Jets Set to Take On This Hostile Environment

File Under: Rex Ryan, New England Patriots, Gillette Stadium, Kevin O'Connell

11/22 — It's a gray day in the Massachusetts countryside, and the Jets are dressed in white for their latest one-game season, which kicks off in about a half-hour from Gillette Stadium.

The only other game that the Jets wore their white jerseys and white pants this season was for Game 2, their home-opening victory over the Patriots. On the one hand, football games aren't won by superstition. On the other, every little bit helps.

Gillette has become one of the best homefield advantages in the NFL, but the Jets have done as well as any team here during the Patriots' Super Bowl era with wins in 2001, '02, '06 and '08. No other team has won more than two games here. Of course only two other teams besides the Jets play here once a year. But here's a chart I like to put it in perspective. The records are for all Patriots regular- and postseason games from 2001 to present:

Records at Gillette    Wins    Losses     Pct.
 Jets 4 5 .444
 Rest of the NFL 10 58 .147

This won't have any bearing on today's game, of course, but it shows the Jets know how to handle the environment.

The weather doesn't look to be a factor at the start. It is a bit chilly in Foxboro but dry despite the overcast. The wind at the moment isn't blowing, but every once in a while the windstrips on the top of each goalpost flutter, so maybe later in the day Jay Feely or Stephen Gostkowski will feel the effects on a big kick. But Feely had icewater in his veins 53 weeks ago when his 34-yard field goal lifted the Jets to their 34-31 overtime victory here.

The Jets have a familiar Patriot wrinkle in their inactive list: Kevin O'Connell is the third QB and Erik Ainge is deactivated. Head coach Rex Ryan did the same thing when the Jets played New England in Game 2 in their home opener, making O'Connell, the former Patriot, the third QB.

"Third, fourth, second, it doesn't matter," O'Connell said during the week. "I prepare like I'm going to be playing in the game and I'm still trying to learn the offense and get better every day."

The Jets also deactivated KR/CB Justin Miller for the second week. Here are the rest of the Jets' inactives: LBs Vernon Gholston, Ryan Fowler and Kenwin Cummings, G Matt Slauson and DE Ropati Pitoitua.

Howard Green, who was inactive for the first Jets-Pats game, is active for this one but his cousin, Jarvis Green, is not. The Green family just can't get two of their own on the field at the same time in this series.

New England's other inactives are an interesting lot of starters and contributors for the team in red, white and blue. RBs Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris are both down, as are CB Shawn Springs, LB Rob Ninkovich, G Stephen Neal, T Matt Light and WR Sam Aiken. The Patriots are not designating a third QB.

Jeff Triplette is refereeing his ninth Jets game since 1999 and his first since last season's Meadowlands game vs. Buffalo. Jim Nantz and Phil Simms are calling their third Jets game this season for CBS. They also had the opener at Houston and the home game against Miami.

I'll be tweeting throughout the game on the Jets' Twitter page and on the CoveritLive chat on newyorkjets.com, moderated as always by Eric Allen and Kyle Richardson. My game story will be live as soon after the game as humanly possible, with my "writethrough" including quotes from the locker room going up a few hours later. EA will have a postgame blog and KR a game feature for all you early risers out there. Hopefully you'll be rising to a major Jets victory in Patriots territory.

"One bright spot.. Rhodes looked much better this week. Hitting hard and making tackles. E. Smith blew a Welker TD bad, but what can you expect? We had D. Coleman on him most of the day. For the fastest player on the team, he looked EXTREMELY slow on the field. Miller could hang with Welker. The guy set a record. Pass rush was non-existent again. TJ another 100 yard rushing game. Go Jets"
