11/03 — There's a lot to like about Braylon Edwards' addition to the Jets' offensive mix. For one thing, he arrived in the nick of time from Cleveland with Jerricho Cotchery hobbled by his hamstring to light it up on Monday night at Miami.
Edwards' receiving skills and physical stature are obviously immense, and his locker room presence is pretty impressive as well. He talks with a quiet force, sometimes with an orator's skills for unexpected emphasis of certain words and effective repetition of key phrases.
I asked Edwards, as he was getting ready to leave the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center on Monday for a six-day bye week, if he's given his new teammates the full force of the Braylon boldness yet or if there's a lot more left for everyone to feed off of once the team reconvenes next Monday.
"I think the team has seen it. Guys have made comments," he said with a smile. "I think the guys have seen that I want to win, I want to do everything in my power to win. I'm here to help. I'm not here to cause problems and be a distraction. So I've just been going out there and giving it my all, practicing hard, playing hard, and I think the guys appreciate it."
They do appreciate his attitude, and they welcome the great things that may be ahead now that he and Cotchery finally were teamed at full strength for Sunday's home rematch against the Dolphins, during which they combined for relatively tame yet still beguiling numbers of seven catches for 144 yards and Edwards' not-to-be-denied 19-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.
QB Mark Sanchez, said Cotchery, "has been working on his chemistry a lot with Braylon and Dustin [Keller]. He also gained some chemistry with David Clowney as well. Obviously Mark and I had great chemistry before I went down with the injury," J-Co said. "That's what I was hoping, that they'd be able to get into a groove while I was down, so when I came back in, we could be ready to roll as an offense."
It's too soon to say the Jets offense is ready to fly, that the passing game is set to match or exceed the production of the NFL's No. 1 rushing offense for the second straight week, primed to chase those eighth men out of the box. And there still is a shortage of evidence.
But consider that Cotchery is averaging 15.9 yards per catch (5.7 after the catch), Edwards is at 14.8 as a Jet and Clowney is at 15.1. When is the last time the Jets had three wideouts all in the close vicinity of 15 yards a catch? In 1998, Wayne Chrebet (14.4), Keyshawn Johnson (13.6) and Dedric Ward (19.1) were close, but you'd probably have to go back 1984 with Wesley Walker (15.2), Lam Jones (14.7) and Derrick Gaffney (19.0) to get a closer match.
That's why Cotchery feels confident about the foundation that's been built offensively for the second half — "We have a lot to look forward to," he said, "but we have to wait two weeks until we play another game." And why Edwards reminds anyone who asks that as a fifth-year pro, he is eager to make a push to play in his first playoff game.
"I'm not a rookie. I'm a guy who maybe some people can learn from me. And maybe I can learn from some of the veterans here," Braylon said. "But I'm definitely going to put out the best product that I can so guys will know that I'm serious about what their goal is. Their goal is to get to the Super Bowl and I'm here to help."
No Bye for the Weary
I wanted to bring you this little vignette of Edwards in the locker room before we broke out a few features for you during this bye week. On Wednesday, Eric Allen will profile the entire offense, with an emphasis on the success of the "Ground & Pound" running game. On Friday it's Kyle Richardson's turn with a review/preview of the Jets' No. 2-ranked defense. On Sunday I'll break out our Special Teams wrapup. Each feature will be accompanied by a "voting widget" so you can cast your vote on which individual player performance of the first half was your favorite.
EA will also have another blog on his chat with the Bart Scott on why the Madbacker just can't tone down the talk. We'll also have information on Pro Bowl balloting, which is now open on nfl.com, and on Friday we'll provide you with an excerpt from "No Substitute for Sundays," my good friend Steve Serby's just published book on Brett Favre's 2008 season in green and white.
By the time the smoke clears, it'll be Monday again and the players will have returned to take on the second half of the season.

Tue, November 3, 2009 - 6:22pm ET"wonder if they'll sign Braylon after this season? seems like he is behaving and not dropping passes...tough decision...plus all the possible free agents...don't know when Mangold is a FA..sign him up long term definitely..sign brick for a much lower price...sign up Leon looong term..we owe the guy his pay day..."

Tue, November 3, 2009 - 8:13pm ET"I have to admit, I was one of the skeptics when Braylon was acquired, just because of his off the field antics and his attitude in general, not because of his skill set, but it appears he has turned it around and I for one am very happy to see him in a Jet uniform, hope he is in one for a long, long time. The chemistry with MS and all of the receivers is going to get better and better."
scjoe Said:
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 8:25pm ET"A lot has been said about the play calling, mostly negative, I don't agree. You can't have it both ways, you can't complain it should be a run when you believe it should be pass, or visa versa. The successful teams win with a balanced offense. The first half of the Miami game was pound and ground, and that is fine, but we scored 3pts. That is not fine. Do whatever you need to do to win the game."
scjoe Said:
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 8:39pm ET"One thing that I think got lost in all of this is the punting, or lack there of, by the Jets. I was in awe watching that Miami punter booming kicks of 55 and 62 yards and dramatically changing field position, while our guy was getting off those 30 and 33 yarders. If Miami, Buffalo, and Oakland can find these guys, why can't we?"

Tue, November 3, 2009 - 9:32pm ET"Braylon has shown his determination and work ethic thus far and I hope it continues. Over time I hope he and Sanchez can be on the same page especially w/ that touch fade pass in the RZ. I for one have been very critical of this team, mainly Shotty, but I'll give it a rest for awhile-only b/c it's obvious that injuries are killing this team, and that's somewhat unavoidable! Get healthy! "

Wed, November 4, 2009 - 1:35am ET"Nice stats on yds/p/catch, Randy, show them to Schotty so he doesn't call any more of those incredibly risky, low-yield 1-yard squareouts. On second thought, don't show him anything on passing till he learns to run the ball 3 times on 2nd and 6 from the 8 when a TD can win the game. Nah, next time you see Schotty, just show him the door. I don't really expect much on O until somebody does that."
poobah Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 6:12am ET"with first and ten at the 12 with about 2 mins, how do you not run the ball in with your ground and pound offense? with 10 yards to cover for a first, even if they stack the box you should be able to get through them. i love schotty's play calling at times but at moments like that i just don't see how you can make such poor decisions. that was the whole game right there despite all the good and bad that came before."
Ira Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 7:23am ET"Randy, Edwards is the big target the Jets haven't had since Key was traded. And of course now with everybody in place the x-factor is that keller will be open more as we saw last week. Edwards surely makes Sanchez's job easier and i expect good things in the 2nd half. But they still have to stick with the run if they are going to go anywhere. GO JETS!!!!"
uncle joe Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 7:24am ET"I was screaming to trade for Edwards before the draft. He's the best reciever we got since Toon. Can't believe the Giants,Ravens or Dolphins didn't try to get him.I knew after his last incident that he would come cheap. In addition to his big time talent,he brings a swagger to a relatively quiet offense to match our Defense.Have'nt had that in a Long TIME! Tannenbaum is the best GM in the NFL!!"

Wed, November 4, 2009 - 9:15am ET"Edwards is a stud and still very young. I think Tanni is just setting the tone for what is acceptable as a Jet for his next contract. I have learned that Tanni is all about leverage and he has leverage during this season to get the best out of BE and maybe even get him to realize his own potential. BE needed a change, after 4 seasons of many many losses you have to question coming to work!!!"
Ira Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 9:19am ET"Randy, So who do we root for this week. The Pats or Fish? Even though the Pats have games with us,Indy and the Saints maybe we are better do have Miami to lose to get them to 5 losses. Really we just need to take care of our own business. Just curious what your thoughts are?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Ira, I'd say since we lost twice to Miami, it's good to keep the Dolphins behind us in the standings. We also have nine weeks to try to catch New England and the opportunity in Week 11 to go 2-0 over the Patriots. All that being said, whatever happens between the Pats and 'Fins on Sunday is fine by me. "

Wed, November 4, 2009 - 9:50am ET"I would like to know if and how much longer we must be forced to watch our team play with those hideous uniforms!!! What did the Titans ever do to requireus to honor their memory 3 & 4 times a year'.....The Jets and their fans bleed Green not yellow and whatever color those rags are! MERCHANDISING $$$$ Is the real reason....Have you not sucked enough money out of our pockets!"

Wed, November 4, 2009 - 10:10am ET"Randy, The Jets traded a conditional #3 pick for Edwards which could and most likely become a #2. They also traded a conditional #2, 3 or 4 for Sheppard which most likely will become a 4. Do you know what the conditions were for these trades. "
Randy Lange Said:
"No, joe b, I don't, although I'm sure some beat reporters speculated on the conditions at the time of the trade."
Jets09 Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 11:27am ET"BLINKA, yes. The Jets gave up a 3rd and 5th just to get BE. It's been reported the 3rd round pick the Jets gave up could change to a 2nd rounder depending on the # of receptions BE finishes with. If there isn't a new CBA in place, like its being speculated, BE will be a RFA, like Leon, at the end of the year. "
Anthony Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 12:28pm ET"I like what Braylon has brought so far he is producing and giving a heck of an effort every week. We better resign this guy regardless how it gets done. I just hope in these up coming weeks we find a way to win...It stinks listening to other fans constantly rubbing it in...J-E-T-s....."

Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 1:25pm ET"Mark Sanchez may already be the best play-fake artist in the NFL. His one-yard touchdown run came on a play-fake to Thomas Jones that was so convincing Dolphins defenders thought Jones' fumbled the ball while Sanchez was busy spiking it between his legs in the corner"
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 1:35pm ET"Keller had a great game including a diving touchdown grab and a clutch, leaping catch in traffic to put the Jets in position to possibly win the game with two minutes left. He could have had a second touchdown but was tackled just shy of the goal-line. "
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 1:56pm ET"We gave up a 3rd & a 5th for Braylon & a 4th for Lito. We also gave up a 7th for Oconnell. We have a 1st, 2nd & 6th rounfdpick next year."
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 2:03pm ET"Pouha, Devito & Douglas have done a great job filling in for Jenkins. I thought we would have teams run over us once he was done for the year. We shut down the wildcat the had 104 total yards vs us passing & rushing. Thats why this loss hurts so much WE SPANKED THEM! "
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 2:06pm ET"Tom Jones is on a pace for 1,500 yards & 14 TD'S those are hugh numbers he is due alot of money in march but we need to bring him back. I dont think the Jets can afford to pay Jones, Braylon & Leon my guess is Jones & Braylon will be back & Leon wont he is not a full time back & he doesnt fit the mold of what Ryan is trying to do. Dont get me wrong I think he is great but he wasnt used the right "
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 2:08pm ET"way this year he is not a between the tackles runner he should be used like last year. Draws, screens & short passes when he is in open space he is gone."
BriGuyinFL Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 3:07pm ET"@ Spicer. That fake was awesome. Not only were the defenders looking for the ball but the back line judge was also looking at the pile as well for the ball. I would have liked to see us run it at the end of the game but you have to believe that schotty knows something us fans did not. I looked at my dad at the end of this game and said, this is what being a jet fan is, I hope rex changes that."
Ira Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 3:44pm ET"Tom Spicer, Thats right they sure have. The Jets have not given up a 100 yd rusher yet this year and have held the other teams to 0-8 on 4th down conversions. And you are just seeing the start of Keller having a big time 2nd half of the season. Going 6-2 in the 2nd half is not out of the question. Everybody comes back focused and fresh and a few adjustments and away we go. GO JETS!!!!!"
Row Said:
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 6:10pm ET"I really like Rex's presser where he talked about players staying in their lanes on kickoff. He should have set players aside and made it apparent. Bar a Sanchez meltdown, we can go 8-0 after the bye. The Colts game is going to be difficult. Jags can run, a lot! We have to game plan effectively. Schotty has improved enormously! Sanchez has to make good decisions. Go Jets {IN GREEN AND WHITE}"
Ira Said:
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 7:08am ET"Thank goodness the baseball season is over. Congrats to all Yankee fans. Man i am jealous of them. Now we have to see them have a parade tomorrow. I can only hope there will be a Green and White parade someday very soon."

Tony B Said:

Fri, November 6, 2009 - 12:12am ET"Schotty you better pick up your game man. Alot of people are counting on you. Maybe play football on your playstation and you can pick up some ideas. You gotta engineer some more drives that will work . Concentrate on Goal line plays. Concentrate on screen plays. Stuff out of the I formation. Try throwing out of the I, its a good trick"
