File Under: Eric Mangini, 1-4 record, Jacksonvile

10/10 — The Radar has received some nice comments recently from Drew, Dunnie, Uncle Joe and others who feel we've got a good sense of community going here, and we thank you. It's generally not a contented community, though, with the way the first five games have unfolded. And some folks aren't happy that I'm not critical enough and I want to distract you with facts and stats that somehow are perceived to be jokes.

To those critical folks, I can only say: Sorry, but you might want to find a new Web site. I'm going to pass on statistics and charts and information I uncover, mostly positive but some negative, because I think the info is interesting and neat and most of you would at least like to know about it.

And in case anyone missed it, the name of the site is newyorkjets.com. I work for the Jets and I am going to give you the positive spin as stated by the head coach, the general manager and the players because that's what they believe and that's what I believe as well.

For instance, Eric Mangini at his morning news conference today had a poignant perspective on the 1-4 record that is staring his team in the face. The coach has been heard to state a few times that one season has nothing to do with another, but he used a question about that philosophy to hearken back to a year ago this week, at what is remembered by many as when the Jets' 2006 season hit rock bottom at Jacksonville.

"Last year at this point we were 2-3, we'd just been beaten, 41-0, we couldn't run the ball, we couldn't throw the ball, we couldn't stop the run," he recalled. "That was one of those days. It was like a 12-sack day. Nothing went right."

Out of those ashes the Jets fashioned a playoff run, which, of course, was put aside once the loss to the Patriots was over, but the constant from last season to this season, Mangini said, is the players' approach.

"We have a good locker room. There's a lot of character in that locker room. And we've faced adversity," he said. "I like the way these guys work — I've said that a lot of times. This is a good group. Adversity helps reveal character. That's why it's constantly important to bring good character guys into the locker room. You're going to deal with adversity every season, every game."

Needless to say, there are no Namathian guarantees from here. But this season could go any one of, oh, four ways. Let's use four recent 1-4 starts in recent Green & White history as examples:

They could go an ugly, embarrassing, forgettable 3-13 as the 1995 Jets did.

They could struggle to a miserable 6-10 campaign, as the aging 2003 club did.

They could put together an inspirational but still postseason-less 8-8 season as did the '99 Jets.

They could thrust themselves back into the playoff conversation with a 9-7 season as did the '02 Jets.

You all have had ideas and will have more about if and how this can be accomplished. I'll be waiting to hear from you.

In fact, CaneJet just gave me an idea. Radarheads, send me the win-loss record you think the Jets will finish with this season based on the 1-4 start. I'll post each record (and comment, if you want to give one) at the end of this Radar entry. I'll average out the prognostications that I get through Saturday midnight and report to you in my pregame blog before Sunday's Jets-Eagles matchup how optimistic or pessimistic this particular fan base is about the rest of the season.

"I used to enjoy your visits to the NYJetsChat.com site and still miss those. We’ve had a number of others in for chat sessions—and, of course, our daily posters in our forum section."

"But your chat sessions were the best since you weren’t afraid to shoot from the hip and mix it up with some of our cranky forum regulars."
