10/28 — Steve Tasker, the former Bills WR and ST demon, is the CBS analyst, and he reminds as the Bills take over after a Ben Graham punt into the wind that the Jets have been outscored in fourth quarters this year, "75 points to 35." "Seventh-three," play-by-play man Gus Johnson corrects.
Either way, it's not a good omen. Nor is J.P. Losman's 19-yard gun to an open Lee Evans at the Jets 27 and the Bills proceed to third-and-1 at the 18.
Then the Green & White defense, which has been playing well all day, comes up big again. Marshawn Lynch is smothered by a combination of S Abram Elam, DT Dewayne Robertson and LB David Harris, with Harris getting the TFL for a 4-yard loss.
That's the good news. The bad news is that Rian Lindell, with the wind, hits from 40 yards. The visitors have the lead and the way the Jets offense has been playing, they may not give it back.
Bills 6, Jets 3
Note: Laveranues Coles still has no catches today. But Pennington hits Jerricho Cotchery for 8, then after a Thomas Jones fumble, Brad Smith for 11 and a first down at the Jets 39.
Finally, Coles gets his first catch — and he pays for it when he's blasted on the high throw by Terrence McGee in the middle of his back by the Bills bench. Coles remains down through most of the commercial break on the Meadowlands turf before being helped up and walking off across the field slowly.
"I'd be surprised if he came back in after that," said Tasker. But we all know how tough LC is. Meanwhile, it's first-and-10 at the Bills 48 with 7:41 to go.
Two runs and a Pennington incompletion while being held by the ankle brings on the boos as well as Ben Graham. It appears it could be a fake punt on fourth-and-3 at the Bills 41 with Brad Smith at upback and Justin McCareins lined up as the "gunner." But it's a Graham drop punt that Roscoe Parrish lets bounce and McCareins downs at the 3.
Nice play. Now the Jets defense has to hold again with 5:57 to go.
They don't. Losman drops back and lets it fly for Lee Evans. The two hit on a 77-yard bomb last year and this time they connect on an 85-yarder for the crushing TD. Darrelle Revis had the coverage and appeared to have the interception, except that S Abram Elam closed in and tried to apply one of his hard hits to the situation. Elam may have bumped Revis off the ball and allowed Evans to make the miracle catch-and-run
Bills 13, Jets 3
Kellen Clemens is inserted in the game for the ineffective Pennington. Clemens hits Justin McCareins for his first reception in a month and then TE Chris Baker, but there will be no miracle comeback with the people's choice at QB. Clemens' strong throw down the right sideline for Smith is too strong and Terrence McGee, who blasted Coles from the game, makes the leaping INT. The Jets have all three timeouts but with 2:27 left, their descent to 1-7 for the first half of the season is inevitable.
The Jets call their third timeout and
Clemens remains in with 55 seconds to go. He moves the Jets but can't get them any closer than the Bills 37 before throwing a Hail Mary interception on the game's final play.
It's official. This is one of the five worst first halfs in Jets/Titans franchise history. The 1970, '74 and '89 teams all started 1-7. The 1996 team opened 0-8. I'll be back with the recap from the locker room in a short while.

Sun, October 28, 2007 - 6:42pm EST"Time to take Chad out and start a new era. The team needs to look to the future. Taking Chad out and putting Clemens in is one of many moves that this team can make. Too bad they couldn't just change their coaches too. Why not take a chance on 4th down in the 4th quarter. What does the team got to lose."

Sun, October 28, 2007 - 7:11pm EST"I said it earlier this week, put Clemens in so we know what to work on during the bye. The deffense did good. Harris and Revis were great. I can tell Mangini had something to do with the way the D played. Jones played well but the coaching is a problem. If TJ was avg. 5.1 yards throught the game why didnt they give him the ball on 3rd and 3rd. I just dont understand some of the play calls. "
Mike Davis Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 7:21pm EST"Not fair to bring in Clemens with no time left and the game over. Let him start next week versus the Redskins and for the rest of the season."

Sun, October 28, 2007 - 7:26pm EST"Everyone thinks the solution is to just put Kellen in and all of a sudden we are a playoff caliber team. The Jets have a lot of needs on both offense and defense, not sure about the coaching or commitment from the owners either. The last time I felt we were finally going to turn the franchise around is when they hired Bill Parcells. "

That is why I say as a JETS fan for 35 YEARS...like A LOT of JETS fans say...the JETS organization is CURSED! I REALLY mean that! If BILL BELICHICK or Jesus Christ were coaching or running the JETS, we would still find a way to lose!!!!"
Drew Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 7:44pm EST"As expected...... D Harris played like a beast...17 tackles a sack and some big hits. Made more plays today than Vilma made all year. I love J Vilma but Harris is a better player than he is for our D. Check might earlier posts this was expected by this Jet fan....Also huge game by Barton. WOW the offense scored 3 points. "
JP Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 7:49pm EST" Right now, Chad has no fire...whether it is the injuries that he has sustained have finally taken a toll or maybe it is the play calling and this coaching staff. Either way, if he goes to another team, probably the Chiefs to be with Herman Edwards, he will probably produce with a O designed for him. When I saw him and Vilma on the sides talking, I saw (2) Herman guys that were disgruntled."
Keith Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 7:55pm EST"Eric better not put chad in ever again. Jets need to make some big moves on d for next yr. They need to sign haynesworth and asante samuel, trade for Jason taylor with picks and try to unload Robertson and Pennington for lance briggs maybe. the offense is stacked with Clemens' stron arm. Coles and Cotchery are about as good as WR as any and Clemens' arm will open the running game for Thomas Jones."

Instead we end up with Justin Miller, Doug Jolley, and Mike Nugent. Thanks alot Terry Bradway! "

Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:09pm EST" the defense played well, a collision between defenders resulted in the TD. Play calling, terrible once again, I felt bringing in Kellen that late in the game made no sense at all, Mangini should have done it, the latest, the start of the fourth. TJ should have gotten a lot more touches, I hope Mangini sticks with Clemens here on out, Im looking forward to next sunday with Kellen at QB ! "
Joe Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:20pm EST"The Chad era is done and it was a good one by Jets standards. Chad will go down as one of the top 3 QB's of this pathetic franchise. He's a winner and I genuinely salute him. But ... let the Kelle era begin."

JP Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:31pm EST"The D was great - Harris was a monster and Revis is proving that he was worthy of being taken by the Jets after they traded up for him. On O - TJ once again showed why he was brought here....why does he not get the ball in the 2nd half??? After this lose, it is going to be the coaching staff and not Chad that gets bombarded with questions and demands. "

Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:42pm EST"thank god there are only 8 games left to watch this team go down in flames. what is it going to take? for once the defense played well, didn't allow a rushing score or a 100yd game for a RB, and Chad once again can't throw the ball more than 15 yds. I feel bad for the younger fans because this is your first taste of the "same old jets." it makes you wish we had Glen Foley again. Gimme a break."
Viveca Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:43pm EST"Clemens didn't convince me that he is the answer, but we have no other choice than to play him. Chad should be gone after this season. Hopefully He'll bring some other guys, like Clarke and Clement with him. Harris and Revis were great. We need more guys like that. We could have had Cutler, another miss! What a difference a year made! Can't believe this is happening!"
Dan Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:54pm EST"The D stunk. Okay they didnt stink completely, they made some plays, Harris, Rhodes & the secondary played well...but overall it wasnt spectacular. We still can't control the line of scrimmage on either side of the ball with anything close to "consistency " (Mangini's favorite word). Play calling is a joke. Its the same crap every week. Its just frustrating. Better days gotta come!"
Drew Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:54pm EST"I look at today as a positive. Revis and Harris played really well. These 2 will make Tangini look great next year. Kellen got into the game and will probably start next week..... We do need to calm this Elam kid down. He plays a little out of control, nut at least he hits. We are looking at 3-4 wins and a top 10 draft pick. Plus we got the Redskins 2nd&4th rounders. Lets hope for 08."
Jennifer Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:56pm EST"Is Laveranues Coles Ok? I believe in ya'll! You will win the next game! Keep on keepin' on....ya'll have a great team! Great leadership! The character of the men of your team is highly respectable! Y'all are a great example to many! "

Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:58pm EST"I wonder how much spy gate really hurt this team, last year Mangini had their respect and they played extra hard for him. Without the extra effort and focus this is a 1-7 team, I think they lost that respect after week one .3-13 at best. LOOSE THE HURRY UP, GIVE , the ability to audible killed Chads carrer, and the season. LET HIM FINISH THE SEASON. DONT START KELLENS CAREER LIKE THIS"
Drew Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 8:59pm EST"JP.. I noticed the same thing with Chad/Vilma. Those 2 will work playing for Herm next year. Lets try and get some picks for those 2 (especially Vilma) and make our run in 08. We are already loaded thanks to the Redskins in this coming draft. "

Sun, October 28, 2007 - 9:00pm EST"RUN THE BALL....RUN THE BALL.....RUN THE BALL....... that is all we need to do.....establish the run and use clemens cannon of an arm to open up the secondary...... its not rocket science thomas jones is a beast let him control the game......"
Drew Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 9:04pm EST"It looked like Sutton/Mangini changed the defensive calls today. Loved seeing Revis blitz like in college. I wished B-Schott would have been in the same meeting. Is it the play calling this year or has Chad just checked down way too much. Does not matter anymore. Funny at 1-7 I am actually very excited for next weeks game. "

Sun, October 28, 2007 - 9:25pm EST"Awesome defense, the pass rushers were getting there, Revis was SIC! This is what I've been waiting for from that defense. When they rush 5, they look great! Tough loss, but finally a step in the right direction. "
JP Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 9:59pm EST"Very true, Drew. Whatever people say about Chad, he stil has some potentially great years in him, with the right scheme. Herm would scoop him and Vilma up in a heartbeat. Hopefully we can get someone to fill in Kendall. And Ira, good point...the team has not been the same since the Spygate. Continuing the "consistency" of putting in new personnel next week with Kellen will start the new era."
superbowl3 Said:
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 10:30pm EST"The D did a good job despite being on the field all day. The O didn’t show. Start Kellen at home vs Skins. Besides arm, KC has QUICK release to get ball in small gaps in pro coverage. Needs to work with 1st string to get timing, but combo of quick release & strong arm is how a young Marino used to succeed. Given a fair shot I like his chances. Go with KC for rest of year!"
