12/30 — The Jets win the OT coin toss, much to the approval of Brad Kassell, who lets out a Texas-style "Awwright!" over ref Larry Nemmers' mike. Soon Leon Washington squirms to the Jets 30 and OT is under way.
Thomas Jones bursts off right guard for 9 yards, then Kellen Clemens keeps and the Jets' first — and, they hope, the only — series of the fifth period continues. Then a nice play-fake and a 13-yard out-route completion to Jerricho Cotchery against Ty Law, and the Jets are at the Chiefs 45.
Jones does another nice job flowing left, then cutting right for 8 more yards. Clemens keeps again for another first down to the 34. Mike Nugent is kicking into the net out of Ben Graham's hold on the sideline.
Then a draw to Jones and another nice burst for 10 yards to the 24. And, when the Chiefs stack up against the run, Jones with a spin off the right side, saving a loss and getting a yard. Then Jones gets 8 more yards. But this time Clemens can't pick up the sneak conversion.
So on comes Nugent to attempt the third game-winning field goal of his career, from 33 yards out close to the middle of the field. First a timeout by KC, then Nugent kicks — and hits!
But wait. Holding against the Jets! It's not over. Now Nugent will try for the winner from 43 yards out, still just slightly right of the center of the field.
And there's the snap, and there's — the Chiefs' final timeout, trying to ice Nuge once again.
And Nugent hits again. This one is a little more of a line drive but still solid. And the Jets pull it out.
Jets 13, Chiefs 10 (OT)
The Jets finish the season at 4-12, same record as the Chiefs. It's not official but it appears that the win has secured the sixth pick of the April draft for the Green & White ... not to mention a small shred of pride and relief that the Jets could pull this one out against their old coach, Herm Edwards, and against another team that made it to the playoffs last year and fell on hard times this year.
I'll be back in a short while with a final postgame blog from the Jets locker room.

Big Ed Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 8:00pm EST"Wouldn't it be ironic to win the battle (against the Chiefs) and lose the war; that's if Chris Long goes to the Chiefs. The Jets didn't show me anything. They beat a bad team by a few points and had to do it in overtime, this wasn't even a moral victory. There's no reason to be excited about NEXT season. Two years in a row the offense has stunk. Time for a new coordinator."
Bill Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 8:02pm EST"Godd Luck Westhoff. You have been an amazing coach. You will be missed"
Angry Jets Fan Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 8:06pm EST"All you had to do today is lose! It isn't hard you guys have done it all season long. When it actually helps to lose, now you wanna win? I can't figure this team out..."

Sun, December 30, 2007 - 8:36pm EST"Randy, I'm watching the game in a sports bar with my son & there are 3 other Jets fans around me.Nugent kicks the FG and we all shout out "what idiots". Why did we win a meaningless game when we could have had the #2 pick in the draft.I've never been more upset over a Jet win.Mangini & the team celebrate like they won the Superbowl & I felt sick. Me and my Jet brethren are stunned @ the stupidity."
Dunnie Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 9:02pm EST"WAY TO GO ... congrats on ending the year right with a win !!! Westoff ... you are amazing ... I hope you are still around as a consultant. Chad got a good look at the uniform he will be wearing next year. I love Chris Long but he will gone by the sixth pick ... we could trade up. Just heard that Faneca will be a Cardinal next year. We need an OL Guard. Its all on Mike T now. "
Joe Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 9:09pm EST"Did any of you really expect the players to lay down? There's personal pride at stake with your peers every time you take the field. Having said that, I sure wish they would have lost! The 6th pick won't bring anywhere near the picks that the 2-3 would. It figures, the only coach worth his paycheck is leaving. You are a GREAT coach, Mike W. The rest of you should quit. What an embarrasing year."
Dean Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 9:13pm EST"The 1 time Iroot for them to lose they win! They have now gone from picking 3rd to 6th,sounds like another loss to me! Idont want hear about always playing to win, ask those playoff teams sitting their starters"
Frank Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 9:25pm EST"As a player, or coach, you always try to win. No one plays to lose. "
Ira Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 9:54pm EST"Jeremy, I have no problem giving Schotty a pass. Clemens also missed some throws and ran out the pocket way too early and did not let plays develop. A better o-line will help for sure. The jury is still out on Clemens lets see what he does next year with more help."
Ira Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 9:59pm EST"Sorry but i am glad they won and the draft will play itself out. Good Luck to Westhoff and a speedy recovery. Woody for one is glad Noogie made that kick it saved him about 10 million $ or so. A # 3 pick would be about a 20-25 million $ signing compared to about 12 -15 for a #6. Now that McFadden is out of the picture sign L.Jordan to use as a short yardage back."

Sun, December 30, 2007 - 10:05pm EST"Randy when are Mangini Pressers this week?"
Randy Lange Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 10:24pm EST"Tom, we expect Eric Mangini to speak to reporters Monday at 1:30 p.m."
josh Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 10:10pm EST"first off we still have a top 5 pick beause other teams won today like atlanta and baltimore and the jets figured out what they need to do in the offseason. randy do you know where the jets draft position will be?"
Randy Lange Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 10:26pm EST"Josh, the NFL won't release the official draft order until Monday but all the computations say the Jets will draft sixth overall. Their strength of schedule was stronger than Kansas City, Oakland and Atlanta, all of which have finished with identical SOS's and will engage in a three-way coin flip to determine the third through fifth picks."
Ira Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 10:20pm EST"Today Leon showed us why he was named the team MVP. he and Jones really do make up a good RB team. Congrats to Jones for rushing for 1119 yds behind this o-line. He would've gone for 1400 yds if the line play was there. Cotchery another good game and shows us he is a #1 WR. Very surprised that Graham punted today. He had a real good game. Guess he and Kapinos will compete next summer."
Xavion Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 10:39pm EST"Bah.. I cheered when I saw the holding flag. Im in agreement that this was the most disappointing win I have ever seen. I mean it would have been one thing if we blew them out of the water but it took 4 and a half quarters to score 13 pts to win a game against a really weak team. And all we got from it was a slide down 3 or 4 postions in the draft. This is a complete Joke"
Xavion Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 10:46pm EST"I could have sworn draft picks were liek gold in the NFL no its not a science but with higher picks it makes it easier do create the artwork. Dont get me wrong I didnt want them to tank the Game on purpose. But if you are gonna win this game it should have been an explosive exciting game. Scoring 30-40 pts. instead all we proved is that we are sorry and that KC is only a field goal worse "
Xavion Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 10:50pm EST"1 more thing. Jones Ran a lot better today than he has all year but Leon is still better and should get more carries than he does or have a more prominent role he deserved MVP this year he was the only playmaker all year well him and Coles but He passed caught & ran did it all today Our biggest plays this yr have come from him. He should be the starter next year hands down or at least more touches"
tom Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 11:10pm EST"sorry to be annoying randy but that would be his last one right? or will he do another one wednesday"
Randy Lange Said:
Mon, December 31, 2007 - 1:57am EST"Tom, as of now Eric Mangini's last news conference for a while will be later today (Monday) at 1:30 p.m. But check newyorkjets.com for any unscheduled news conferences with Coach Mangini or GM Mike Tannenbaum."
Larry Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 11:39pm EST"Today was the day to play our inexperienced players to see what they have. This was a no brainer as few Jet fans would have been upset at this and a loss. The win is painful in terms of the draft pick order. I thought Tangini was smarter than this. Ugh!"
Howard Said:
Sun, December 30, 2007 - 11:45pm EST"nice win today and i only believe you do play to win.i for sure would not want to see us just go though the motions out on the field.we should be able to trade some players before the draft to increase barginning power.the way mr t drafts im not worried about it. in the last 2 drafts we have picked some fantastic players i most certainly expect a bounce back year in 2008"
Dunnie Said:
Mon, December 31, 2007 - 11:20am EST"Ok .. once and for all Jones and Washington are awesome. Washington would sink as an every down back ... its that simple. He is not big enough for the job. So ... all those comparing teh two are insane ... T Jones is BY FAR a better feature back than Washington. Washington is BY FAR a better scat back / situation back than Jones. Period. No question about it."
JETS Draft Said:
Mon, December 31, 2007 - 1:10pm EST"The JETS have to get a REAL QB. CLEMENS looked TERRIBLE! CLEMENS stares down the receivers. Clemens totally telegraphs were he is going to throw the ball before he throws. CLEMENS looks lost out there! And don't waste the 6 pick on a running back. THOMAS JONES is a very good running back. Beside darfting a running back is no safe pick. Look how good REGGIE BUSH is doing."
Jets Fan Said:
Tue, January 1, 2008 - 8:57am EST"It took me a couple of days to gather my thoughts after that pathetic offensive performance, wow was that horrible. Clemens looks lost, Penny has to stay for at least a year until this kid matures. Aside from Mangold, our O line is horrible. Schottenhiemer should be fired, he is the root of these problems and I can't stand it."
Row Said:
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 4:19pm EST"First of all X, mostly agreed, but Jones ran for over 1100 yards. Leon hits the hole faster, and usually runs off tackle or on a sweep. Schotty made Jones run without a lead block right down the middle, setting 7 yds deep. Leon started several games with Schotty in 06 and didn't exactly produce. I want to thank the players for fighting for this win. Coaching is our weak point! DESEAN JACKSON JR #1"
Anonymous Said:
Tue, January 8, 2008 - 9:34pm EST"The Jets should trade Pennington, Vilma, their #1draft pick and anything else it takes to get Brady Quinn from Cleveland. Clemens is not the QB of the future so why wait. Vilma won't be missed, David Harris proved that. "

Sun, December 30, 2007 - 7:52pm EST"Ira, you still want to give a bye to SHOTTY? His best solution, best offensive play is a shovel pass, a shovel pass--come on? Nothing on the line and he comes up blank, scoring 13 against the Chiefs! D'Bust is pathetic he fell straight on his back a few times and had KC running for his life. KC should have been riding the pine all year--Penny was never the problem--it's all the O Line and SHOTTY"
