File Under: Chad Pennington, Eric Mangini, Chansi Stuckey, Abram Elam, Patriots investigation

09/12 — I'll break again with my plan to blog once each day during the week, since head coach Eric Mangini opened up this morning's news conference by addressing the two issues on the minds of Green & White fans everywhere.

On Chad Pennington's status with his ankle injury heading toward Game 2 vs. the Ravens: "There's a lot of interest in the injury situation. Chad, his situation still hasn't changed. We'll look at it each day and evaluate it as the week goes on."

And on the developing story about sources saying the NFL is prepared to punish the New England Patriots for having a team employee videotaping Jets coaches giving defensive signals: "I know another point of interest is the investigation. Nothing's changed there, either. It's a league matter, the league's handling it, we're moving on to Baltimore."

Mangini didn't deviate from either message, although he did mention in response to a question that he'll abide by the NFL's ruling on the investigation front, whatever it is.

"The league's done a great job when player issues come up. There are multiple things they handle, and it's important they handle it," he said. "I think the commissioner has done an excellent job with it. I trust the league. That's really the best situation, to have a strong commissioner and a strong league that can handle these matters."

Right after Mangini finished his news conference, Patriots coach Bill Belichick began his "presser" in Foxboro, Mass., at 11 a.m. He also declined to comment on the NFL's investigation, although he did refer to a statement he issued earlier in the morning. Here is that statement:

"Earlier this week, I spoke with Commissioner Goodell about a videotaping procedure during last Sunday's game and my interpretation of the rules. At this point, we have not been notified of the league's ruling. Although it remains a league matter, I want to apologize to everyone who has been affected, most of all ownership, staff and players. Following the league’s decision, I will have further comment.”

On some "housekeeping matters," Mangini announced the Jets have signed safety Abram Elam, an undrafted free agent in 2005 by the Dolphins who played with Dallas last season and was a final cut by the Cowboys this season. The Jets have also released S Ray Ventrone from their practice squad and have placed seventh-round rookie WR Chansi Stuckey on injured reserve.

More after the locker room and media availability at today's practice.

"Does anyone remember Zach Thomas last year saying they watched tape on the play calls from OC to Brady. They were able to get the plays and the timing. This is football, every player, owner and coach is trying to gain a competitive edge. The dolphins were smarter, but were they called out! No"

"I think the PATS should be suspended for the entire season, the coach bounced from the league and the players fined. They all knew exactly what they were doing and enjoyed the process. The players also were aware as they were being told the opposing teams plays..fine them all!"
