File Under: bengals, Nick Mangold, Anthony Schlegel, middle linebacker, The Who
10/18 — Some people have a knack of making the word "interesting" sound, well, interesting. So it is with Nick Mangold, the Jets center who used one of his favorite adjectives to describe the Sunday run-ins he's sure to have with the Bengals' new middle linebacker, a guy named Anthony Schlegel.
"Yeah, I've gone up against him multiple times," Mangold said as a highlight reel of Ohio State summer practices and two Jets training camps flashed before his eyes. "It'll be interesting, because this is the first time, after practicing against him for so many years of actually playing against him. It should be interesting, and I'm sure it should be a good battle."
Schlegel, as Green & White fans know, was a Jets third-round pick in the 2006 draft and was a last cut after the final preseason game at Philadelphia last month. Then Cincinnati signed him and put him to use immediately. After playing in the Bengals' first three games, Schlegel made the first two starts of his NFL career for injured starter Ahmad Brooks and made a career-high eight tackles last week at Kansas City.
"I don't know about role. I just go out there and do what the coaches tell me," Schlegel said today. "I'll do anything to help the Cincinnati Bengals win. I don't worry about whether I'm here, there, whatever."
For more, you can check out Geoff Hobson's story on Schlegel on bengals.com.
Mangold was asked if the waiving of his longtime teammate drove home to him the nature of the business side the NFL.
"You see it all the time, and you heard stories about it going through college a little bit, of how it's more of a business atmosphere," he said. "It was disappointing to see Schlegel leave. He's just a great guy. But it was good for him to get picked up. He's doing well. We still keep in touch. We usually don't talk about X's and O's. But Anthony's a smart guy and a hard worker."
And maybe it took an extra year but he's found a home in Cincinnati.
Music for Thought
Head coach Eric Mangini had a message for his players blaring over the sound system at today's practice. The Jets opened with their running and closed with their two-minute drills to the rock classic "Who Are You" by The Who. You remember the owl-like chorus:
"Well, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
"I really want to know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
"Tell me who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
" 'Cause I really want to know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)"
You get the idea. This is a major identity game ahead. (And the music was catchy — a few players were heard whistling it on their way to postpractice meetings.)

I don't think that he got a fair shot from Mangini!I love Mangini's "Press Conf.'s, they remind me of the movie "Casablanca"!It seems I've seen the same Press conference over and over again! Can't blame him, however,he's loyal to his players and staff and will not look for "scapegoats"!I hope that never changes! "

I am not really interested in how a player is going to meet someone we cut last month. This article doesn't really fire me up to watch the game on Sunday. Just a thought..."

Thu, October 18, 2007 - 9:03pm EDT"Randy, Finally Eric went to rock good choice. Well Schlegel is back in the picture. The Jets should run straight at him and also try to isolate him on Baker over the middle. Remember how he fell down in DC last summer trying to cover a WR. The middle of the field should be open all day. I still give credit to Schlegel. He was a bad fit for the 3-4. Glad to see he has had some success."

I will admit I wished I was reading a story about our D knocking guys on their can also. Speaking of Dyson,,,what had happened to this guy from last year? I thought we were set with Dyson/Revis?? Dyson has really struggled....Randy is he still injured??"
Randy Lange Said:
"Drew, I can only tell you that Andre Dyson has been off the injury report for the last two weeks."

Fri, October 19, 2007 - 7:06am EDT"Drew, After that missed tackle again last week i would have sat Dyson down. Time to let Drew Coleman get some playing time. Guess they will activate him this week because they will need more DB's vs the Bengals pass attack. Read the Bengals are 1-18 in their last 2 games on 3rd down conversion tries. Hope Chad can get it together this week. If not they need to make the change."

Fri, October 19, 2007 - 11:05am EDT"Ira,Ive been saying this since training camp,D.Coleman should play.Dyson hasn't been playing well all year.He was hurt all during camp and the end of last year(wasnt it him who got picked apart for all those short passes in the N.E. playoff game last year).Dyson was a very good player for us but like Chad something is not right with him this year.Drew is a ball hawk, reminds me of Asanti Samuel."

Fri, October 19, 2007 - 11:45am EDT""Who Are You" was from 1978, not 1986. As far as I'm concerned, Magini owes nothing to the NYC beat writers. He's got to coach according to his own convictions, and I for one am glad he's not letting the press (and for that matter, the fans) influence anything. If he keeps losing, he'll be gone soon enough. I don't expect it to happen."
Ira Said:
Fri, October 19, 2007 - 12:16pm EDT"Uncle Joe, Well said. Dyson must still be hurt. He is not playing up to his standards. They got away from D.Coleman too early. He should be playing. He is quick and is around the ball. Maybe they still see him slipping vs the Bears last year when Bradley took it 57 yds for a TD. He needs to get some playing time. He had that FF in New England last year. I say he gets an INT if he gets some time."

I'd ride the bench making 8 million dollars before taking a whole team down w/ me, Chad's arrogance is ridiculous. I completely feel he has it in him, BUT I haven't seen Chad since 02. Mr. Lange, constructive critisizm was my intent. I enjoy this forum."
