File Under: Jerricho Cotchery, Herm Edwards
05/18 — Herm Edwards offered a Green & White mea culpa to the Kansas City Star earlier this week and it involved Jerricho Cotchery.
"The worst thing I did when I was in New York was draft Jerricho Cotchery," Edwards said. "He never got on the field for me. Only bits and pieces. Now he’s playing and playing very well and doing what he was doing in practice when I was there. We just didn’t play him enough. I’m not letting that happen again.”
I remember Edwards saying something similar late in the 2004 season, after Cotchery, then a rookie, broke his kickoff-return touchdown at St. Louis. Then in August 2005, the coach said this: "Jerricho is a guy, when he gets the ball in his hands, can make plays. I like his attitude. I like the way he plays football."
Here are some trends in Cotchery's first three regular seasons with the Jets (3DC are third downs converted):
| Season | Plays | Thrown To | Caught | Yards | TDs | 1Ds | 3DC |
| 2004 | 84 | 11 | 6 | 60 | 0 | 4 | 3 |
| 2005 | 268 | 31 | 19 | 251 | 0 | 13 | 9 |
| 2006 | 908 | 125 | 82 | 961 | 6 | 53 | 26 |
Well, what can you do? In 2004, the Jets had Santana Moss and Wayne Chrebet and had just traded for Justin McCareins. In '05, Laveranues Coles replaced Moss, and Cotchery could have played more, but the Jets would have needed more than that to stave off the 4-12 season. And last season, under head coach Eric Mangini and coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, No. 89 achieved liftoff.
Jets fans can only hope Coach Herm doesn't find and develop many Cotcherys in Kansas City this season before the Chiefs come to the Meadowlands for the Dec. 30 regular-season finale.

Fri, May 18, 2007 - 3:39pm EDT"Herm does not know how to develop young talent. He likes to keep on riding the big names. (In 2005, after all the hope for the season was lost, Herm kept on running Curtis Martin and did not give a chance to Cedric Houston to see what he has and give some play time.)"

Fri, May 18, 2007 - 3:48pm EDT"Coach Herm was/is a pretty good coach, but very stubborn and too loyal to the vets on the team even if their skills are eroding. He gives very few players a chance to shine like Cotchery & Thomas(LB) and he is too conservative. Im glad we have Mangini who gives EVERY PLAYER a chance to shine!!"

Fri, May 18, 2007 - 5:01pm EDT"Herm's biggest problem was and is that he sticks with old guys too long and therefore never gives a break to new talent. He was too slow with Cotchery and let Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones play way too long. It even took him forever to finally give Pennington a chance over an inneffective Vinny!"

He planned to win the game on just defense and showed lack of confidence in the offense. Sure the JETS offense wasnt amazing... but give the kid a chance. Mangini We're glad to have you"

Fri, May 18, 2007 - 5:40pm EDT"Herm was too conservative and too predictable. When Cotchery was drafted, you could see his great potential but instead of trying to develop it, he wasn't given an opportunity to shine. I was happy to see Herm him go. Mangini is a breath of fresh air in a team that became way too stale. Go Jets!"

Fri, May 18, 2007 - 9:58pm EDT"The biggest problem with Edwards was desire to be a player's coach. He had too much loyalty to veteran players by letting them call the shots. This is why Curtis Martin ran himself into ground. Didn't hold strict weigh room standards and didn't give younger players a chance. "

Fri, May 18, 2007 - 11:01pm EDT"I disagree with Herm; I believe his biggest mistake(s) was letting players sign in to their offseason lifting programs, then leave without doing anything. Letting injured players stay home instead of attendind classroom sessions was pretty bad too."

Sat, May 19, 2007 - 7:08pm EDT"Look at what this staff has done. Unleashed talent on the roster in Cotchery, leveraged Chad's intelligence in the schemes, plugged endless gaps in the 06 draft, stole a proven feature back from the Bears and made bold moves in the 07 draft that the experts love. Tannenbaum-Mangini we love you guys."

Sat, May 19, 2007 - 7:14pm EDT"Randy, Great job on all your stories and especially the stats. Cotchery was unfortunately forced to play behind some very good veteran receivers. He finally got his chance last year and he showed what he can do. He sure has the Pats number. Mangini,Schottenheimer and Mazzone deserve the credit. "

Sat, May 19, 2007 - 11:08pm EDT"The worst thing the Jets organization did was hire Herman Edwards. He's doing the same thing with KC that he did with the Jets. Sun, May 20, 2007 - 5:32pm EDT"I've been an advocate of Cotchery since his rookie season, i watched his college tapes and he looked like a stud. I'm glad Herm admitted to his blindness i was shocked he refused to play him even though he broke Torry Holts records at NC State. McCairens was obviously a huge mistake."
Brendan Said:
Sun, May 20, 2007 - 5:57pm EDT"I would never rank Herman Edwards second to Weeb Eubank. Bill Parcells was a much better coach. The Jets were a half-hour away from a berth in the Super Bowl and then finished at a respectable 8-8 in the absence of Vinny Testaverde under Bill Parcells' watch. I do not miss Herman Edwards at all. "
Dan Said:
Mon, May 21, 2007 - 11:02am EDT"Herm did not do for the Jets what Mangini has done and will do for the Jets. Cotchery came alive last season and will continue to impress this year. Not playing him enough was one of many mistakes Herm made. "
CaneJet Said:
Mon, May 21, 2007 - 1:20pm EDT"I don't think Herm has learned anything. All he's doing is vowing to let some of his younger guys play. Mangini's philosophy is "the best players will play" and whoever earns it will start. Herm just looks like he's anointing different people. "
Jets Fan 4 Life Said:
Mon, May 21, 2007 - 1:45pm EDT"Herm Edward did turn it around and draft the players that is the foundation of the team. He was focused on the defense and not the offense and that what Magini address last year when he plugged the line and selected Clemens as the future QB. This I won't be suprised if we take it all the way!!!!!!!!"
