Another 'Good Day' for Clemens

File Under: Chad Pennington, Darrelle Revis, Kellen Clemens, Danny Ware, C.J. Mosley

08/26 — Kellen Clemens summed up what he's been about lately with one quote about the interception he threw on his last play of Saturday night's game against the Giants.

"What a bad way to end a good day. It really is," said the Jets QB.

Spoken like a true pro. The pick was "a bad way" only in the sense that it was a turnover. Others have described safety J.R. Reed's diving steal of a pass ticketed for Frisman Jackson's outstretched hands and a touchdown as "an incredible play."

But Clemens' night was indeed a good day. Another good day.

His first drive produced the Jets' first touchdown since the opening-play Chad Pennington-to-Leon Washington 79-yard score, but as Clemens described it, "That one drive was all Danny Ware and the offensive line."

The next drive was a whole lot of K.C. First a pass left that Justin McCareins gathered in over his shoulder for 45 yards, then a pass right that Brad Smith reeled in for 34 more, then a hurry up to the line so that Clemens could get the quick snap and 1-yard sneak for the TD that put the Jets up, 20-12.

"We tried to catch them off guard," he said of the Giants' defense, "and fortunately it worked."

Most professional of all, Clemens deflected questions about whether he's shown enough to force coach Eric Mangini to give him some consideration to start some time soon.

"Right now, going out to each practice and each preseason game, my goal is to get better and to improve," he said, "try to help the team anytime I can."

Some early training camp fretting that the Jets don't have an NFL-quality backup has been dispelled. Here are Clemens' drive-engineering numbers in this summer's three preseason games:

Opponent Drives TDs FGs Punts TOs
  vs. Atlanta 6 4 1 0 0
  vs. Minnesota 4 1 0 1 2
  at N.Y. Giants 3 2 0 0 1
  Clemens Totals 13 7 1 1 3
Clemens seemed surprised when a reporter characterized his progress from his rookie season to now as a quantum leap.

"Quantum leap?" he said. "It really all comes down to experience at this point. More reps, more time. I had a good off-season. I was able to spend extra time in the books, get more tutelage from the coaches and from Chad."

Mosley Makes a Play

C.J. Mosley expressed a little surprise at the welcome the Jets got from the Meadowlands crowd when they ran out onto the field before the start of the game.

"It was kind of weird," the nose tackle said. "It was our home stadium and we came out and we were getting booed."

That's what happens, of course, when you share a stadium with your opponent and it's the opponent's home game. The last time the Jets got booed before a game in the Meadowlands was for the '05 preseason Giants game. Mosley and a whole lot of rookies and second-year players weren't Jets then. And the Green & White have to be ready for the same kind of reception in Game 5, when they again play the host Giants at the same venue.

"But since we've been through it," he said, "we'll know what to expect."

Mosley had let the rude greeting roll off his back by the time he made his biggest play of summer, barging up the middle and swallowing Giants QB Tim Hasselbeck for a third-down sack. Instead of a 31-yard field goal, first-year kicker Josh Huston was wide right from 42 yards with 3:20 to play.

Mosley shrugged off the semi-importance of that play.

"It feels good," he said, "but you can't just have one play and be inconsistent. You've got to feel good about the whole game."

All the Jets who survive Tuesday's roster cutdown to 75 will be searching for that complete game in Thursday night's preseason finale at Philadelphia. Final cuts to 53 must be made by Sept. 1.

Member of Gang Green

When Darrelle Revis took the interview room podium, he seemed to be making a fashion statement — not in the same way Curtis Martin, say, might make a statement, but a statement nonetheless.

Revis wore a purple "House Party XXXIII 1/3" T-shirt that had a large lime-green "&" on the front. His jeans were fashionably patched at the knees. But peeking from the pants bottoms were bright green sneakers with lime soles and laces.

No one had to tell Revis to go green after his NFL debut.

"We all know how much of a pro, a leader and a truly hard worker Chad is. We also all know he's our starter, but The Genius can't rule out starting Kellen in an early regular season game if Chad has trouble in the first 2 games. The O line HAS to be straightened out or it doesn't matter whos throwing"

"I have loved the Jets since 81' but let's face it fellas...This is going to be another year where the defense can't get off the field and the offense can't make a first down against the more stellar teams in the AFC! They aren't Kotite's crew by any stretch, but they aren't over the hump yet!"

"I just want Jets to have a perfectly good season, no messed up trades or injuries that shouldn't be, or rookies in the line. Kendall restructured his contract to give the jets money, he should have gotten that money back now, but you guys didn't, that's messed up. It's done now, go jets, fix the prob"
