File Under: Chad Pennington, Chris Baker, Trent Edwards, Josh Reed

10/28 — Not a great start on offense. Chris Baker has to make a nice play to prevent a short kickoff into the wind from being recovered by Buffalo. Then it appears the Bills outguess Chad Pennington and the Jets as the QB throws incomplete, is sacked for a yard loss, then can only find Thomas Jones for 6 yards.

Ben Graham airs out a punt with the wind for a 62-yard touchback, but the Bills' Mario Haggan is called for his second ST penalty of the game, a hold, setting the visitors back to their 10. Then Jason Peters is called for a false start. First-and-15 at the 5. It looks promising for the Jets, but so have a lot of other developments today that haven't panned out.

The Jets let the Bills out. On third-and-2, Trent Edwards beats a Jets blitz with a slant throw to Josh Reed for 18 yards to the 35.

It's coincidence, surely, but the Jets last year started to turn it on with effective blitzes and better defense in Game 8 at Cleveland last year, and they're doing it again in Game 8 today. The Bills' promising drive past midfield is stuffed when Edwards is overwhelmed by a Jets nickel blitz. Eric Barton and Dewayne Robertson miss the rookie QB, but rookie LB David Harris is there again for a big play, bringing Edwards down before he can escape for a 4-yard sack, the Jets' first of the game and Harris' first as a pro.

Then the game again turns against the Green & White. Thomas Jones carries three times for 18 yards, but then OC Brian Schottenheimer calls for two Pennington passes. One is almost picked off by a leaping Angelo Crowell, the second falls incomplete, and it's time for another Ben Graham punt.

It looks like a great exchange as Roscoe Parrish fields a strong Graham punt with the wind and is taken down on a great tackle by Brad Smith.

But wait. Rashad Washington is flagged for holding Donte Whitner as he almost blocks the punt. The Bills choose to have the Jets rekick 10 yards back. Graham's second punt is weak and Parrish returns to the Jets 44.

That's a 45-yard change in field position. In today's low-offense, wind-tunnel conditions, it could be fatal.

But the Jets dodge the bullet as the defense rises up again and forces its first three-and-out of the game. Brian Moorman's punt is fair-caught by Leon Washington. The Jets have the wind for perhaps the remaining 4:55 of the third quarter, but they're starting at their 16.

Can anyone say 6-3?

The Jets go nowhere as Pennington's out to Jerricho Cotchery flutters short in the wind. Graham comes out and nails another punt with the wind but Parrish returns it to the Bills 41.

While this is going on, Trent Edwards is leaving for the locker room with a wrist problem. And when the teams resume play, J.P. Losman, the veteran QB who got hurt and was replaced by Edwards in Game 3 at New England, is back behind center. The same Losman, who beat the Jets with an efficient game at the Meadowlands last December.

On third down from the Jets 43, Losman drops back and gets off a rocket for Roscoe Parrish on a stop and go vs. Darrelle Revis. At first it looks like Revis turns around and defenses the pass just in time. The replay shows the ball may have gotten through cleanly but Parrish couldn't hold it. Either way, Moorman punts into the Jets end zone. Another bullet dodged.

The quarter ends with yet another agonizing third-and-1 at the Jets 29. Can anyone score a touchdown today? Fifteen minutes to find out.

"send richie cunningham and brian shotenheimer back to Mayberry. This reminds me of the Kotitie year. If Mangini is making the play calls send him too."

"That pretty much sums it up. I guess I know why Vilma quit on the Jets. Shortly thereafter he was contemplating with Chad on who they would get traded to, making fun of their own team. We are "The Losers", Mangini and Schottenheimer can have the Jets, I think they both should be promoted. Actually, given a raise, if you know what I mean. The first time in at least 10 years I turned the game off!!!"
