File Under: Thomas Jones, Kellen Clemens, Leon Washington, Wallace Wright, Dustin Colquitt

12/30 — The Green & White get things rolling with another gadget play, Leon Washington taking a direct snap as the QB, rolling right a few steps and hitting Wallace Wright for 36 yards to the KC-8.

Then with Jared Allen, who gets his second sack of the day, and Tamba Hali getting great upfield pressure, Brian Schottenheimer dials up another trick play that treats the Jets to first blood. Clemens shovels a short pass to Thomas Jones, who jukes, cuts back and slices into the end zone from 15 yards out. It's not a rushing TD — TJ still has one for the season — but it's Jones' second as a Jet.

Jets 7, Chiefs 0

The visitors get their first first down of the day but it takes a Jets personal foul to deliver it. As Dustin Colquitt punts, he's overrun by several Jets, with Brad Kassell appearing to crunch Colquitt without getting a piece of the ball. That gives KC a first down at its 49.

The Jets stop the Chiefs again, and then give up their first offensive first down on a fake punt, with former Jets safety Jon McGraw, the upback, taking the snap, turning upfield and just getting the 3 yards on fourth-and-3.

That's the only way the visitors can move the ball, apparently, because the Jets snuff three more Croyle passes, two for Gonzalez and one to Battle, forcing another Colquitt punt. But the Chiefs blow a golden opportunity to pin the Jets at their 2 when Rashad Barksdale slides and grabs the ball — with his knees on the goal line. Touchback.

The Green & White offense doesn't do much better from its 20, then with the rain and sleet falling more heavily, Ben Graham gets off one of those less effective punts, with a 3.2-second hang time. The punt goes 42 yards with a bounce, but Eddie Drummond fields it on the fly and takes it back 22 yards to the Jets 39.

If the Chiefs are going to make a game of this, here's a great chance with seven minutes left in the first half.

Croyle actually connects on a nifty slant with WR Jeff Webb despite tight coverage for 11 yards and the offense's first first down, but then KC bogs down again. On comes ageless K John Carney, in his 18th season, for a 40-yard field goal. He feathers it over the West end zone crossbar and the visitors are on the board.

Jets 7, Chiefs 3

Another short kickoff, this one to Wallace Wright so that Leon Washington can't return it, starts the Jets at their 32. Shortly, Jerricho Cotchery takes an end-around 16 yards, 14 of it after first contact with a nice spin move in traffic. J-Co also gathers in a 10-yard pass on second-and-3. And Washington takes an inside handoff 8 yards to set up fourth-and-a-foot outside the KC 25 at the two-minute warning. What will the Jets do?

They go for it, with the give to Jones getting the first down — barely. Then it's the Neon Leon show, with Washington making three changes of direction for a 14-yard run to the 11, then two more touches to the 4.

But Robert Turner, in at LG, false-starts, then Clemens rolls left and can find no one open so he heaves it into the first row of the East end zone. On comes Mike Nugent, who converts from 27 yards with 13 seconds left in the half.

Jets 10, Chiefs 3

A Drummond return to the 39 and a Croyle kneeldown end a muted but still succesful first half for the Green & White.

"Why do people say that KC has to run for his life everytime he has to pass chad looks relatively comfortable in the pocket, im not makin any excuses for the jets O-line they r still below par but chad deals with that and completes the majority of his passes"

"Mike, How do you get that CP has to go out of what you saw. He may be the best player on this team. You act like he played behind a good O-Line. You better hope they hold on to some of the good players because the Tangini regime will be gone after 08. Mangini does not understand the basic principle of offense (O-LINE O-LINE). In case you are wondering Brick is a bust."

"Have come to the conclusion that there is no quarterback controversy. Neither one is the answer. Chad doesn't have the arm and Clemens doesn't appear to have the composure in the pocket. A grim time for the Tanginis and the Jets fans. 2007 draft was a success, while 2006 looks more and more iffy. Mangold and Washington great picks. What happened to Brad Smith?"
