File Under: Thomas Jones, Victor Hobson, Shaun Ellis, Trent Edwards

09/30 — The game is under way, and the Jets open in a 4-3 against Bills rookie QB Trent Edwards, with Bryan Thomas down as the right end, 4-3 spacing along the front. Edwards hits two passes against the 4-3, the Jets shift back to the 3-4 and Shaun Ellis makes a strong move for a takedown of RB Dwayne Wright for no gain. Then the nickel comes in and Victor Hobson stunts with Ellis and gets a sack of Edwards. The defense's first series is a success.

On offense, the ball goes to Thomas Jones for two carries and a first down, sandwiched around a Chad Pennington hard count that draws Larry Tripplett offside — the sixth presnap penalty induced by Pennington in his three games. Then Jones converts third-and-a-foot with a good second effort.

But a Jerricho Cotchery end-around is smelled out by Aaron Schobel for a 2-yard loss, Leon Washington can't dance his way through the middle, and a slip screen to Brad Smith comes up a yard short. After faking a hurry-up fourth-down try, Pennington takes a delay penalty — no burning a precious timeout with 5½ minutes left in the opening period — and Ben Graham nails a strong drop punt that is fair-caught by Roscoe Parrish at the Bills 11.

Edwards is completing passes, a trademark of the young Stanford passer (he hit better than three out of every four passes he threw in the preseason), but it's others who are struggling. Lee Evans drops a pass and rookie RB Marshawn Lynch loses 3 yards on a draw.

Evans makes a beautiful catch, tipping the high pass to himself for a 22-yard gain in from of David Barrett to the Jets 43. But the next play produces the Jets' second takeaway of the season to go with their second sack of the season on the first drive. Jonathan Vilma punches the ball out of TE Robert Royal's grasp (or was it Darrelle Revis?) and Victor Hobson, who had that sack, also pounced on the fumble. So the Jets take over at their 38 with 1:46 to play.

And the clock runs out with a Chris Baker false start and Jones being stopped for a yard loss.

"I'll tell you chad is where the past , present and future for the jets. Kellen don't no how to run the offense like chad. When chad is under the center they can beat anyone on any given day. Kellen forces to much stuff and in my opinion chad is the best quarterback as far as decision making and he will win the quarterback battle. Kellen needs more mentoring."
