File Under: Eric Mangini, David Harris, Brad Smith, Mike Nugent
12/06 — David Harris' hot rookie season goes on. Today Harris got the first of his NFL awards when the league recognized him as the Defensive Rookie of the Month for November.
"I'm honored to win it," Harris said during today's locker room session. "I have to keep going in to work each day, keep going hard and take it one day at a time."
By the Jets coaching staff's breakdown, Harris' month, which began with his career-high 20-tackle game vs. Washington, produced 44 tackles in four games. What's most impressive about the tackle totals is that even though he had no tackles in the season's first two games and 16 through six games, he now leads the team with 82 tackles.
Also in November, Harris had two sacks and the forced fumble and recovery at Miami.
Head coach Eric Mangini praised Harris not for his singing voice but for his playcalling voice in the defensive huddle.
"It was important during training camp for him to work with the first group as well as the second group so they could hear his voice," Mangini said. "Jon was the voice for a long time. Now suddenly he isn't there. But I thought the work David got during training camp and even the OTAs was important. He's gotten better and better each week. There's a little more bass in his voice each week, he's a little more authoritative."
"I'm a quiet guy. I don't know where that's coming from," Harris said, explaining his basso profundo reputation as simply the result of "the more you play, the more you go out there with the guys, the more comfortable you get."
The only other time Jets were named Rookies of the Month came in 2004, when S Erik Coleman got the DROM award for September and Jonathan Vilma claimed it for November.
"The Hitman" is also in the running for the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week award, for which fans can vote, although in this tally Harris is well behind the leading vote-getter, Buffalo QB Trent Edwards, whose five field goal drives helped the Bills to a 17-16 road win over the Redskins.
Brad at the Controls
I mentioned the design and execution of Brad Smith's 19-yard touchdown reception from Kellen Clemens, and Smith today had to agree it was pretty neat.
"I think when we practiced that play, it always looked good," Smith said. "I can imagine how tough it is for defenses when we put Leon [Washington] at receiver or Jerricho [Cotchery] in the backfield and all that stuff."
But I also wanted to know if there was any difference for Smith when he actually was "the QB" for two of those gadget plays the Jets ran against the Dolphins.
Usually when Smith has handled the snap with the Jets, either Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens is also in the formation, as a "flanker" or a "tailback." And on one of those plays at Miami, Clemens was flanked wide. But on the other two, Smith was the only QB in the huddle.
"Those are all just part of the package," Smith said. "I hadn't even thought about it like that. It was pretty cool, though, I'll say that."
National Spotlight for Leon
Leon Washington has not been avoiding the media this week, but he has been scarce in the locker room as he has been doing some national TV interviews this week in advance of his run-in with the Browns and their own returner par excellence, Joshua Cribbs.
We'll have a feature on that battle on newyorkjets.com during Friday's news cycle, but if you have NFL Network on your cable system, you can get a glimpse of Washington, Cribbs, Devin Hester and others on tonight's weekly "Who Is ... " program that airs at 8 p.m.
Kudos for McCareins
Before we get to Cleveland, it should be noted that Justin McCareins' 51-yard reception from Kellen Clemens over the Dolphins' Will Allen at Miami was his longest in his four seasons as a Jet. Here are Justin's five 50-yard catches in his six-year career:
| Year | Team | Opp. | QB | Yards |
| 2003 | TEN | at HOU | Steve McNair | 73 |
| 2003 | TEN | at JETS | Steve McNair | t-59 |
| 2002 | TEN | vs. PIT | Steve McNair | 55 |
| 2007 | JETS | at MIA | Kellen Clemens | 51 |
| 2006 | JETS | at MIN | Chad Pennington | 50 |
Sweet 16 for Nugent
I'll have more on Mike Nugent's role at Miami and heading into Cleveland on Saturday, but what may have gone by the boards was that the Dolphins game was one of Nugent's best as a pro. He scored a career-high 16 points by going 4-for-4 in both field goals and PATs, and in fact scored sweet 16 in a game for only the second time since his college career began at Ohio State. (Do you Buckeyes fans remember when that was?)
Nuge also muscled five of his kickoffs to the goal line or into the end zone against the Dolphins, another career high, which helped control rookie speed man Ted Ginn Jr.

Thu, December 6, 2007 - 5:31pm EDT"One of the reasons we have been able to blitz more is b/c of our corners being able to play man to man. Poteat hasn't been spectacular, but has filled in nicely. The safety help has really progressed. I have seen most of the improvement on D, our O is the worry. Really haven't seen many open WR's. It might be the short routes, but we need to work on it. Runs on 1st down need to improve. Go Jets"
cactus hugger Said:
Thu, December 6, 2007 - 6:52pm EDT"The "gadget plays" should be used more, specially on first down. I'd like to see Chad worked in to add to the confusion for the opposition's D. I could see him lined up as a WR (with either KC or Brad at QB), catch a pitch-out and throw a pass real quick. I think we need to use ALL our weapons. CP could make big contributions; but we need to keep KC as QB. Let's dazzle 'em with razzle-dazzle!"
Wayne Said:
Thu, December 6, 2007 - 7:37pm EDT"The D looks great since Harris took over. Him and Revis are two great additions Blitzing has been more effective and mixing up 4-3 & 3-4 to confuse opposing offenses. Now if O line could get it together, we'd be a major threat. Hope Schotty keeps mixing it up on O and pulls out all the stops to keep drives going and keep our D off the field. Looking forward to the Brown this weekend. Go Jets!"

Thu, December 6, 2007 - 8:15pm EDT"Very well deserved by Harris. Hope he get Defensive Rookie of the Year. Nice to see McCareins long plays. That 59 yarder for a TD in the Monday Night Game in 03 i still remember him running down the sideline right past Herm. Thats his strength is to get those instead of over the middle type catches. The last time the Jets beat the Browns McCareins had the winning TD. Maybe he will again this week."
Randy Lange Said:
"True, Ira, McCareins caught an 11-yard pass from Quincy Carter with 5:32 to play in the Jets' 10-7 win at Cleveland in 2004."
Ira Said:
Thu, December 6, 2007 - 8:25pm EDT"Randy, Nugent has really come on strong as of late and his distance like you said on KO's has improved. He will have to be carefull with his KO's this week with the dangerous Cribbs receiving them. Hope he puts a few in the endzone. But thats a good thing because the more he is KO that means the more the Jets are scoring. "

Thu, December 6, 2007 - 11:15pm EDT"Congrats to DH!!What else can I say about David Harris? This guy was a can't miss coming out of Michigan. Very fired up to watch him man the middle for years to come....I thought we got a little too cute in the redzone with the gadget plays. I liked the idea but we did try B Smith at QB alot in doen there. "

Fri, December 7, 2007 - 3:06am EDT"i was listening to coach on thursday and come next year he have to do something with J.vilam he cant play MLB in this system because he is not strong or big enough to get off his blocks, we either put him at OLB where he is more free to be himself like the 4-3 allow him to be, but if he dont want to play that spot trade him to a 4-3 dfense for a pass rusher, jet can aford to keep trade in offseason"
Ablity Mouwon Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 3:16am EDT"i think Jon.V will love to play OLB than we can draft a OLB on the other side and cut loose all those moneymaking underacieving first round draft pick and draft a defesive line man and cut loose D.Rob and keep the young CJ mobly and our defense is set. and on offense we need to Gets younger and faster reciever and cut loose justin and we need to find a indenty i think the best for us is RUN& GUN "
uncle joe Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 7:06am EDT"I think the bye has nothing to do with the defenses surge of late, but rather the fact that Suttun can call what he wants because HITMAN is there. He dont just tackle, grab a guy play around with him,He wipes them out.Once he locks in on you its over.Rediculous that Trent Edwards is the man for getting 5 fieldgoal drives.Love Rhodes lately, but HITMAN is the face of this D now."
Jets Fan Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 7:52am EDT"It is hard to imagine that Vilma, who was a monster playmaker in the 4-3, was almost invisible in the 3-4 scheme. Would Harris be rendered invisible in the 4-3? If Mangini could find a happy median that brings out the best in both players, we would have one of the best tandems in the NFL. "
Ira Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 9:28am EDT"UncleJoe, The defensive surge has more to do with they feel comfortable with Revis now with single coverage and bringing up Rhodes to the line. Also Harris, Elam,Mosley and Pouha's play has really kick started this D. Once everybody is on the same page they can take more chances and be agressive. Want to see more this week vs the Browns. "
Jets Fan Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 9:56am EDT"Randy, Harris and Revis are leading this D great. Do you know the last time 2 Rookies led a team in tackles. Keep it up D. Give us something to want to see more of every week!!!"
Schuyler Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 10:45am EDT"I have loved how the secondary has played, Elam can hit, Rhodes has that rangy ability and has a nose for the ball and Revis is quickly showing why he was drafted so high. It's no wonder with Revis studying tape with Rhodes that this team has improved. That unit is really gelling right now and they're giving opportunities to the front seven. Go Jets, let's pay back the Browns for that bogus call. "
cactus hugger Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 10:55am EDT"Jets Fan, the reason Vilma was ineffective in the 3-4 is that D Rob is undersized for a NT, freeing up a guard or center to help out with Vilma A huge, effective NT would have helped Vilma's production. What some seem to forget is that there are 2 interior LBs in the 3-4, we can have Harris & Vilma in the same lineup, complementing each other the way Jones & Washington did on Sunday. "
Brandon Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 11:57am EDT"Reading an article today and came across this..."by the way, both Jets quarterbacks have played seven games. Chad Pennington: 128-190, 1317 yards, 9 TD's, 7 INT's. Clemens: 93-183, 1128 yards, 4 TD's, 7 INT's. Somehow, this season was still Pennington's fault, I guess." Anyone still want to blame Pennington?..... Didn't think so"
Jake Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 1:01pm EDT"I hate to bring it up but has anyone noticed that if the draft were held today that New England would be in the two spot!! Thats right they have the S.F. 1st rounder!! Boy the commish really came down hard on them don't you think?? I have said all along it was a big cover-up of what was really going on and what was the penalty basicaly the 32nd pick in the draft. Beautiful!! you have to love it!"
Jared Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 1:09pm EDT"Yeah I'll still blame Pennington for some of those losses! How many of those INT's were at critical points of the game and were returned for TD's? How many wins did CP have this year and how many wins does KC have? Under which QB has the team showed more life? Plus its only KC's 5th start! KC continues to show improvement, this is just the tip of the ice berg. He is our qb now, get used to it!"
Ira Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 1:46pm EDT"Randy, How fitting would it be if Baker catches 2 Td's this week and 1 of them is the game winner. Don't want to look past this week but everybody has to hope the Pats win this week so we get the chance of giving them their 1st loss. Randy, Please don't make me run any laps for looking ahead.GO JETS!"
Brandon Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 5:05pm EDT"That must be one small iceberg Jared. "
Drew Said:
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 7:25pm EDT"Jon Vilma cannot play Outside LB.... Name the OLB that is 6'1 and 225 lbs....and struggles rushing the passer?? He is a 4-3 MLB and that's what he will be when he gets traded!! Sorry guys, I love Vilma but he does not fit our system...period!!"
Wayne Said:
Sat, December 8, 2007 - 1:40am EDT"Brandon, I love CP myself but he's never had a strong arm and his 2 surgerys have definitely affected his arm strength. he's smart, accuracy and class act BUT we know what we get with Chad and since we're out of the playoffs, time to see what KC can do. He's smart, has strong arm, more mobile & good character. We need to revamp O & D lines, trade some of these guys for quality or for draft picks."
Gus Said:
Sat, December 8, 2007 - 5:39am EDT"JMac has 5 catches over 50 yrds , that shocked me , not because he caught something but how few there were , and then look whos thrown them? IMHO JMacs problems are that quite often in the last 4 years , when the ball has come his way , hes often had to turn back for the ball and not catch in stride. Now KC is starting , the first chinks of light are starting to emerge in JMacs game. Jets Win!"
gus Said:
Sat, December 8, 2007 - 6:59am EDT"Ira, I've been thinking that since the schedule was released. Poetic justice indeed. This is realistically our ownly chance of back-to-back wins. Having said that , its a shame the season has to end as we are finishing alot stronger , which bodes well for next season. Overachieved last season ,under this year(?) so we are probably where we should be right now. We all need to get behind the team"
rob Said:
Sat, December 8, 2007 - 9:21am EDT"Let's have a dose of reality here. 3 wins, 2 of which were against fins. where was vaunted defense in the dallas game? How many of the Harris's 89 tackles have been 7 yards down the field? Does anyone remember the skins rushing for 296 yds? This is a pathetic franchise with a serious dearth of talent (both O and D). This team is unlikely to win more than 5 games/yr for the forseeable future."
Charles Said:
Sat, December 8, 2007 - 8:09pm EDT"D.Harris has been awesome since Michigan when I saw that he was coming to gang green I knew he would make an impact. Even thou D.Revis was our 1st pick I considered D.Harris to have the most impact. I was wrong Revis is doing great too. D.Harris has been playing great since he started. Revis is looking good to. With K.Rhodes in the back are D is starting to look promising now we need a good NT."
