09/03 — Eric Mangini, in a rare white "NY" logo golf shirt, announced at his news conference today how the Jets have filled seven of their eight practice squad berths. The seven players signed to the P-squad, all with the Green & White during training camp:
CB Manny Collins
WR Chris Davis
QB Brett Ratliff
LB Jason Trusnik
OL Robert Turner
S Ray Ventrone
RB Danny Ware
"All of them will be out there today" at practice, Mangini said. "We still have one spot available if we sign anybody else."
Ware, the free agent from Georgia, was the player many Jets fans were most concerned about. He had 183 rushing yards, fourth-most in the NFL this preseason and the most by a Jets back since LaMont Jordan gained 194 summer yards as a rookie in 2001, and 207 yards from scrimmage, also the most since Jordan, who had 238 in '01.
Mangini also announced the Jets' captains for the season, elected by a vote of the players Sunday:
Offense: QB Chad Pennington and "first-time captain" WR Laveranues Coles
Defense: LB Jonathan Vilma and DE Shaun Ellis
Special Teams: K Mike Nugent and LB Brad Kassell
"I'm very happy for them," Mangini said. "I'm always happy to see those guys take over that position. I think it's a really good group and I'm excited about that."
But then again, it's easy to get excited today. Opening Day is less than a week away.
I'll be back with a report from the Jets locker room and the first half-hour of practice early this afternoon.

Mon, September 3, 2007 - 11:59am EDT"Randy, the p. squad members were a little interesting, in particular C. Davis, trusnik and really about ratliff, is there something going on in the QB position that we should know? I thought maybe Tui might be trade material is that still possible? I love the captains picks. Go Jets!!!!!!!!!!!"

Mon, September 3, 2007 - 12:15pm EDT"Randy,I really figured they would sign Bobby Hamilton to the P.squad.Did someone pick up f.Jackson I was just wondering becuse from the sounds of things he would have been way ahead of C. Davis. I think we played the odds by releasing ware and keeping Tui glad it worked out Ware looks fantastic!!!!"

Mon, September 3, 2007 - 12:18pm EDT"Thanks for keeping us all up-to-date. Looking forward to the post-practice afternoon report. Currently my areas of concern are mirror-image for the O and D lines. That is, can the OL pass-protect and run block effectively? And, can the DL stop the run and apply pressure? "

Mon, September 3, 2007 - 1:01pm EDT"So now everyone can chill out bc we got D.Ware on the P-Squad and Ventrone--- hmm... guess Mangini did know what he was doing. I like the theory on the last post where someone mentioned that maybe we didnt release Tui bc Eric was scared the Pats would pick him up after releasing Vinny."

Mon, September 3, 2007 - 2:34pm EDT"Randy, Not surprised at all with the names on the PS. I thought they would keep Ratliff. He does have a good arm. Nice to see that LC was elected as one of the captains. LC is one of the toughest plaers in the game. Good role model for any player. "
Coops Said:
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 2:38pm EDT"Jake - Hamilton and Jackson are not PS eligible, it's only for guys who aren't roster veterans. Really a nice looking PS list, lots of guys with potential to contribute in time - Ware, Collins, Trusnik, Turner are all guys who could be good with polish. Ratliff is interesting, raw but talented."
Abe S Said:
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 2:51pm EDT"why did they decide to keep a QB on the practice squad when there are all ready three on the regular roster and brad smith can play QB as well?"
Ira Said:
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 3:12pm EDT" In 06 the Pats used only 5 blockers more often than any other AFC team. 57.6 % of the time. The Jets rushed just 3 defenders more often than any other team in 06. 25.4% of the time. Can i say they need to blitz often this week?"
Joe Said:
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 3:16pm EDT"Don't be so sure D. Ware is going to stick on the practice squad. At any point during the season, any team can sign another team's practice-squad player on the condition that the new team puts him on the active roster for at least 3 games. The first team that loses a back to injury, Ware is gone."
Joe Said:
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 3:18pm EDT"I feel really good for Laveranues. After slipping to the 3rd round in the draft due to off the field issues, he has carved out a heck of an NFL career for himself. Now he's been named a team captain. Congratulations LC!"
Ira Said:
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 3:38pm EDT"Ratliff is another arm to have. The experiment with Smith as a full time QB is over. Have a few plays for him at QB but let him focus on being a WR. Otherwise they are only holding him back."

You know Baby Bill has already drawn up some plays to attack the Jets left side...Nice to see D.Ware back. This guy had the fans talking crazy. He is a nice "undrafted" 3 or4 RB"
Drew Said:
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 7:27pm EDT"Congrats to the captains especially L Coles. This guy has been a beast for us and to think he was upstaged by Peter Warrick @FSU?? I think LC's teamates named him a captain to see him and Coach go at it for the year. LC commenting on the Coach is just flat out funny. Those meetings should be great!!"
Jake Said:
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 8:12pm EDT"Thanks coops it makes more sense now. I still hate to see Hamilton go he seems like a first class gentleman and seemed to make valuable contributions. I am certainly glad that ware is back he looks fantastic. I like LC as a captain I think he an Mangini have mutual respect for each other. Go Jets"
