09/19 — Eric Mangini opened today's news conference with some newsy items that have come up the last few days.
The Jets head coach confirmed reports that he called Baltimore coach Brian Billick following Billick's charge late Monday that the Jets were illegal simulating offensive signals that caused the Ravens to false-start a few times in Sunday's game.
"I talked with Brian yesterday. We had a good conversation," Mangini said. "It was important to me that we talked. I wanted him to know we don't coach things that cause penalties, we don't believe in getting penalties and that's something we work to minimize at all times. ... I felt very good about the conversation."
Mangini also commented for the first time on the word Tuesday afternoon that the team had placed Justin Miller on IR, and it was clear that the coach really felt badly for the player that he saw make great strides this summer in improving his corner play and continuing to excel as a Pro Bowl kickoff returner.
"I'm extremely disappointed for Justin," Mangini said. "I thought he had a really good off-season. [Defensive line assistant coach] Bryan Cox and he actually spent a lot of time together. I saw that quite a bit, I saw Justin practice, I saw him in meetings — he took some of the most impressive notes of any of the players. All those things add up. It's tough, it's tough."
The coach also announced that the Jets filled Miller's active-roster spot by signing free agent OL Will Montgomery, a Virginia Tech product and a strongman who did 35 reps in the 225-pound bench press at the 2006 combine workouts. Montgomery was Carolina's seventh-round pick in that draft and played in six games, starting four. He was a final cut of the Panthers earlier this month.
"I really liked his motor," Mangini said of watching video of Montgomery, who was at practice today wearing No. 66. "I thought he showed good finish on second level. He's got good toughness and he's a good kid. He's played both guard and center and has some flexibility to go out to tackle."
Cotchery's Big Day Revisited
Two notes on Jerricho Cotchery's career 165-yard receiving game vs. the Ravens. Unofficially, Cotchery racked up 88 yards after catch on his seven receptions. That's the most in a game by a Jets wideout since Keyshawn Johnson notched 100 YAC in the 1999 season opener vs. New England. The only other player to top J-Co's YAC total since then was Leon Washington with 115 yards last Christmas night at Miami.
And Cotchery was only the third Jet in at least the last 12 seasons to record two catches of 40-plus yards in the same game. Here's the short list:
| Season | Receiver | Quarterback | Opp. | Yardage |
| 1999 | Keyshawn Johnson | Tom Tupa | vs. N.E. | 50, 65 |
| 2003 | Santana Moss | Chad Pennington | at Oak. | 65, 43 |
| 2007 | Jerricho Cotchery | Kellen Clemens | at Bal. | 44, 50 |

I had some really high hopes as usual going into the season but are defense looks very bad, Chad's arm looks weak from watching on tv down here in South Florida, Jones does'nt look that good or is that are offensive line? Please comment on what's going on"

There's a reason the club paid the player the highest professional compliment when they came to him effectively saying 'we don't like your contract, we want to give you more money.' "

Wed, September 19, 2007 - 12:48pm ET"I don't know why Eric called Billick if it is a penalty let the refs call it. That is no different than someone calling holding. Billick's teams have always been penalty proned because of there agressive style. I guess it is easier to blame someone else for a team that lacks discipline."

Wed, September 19, 2007 - 12:58pm ET"Randy, Any partcular reason why Leon and Brad Smith seem to be out of the game plans so far. Is Bender improving at all?"
Rick Said:
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 1:22pm ET"Hey Randy, is it me, or is Coach's presser from 9/19 on the website, the same as the 9/17 one?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Rick, thanks for the heads-up. We're fixing that now."

Wed, September 19, 2007 - 1:53pm ET"I'm not suprised Manjudas responded to Billicks's comment. Rest assured Manjudas is gonna hear it the rest of the year from the other old school coaches who don't appreciate a snitch. What Bill Bellichick may have been doing was wrong however it is the league's responsibility to discover problems. (DECLINED: NAMECALLING)"
bob Said:
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 1:53pm ET"Jake: he called billick to "cover his ass".....He is nothing more than a "mini-belichick-after all- hew spent many hours "reviewing" video tapes while he was the defensive coach of the pat's........why do you think he got the jets head coaching job...(luck or talent??- PLEASE !!!) (DECLINED: OBSCENITY (COVER HIS ASS))"
Drew Said:
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 1:55pm ET"Big Ron calm down already. The Jets will string together some wins the next 3 weeks and everything will be fine. A true Jet fan would have been thrilled to be 1-1 after the first 2 games but expected 0-2. If they are 2-4 after 6 then come back to us. keep your hopes high down in Fla."
Drew Said:
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 1:56pm ET"By the way the Pats signed Ventrone today.....These teams just flat out hate each other!! I love it"
Ira Said:
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 2:00pm ET"Randy, Billick talks too much. Eric was the pro by calling him. I remember when Billick made front page headlines before the 2000 game and said they would shut out the Jets. Cotchery's catches compared to those you listed were better because of the way Cotchery fought for his yards."
Ira Said:
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 2:30pm ET"Noel Mazzone deserves some of the credit for Cotchery taking his game to the next level. Randy as you know Mazzone was Cotchery's OC at NC State in 03 and 04. "
Coops Said:
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 3:06pm ET"Interesting signing in Will Montgomery. The Panthers were pretty deep at C/G with the drafting of Ryan Kalil in the 2nd round to be the primary interior reserve. Montgomery is supposed to be smart, with good technique. Hopefully he can add some quality competition for that LG spot."
Drew Said:
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 9:23pm ET"Ira, are you ignoring my question?? What's the deal with the Miami spy at the Jet practice?? If not you have you seen this type of thing at practice over the years??"
Ira Said:
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 7:25am ET"Drew, I would think this happens all over the league and at the college level also. Would like to see the Jets sign Manny Collins to the PS. Wonder if Ray Mickens is in shape? He could be good insurance if another CB gets hurt."
Anthony Said:
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 10:19am ET"I want to make a statement to all Jets attending this Sunday's game against the Dolphins. There should be no doubt in anyone's mind that Chad give us the best chance to win regardless of how Kellen played in the 4th quarter last week. Kellen will the man some day but right now Chad is THE MAN. Make sure we let him know when he comes out of the tunnel Sunday. IN CHAD WE TRUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Jets1087 Said:
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 4:23pm ET"No doubt Chad is the man, Kellen was really bad last week vs the Ravens, playing 15 minutes doesnt make your outing great! Kellen will grow and mature sitting on the bench and watching Chad lead us to the wildcard!!! Chad OWNS Miami, 6-1 and 4-0 at Giants Stadium!! C&C will have a field day with thos brutal CB's!!"
Ray Said:
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 11:10am ET"Im glad people or starting to love chad, becuase he is our QB and for all you haters out there.. get used to it because chad is our guy!!!"
Kaly Said:
Fri, September 21, 2007 - 12:38pm ET"Chad is a good QB with strong character and is a born leader, but he doesn't provide a vertical threat. Without that all teams crowd the box and prevent an running game to open up (until they already built a comfortable lead). The Jets will NEVER win a Superbowl with Chad and I won't settle for him sneaking us into the playoffs again. Wake up people. "
