File Under: Chad Pennington, David Harris, Matt Chatham, Brad Smith, Mike Nugent

10/28 — A prediction that Mike Nugent, with the wind, might put the opening kickoff into the first row doesn't pan out, but Nuge does put the kickoff into the end zone. Terrence McGee takes the kick out and is met at his 24 by No. 58. Remember him? Matt Chatham makes the tackle on his first play of the season after being activated from PUP the day before.

The Bills move down the field against the wind behind rookie QB Trent Edwards, who converts two third downs — a pass to Josh Reed against David Barrett and a keeper. But after getting a first down at the Jets 13, the Green & White defense arrives, better late than never.

David Harris, getting the start for the IR-ed Jonathan Vilma, looms large in dropping RB Dwayne Wright for no gain on first down and Shaun Ellis swallows up Fred Jackson on a third-down shovel pass for a yard loss. And so the Bills settle for Rian Lindell's 30-yard field goal to draw first blood.

Bills 3, Jets 0

And as we go to break, CBS play-by-play man Gus Johnson offers the opinion on Chad Pennington that "This could be his last game as a starter if he doesn't do something quickly."

Brad Smith has to pick up Lindell's windblown bouncing kickoff and is dropped at the Jets 13. But Smith comes back with a nice snag of a slant pass from Chad Pennington for 12 yards and a first down. Pennington then loses his grip on the ball as he's sliding on a keeper, and it appears S Donte Whitner has the loose ball in his hands. But WR Jerricho Cotchery jars it loose and recovers, preventing a disaster deep in Jets territory.

The Jets start to move with Thomas Jones' thunder runs and some lightning darts by Leon Washington, which gets the home team to second-and-7 at the Bills 31 as the quick first quarter comes to an end in 21 minutes of real time.
