File Under: Chad Pennington, Eric Mangini, Chris Baker, Buffalo Bills, Marshawn Lynch, Trent Edwards
09/26 — Chad Pennington put it great during today's late-morning news conference: "I think the danger ... is in getting enthralled with the stats."
The Jets quarterback meant the three-game stats compiled by the Buffalo Bills, the Jets' Sunday opponent at Ralph Wilson Stadium. These Bills are battered and bruised and the numbers show it.
Take the rankings. This week Buffalo checks in 32nd and last in the NFL in a whopping six key NFL categories: overall and passing yardage and points on offense, overall, rushing and passing yardage on defense.
I've been charting league rankings week by week since the mid-Nineties, and this is a bottoming-out like I've never seen before. Since the NFL became a 32-team league in 2002, only two teams had as many as four last-place rankings among the Elite Eight yardage and point categories in a given week: New Orleans after Week 13 in 2004 and San Francisco after Weeks 5 and 14 in '05.
But, of course, that's the trick this week. The Green & White faithful will offer their comments on the Radar, ESPN, the Fan and assorted fan Web sites about how trouble-free this game should be for the Jets. But if the players and coaches buy into that mindset, they'd be on the highway to L.
The tone in the Jets' locker room today is that Coach Mangini has sold them on the concept that these Bills could be due. On offense, Marshawn Lynch has played well in the first three games of his pro career, Trent Edwards with a full week of first-team reps under his belt for the injured J.P. Losman is a scary wild card, and WR Lee Evans might still be running after last year's 77-yard TD reception at the Meadowlands. DEs Aaron Schobel and Chris Kelsay have given the Jets fits in recent meetings. The Bills' special teams are truly special.
"Across the board, they present problems, and it's a difficult place to play," Mangini said. "We've got a long week ahead of us."
"If you look at this team, their opponents are 8-1 combined," Pennington said. "We're playing a team that plays extremely tough at home, extremely hard. They've just been dealing with some injuries.
"These guys, they've experienced the roller-coaster of emotions. That's tough to deal with as a team. But from their standpoint, they haven't quit, they haven't given up, they haven't asked why. They just continue to play hard. We've got to make sure we're ready."
Here's one more number to help the Jets get ready: By coming in 32nd in offense and defense, the Bills are also last in the NFL in yardage margin. The Jets are 31st.

One more note about Chris Baker's strong supporting role in Sunday's Miami win. If you've slowed down the video of the game, you know that the wedge that sprung Leon Washington on his 98-yard kickoff-return jaunt comprised Baker and former Dolphins Darian Barnes and David Bowens.
Baker blew out Miami's Lamont Thompson as he stormed down the sideline. Meanwhile, Barnes turned his man to the left and Bowens blocked his man to the right — and Leon shot the rapids through those blocks and past kicker Jay Feely to go wire-to-wire virtually untouched.
Add that to Baker's glue-fingered 3-yard TD grab and in-line blocking and there's a lot for Mike Tannenbaum to talk about on Thursday's "First and Goal" show on SportsNet New York. Baker will be the featured topic for the GM and host Steve Overmyer. The show will air at 4:30 p.m. on SNY.

They'd bettter watch Evans and Parrish. Both players burnt the Jets last year and can score from anywhere on the field. I expect Edwards to try play action a lot to try to catch the Jets with a big play. Of course the screen plays will be in there too."

Wed, September 26, 2007 - 9:23pm ET"The Bills have lost a lot of key players on defense, (tokeo spikes, london fletcher) and they have huge issues at quarter back but they have some really good receivers that can make plays, not to mention the punt return team. Pennington will throw for at least 200 yards. I think the jets defense will step up to the plate and will get turnovers and bring down the quarterback"

Get the ship right this week with more improvement and we start fresh at .500 !"

Wed, September 26, 2007 - 9:38pm ET"Randy, I agree with you in the respect that the Jets can NOT take this game lightly. Talent matchups dictate that the Jets have the ability to win this game. This assumes that the Jets establish the run early, exploiting the weak linebacking corps of the Bills. This will hopefully soften up passing lanes for C.P. If the Jets can find a pass defense, it could the start of good run for JETS!"

Thu, September 27, 2007 - 8:48am ET"The Bills always seem to have the Jets number in games like this. Brick finally played well last week let's see if he can keep the momentum. Schoebel schooled him badly last year and if he does it again it will be a long day for the Jet offense. The Bills will put 8 in the box and dare Pennington to beat them deep which he can't and won't. As bad as it seems for da Bills we are in for a dog fight."
Frank Said:
Thu, September 27, 2007 - 8:55am ET"There is no question the Jets have been flat and without emotion the first three games especially on defense which is very telling of the players attitude playing this defense. Are they taking on their coaches blase personality? Even Belichick shows emotion from time to time. The Jets need a sparkplug and I hope someone steps up soon. They better be ready for the Bills. "
Brandon Said:
Thu, September 27, 2007 - 8:59am ET"I agree with everyone that this should be a tougher game then anticipated. The Bills have some weapons. Remember Trent Edwards is an NFL QB. Just stacking 8 guys in the box isn't good enough. We need to get pressure. We could put 11 guys in the box, if we don't get to the QB we are in trouble. I don't care if Andre Ware is playing QB. If we don't get pressure they any QB can make the throws. "

Thu, September 27, 2007 - 9:24am ET"I think we see our most complete game this week with the D leading the way with forced turnovers,T Jones should get the ball early and often ,and with Buf s D being so banged up and young,TJ should reach 150 + yrds on the ground.I agree with dont take this one lightly, but talent should win out in a big way in Green favor this week ,Buffalo is just to short handed to compete unless jets T.O the ball"
Ira Said:
Thu, September 27, 2007 - 9:56am ET"Expect the Jets to continue to feed Jones and get him going. Leon will get his chances also. Last year in Buffalo we saw what Leon is able to do. He had 7 carries for 25 yds and 2 catches for 52. One was a screen that went for 47 yds to set up a score. That pick they got for Herm sure looks good now. GO JETS!"
Frank R Said:
Thu, September 27, 2007 - 12:54pm ET"I agree, i think the jets need to take the coming match up with Buffalo seriously. I've seen the worst teams take on the best and win. And sadly the jets aren't nearly the best team yet. But I believe if the jets play hard and execute correctly nothing should keep them from being 2-2 come sunday night! J! E! T! S! JETS! JETS! JETS! "

Thu, September 27, 2007 - 4:02pm ET"I believe the Jets need to beware of falling into this is a sure win. play as hard as they can and beat the bills up. that simple. when you corner a mouse it will attack so this is exactly what we need to do. we need this win more than the bills do."

Thu, September 27, 2007 - 10:22pm ET"There is no way this game is an easy win--Rich stadium- (if its still called that) has been the scene of terrible horrors for the jets. Like that playoff game way back when (1980's I think), when the jets fumbled the opening kickoff and buff. got a td--I think it was 35-0 at halftime. Anyway, if I was forced to bet, I'd bet on the Bills--though of course, I hope for the best."

An 0-4 start for the Bills would not sit well with their players. This team has always given us fits especially up there. I expect the Jets to play a solid game and win. But your're right they better be careful. The Eagles had problems scoring and they put up 56 last game."
