10/12 — Brian Schottenheimer is not running away from the issues affecting the Jets' ground game. In his biweekly informal news conference, the offensive coordinator talked about the Jets' overland production.
"The issue with the running game is that we've had some positive runs, some good runs, but we've had too many negative runs," Schottenheimer said.
In fact, the Jets runners have been tackled at or behind the line 23 times in the first five games. This figure isn't bad historically — after five games last season, the figure was 32 times tackled for loss/no gain, and in the previous 10 seasons only 2004 (19 times) and '03 (22) were better.
But much was expected for this year's ground attack with the addition of Thomas Jones. TJ is hardly a forgotten back — his 88 carries are ninth-most in the NFL. But with no touchdowns, 11 tackles for loss and a 3.3-yard average, Schottenheimer knows there are questions about where the breakdowns are occurring.
"Maybe it's a bad call by me, for example," he said. "Maybe it's something with the line. Maybe it's something with the back being impatient. We just have to be more consistent with the execution of the play, with the call of the play, and we want to get Thomas and Leon [Washington] carries. We want to get the running game going."
Other snap-Schotts from today's session:
On the arm strength issue with QBs such as Chad Pennington and Drew Brees: "Playing quarterback is about a lot of things, and your ability to throw the ball accurately and things like that, to me, are more important. I can’t think of many balls Chad has underthrown to the point where I go, ‘Wow, what was that?’ He’s done a nice job and he throws a good deep ball and gives the guys a chance to go get it. I don’t necessarily see the issue with it. The most important thing to me is that it’s accurate and it’s catchable. Sometimes, quite honestly, you can throw a ball too hard."
On Brad Smith's contributions: "We love Brad, we love the things he can do. I tend to, when people ask me about Brad, talk about the person more than the player. It’s easy to do because he’s such a good person. For a young player he’s such a true pro with his commitment to his job, his commitment to the team, his selflessness — all of that stuff is amazing. He is a great weapon to have.
"He’s becoming a better receiver, so we don’t have to do as many of the gimmick things with him because he’s making plays for us as a receiver and just in the general course of the game. I thought he made a great touchdown catch last week. Chad threw it up there for him and he went up there and got it. It’s always fun on Tuesdays to think about different things we can do with him. We don’t always get them called, but they’re always there."
On TE Chris Baker: "He's not a blazer, he's not a real fast guy, but he's got great body control. He has the ability to drop his weight and change direction. ... He's a big guy that the quarterbacks can find easy, running over the middle or running things down the red zone, because he's a big guy and he's got a really good catching radius. He tracks the ball well and he'll go up and fight for it. He's done a really good job and he's stepped it up over the years."
I'll have more with Chris Baker tomorrow in my Special Teams Saturday Radar entry on his long-running role as a wedge man on the Jets' kickoff return teams.
Chant Challenge II
The Jets Chant Challenge, which was started for the Miami game three weeks ago, will be held again Sunday in the Meadowlands. During the game, our in-stadium Chant-Cam will scan the crowd for fans to lead the J-E-T-S chant. Yes, I know, a competitive game would help the enthusiasm and energy of everyone in the stadium. The Jets will try to supply that vs. the Eagles. It's one of those chicken/egg things. Will the chant help the Jets play lights-out, or will the Jets playing lights-out help the chant?
Probably a little of both.

If those 2 wobbling ducks pennigton threw in the 4th quarter the last 2 games don't qualify for his WOW factor then he is really in denial. Chad throws good deep balls...huh? It's amazing that Coles nor Cotchery haven't gotten killed yet as they satnd and wait for the ball to show up while the DB get to T off."

I'd love to hear that people are going to be held accountable. How about something like I've done a lousy job with play calling and disguising plays and not making adjustments and not adding any new wrinkles. That would be enlightening...sounds like more of the same this weekend."

If Chad has to continue to throw the ball 30 times were done.We ran the ball last year with a horrible group of RB..we cannot commit to the run with TJ?? B-Schott tried to get cute with his gameplan and got burned. As to the chant..The crowd has been dead and every leaves by the 3rd Q..construction is a mess!!"

I hope we play less scared to lose and more about attacking and having the mindset that the other team has to beat us ... not that we have to play to avoid beating ourselves. Lets give the whole staff a chance this week ... see what happens."

Sat, October 13, 2007 - 5:29am EDT"main problem is we run ot of the exact same formation every time.... TJ lines up 8 yards deep and we hand it off to him . hmmm hello Schotty im a fan and i can see it coming... think the D knows when its a run they do watch film u know.. try running out of different formations might help some. Sat, October 13, 2007 - 6:26am EDT"Randy, They must commit to the run this week. Otherwise the Eagles will cheat on Chad again. Hope they can get out of this funk. Brad has taken over that #3 Wr spot. Now we see how he has grown into that spot. I think they can win this game. Jets 19 - Eagles 17"

He and Mangini got it all figured out, yup they have it all set up. I assume they are working towards the no#1 overall pick in 08 draft. "

MIA is maybe worse than us - but consider this - the HC of the NYJ has done one hell of a lousy job here, and its about time someone said so. How can a team flop so fast - unless last year was a fluke ? We are what we are, and I am afraid its 1-5, thats the reality. Get real Jet fans"

Sat, October 13, 2007 - 8:55am EDT"I called a few weeks ago and volunteered to do the chant, made the jumbotron 5-6 times, but the crowd on it's own needs to get loud on third downs and defense in general, that's the issue, it's not the "chant". Maybe a simple get loud video on the jumbotron would work, or when it comes to the chant designate one person to do it before kickoffs and after touchdowns, fans just need to get loud on D."

Sat, October 13, 2007 - 9:23am EDT"If CBS puts a graphic stating that when a Jets RB is 7-8 yds off the line of scrimmage there is a running play 96% of the time, Do you think the opposing defense doesn'y know that? Look at the Giant game Jones or Washington was back there and you could just abouut see the Giant Defense salivating as the loaded the box. "
Ira Said:
Sat, October 13, 2007 - 9:24am EDT"Randy, The stat for being stopped behind the line of scrimmage doesn't tell the whole story. After 5 games this year they're avg 77 yds rushing per game. Last year after 5 games it was 96 yds. Thats a big difference and thats one of the big reasons Chad is making mistakes that he normally wouldn't make. He needs the play action to be successful to get his passing game going."

Sat, October 13, 2007 - 12:36pm EDT"Chad needs to quit being so mental about the game and be more physical, hes playing flat taking whats given, he needs to take what they need, and not wait for third down before going for it. they do well in a two minute offense, they need to maintain that level of play. whats the purpose of no huddle?, beside trying to draw a penalty, they need more aggressive play calling, and less trick plays."
SCJoe Said:
Sat, October 13, 2007 - 3:11pm EDT"It has been written often recently, about how other teams have adjusted to the Jets offense only in it's second year under Shott. Well, how have they not adjusted to the Indy and N.E. offense that has been going strong for more then five years now? You think the players and play calling have a little to do with it?"
Frank Said:
Sat, October 13, 2007 - 6:49pm EDT"Hey Schott and all the other Chad Kool Aid drinkers here's something to think about. Pennigton has a passer rating of 35.4 in the 4th quarter that is dead last in the NFL. You know who the top 2 are? You guessed it Manning & Brady so you wanna continue to tell us that Chad is not the problem? With parity so close in the NFL that right there is why we are 1-4 and and one KO return from 0-5."
MikeL Said:
Sat, October 13, 2007 - 8:41pm EDT"Hey SCJoe...My thoughts exactly. I’m getting tired of reading in the papers from Jet Players and some coaches that the rest of the league has caught up to the Jets scheme. This is such an excuse for poor play and execution. NE and Indy have been perennial playoff and Super Bowl contenders for years. Maybe the league is only focused on the figuring out the Jets scheme ??? yeah right!!!"
donal Said:
Sun, October 14, 2007 - 12:14am EDT"How about giving the ball to our 3rd RB--Stacy Tutt. He is the reason Danny Ware was cut. I am not saying he is the solution because we will still have 5 or 6 trying to block 8. But let's give him the damn ball and see what happens. "
