their second-rounder) to San Francisco for the 49ers' 12th overall, with which they drew their first ace, DE Shaun Ellis.
2001 — The Jets gave up their 19th overall plus two second-day picks to climb to Pittsburgh's 16th slot and snatch WR Santana Moss.
2003 — The Green & White traded their own first-rounder (No. 22, which Chicago used on QB Rex Grossman) and Washington's first (No. 13) plus a fourth-rounder to scramble to the Bears' fourth spot and grab DT Dewayne Robertson.
2005 — The Jets' first-round selection, No. 26, and a sixth-rounder went to Oakland for a second-rounder (Mike Nugent), two sixths and TE Doug Jolley.
