File Under: Chad Pennington, Darrelle Revis, Eric Mangini, Kellen Clemens

08/19 — Regrets? Eric Mangini, like Frank Sinatra, has had a few, but not over announcing way back in February that Chad Pennington was his starting quarterback heading into this new season.

"No, not at all," the Jets head coach said at today's midday news conference when asked if he had any doubts about that call in light of Friday's performances against Minnesota. "I'm very comfortable with that decision. I think Chad's had an outstanding camp. There were a couple of throws he'd like to have back and I'd like him to have back. Chad's a good decision maker, and I'm really comfortable with that decision."

Mangini, in his first remarks on the game since reviewing the video all day Saturday, also wasn't going to agree with the premise that a veteran QB shouldn't make such mistakes as throwing two interceptions that get returned for touchdowns.

"You look around the league and you see other teams and the way their preseason games unfold, there are some proven veterans who've made some similar decisions," he said. "Training camp is a time where you do go through the process again. All this is part of the preparation, part of the process. Collectively we want to keep moving forward and making progress."

(Mangini did not bring up any specific examples, but Tom Brady also threw an interception taken back for a touchdown in New England's Friday night loss to Tennessee. For their careers, Pennington has thrown five INTs returned for TDs in all games in his career, Brady has thrown seven.)

None of this is to say that Mangini and his staff haven't noticed Kellen Clemens' growth curve since enduring a slow start to the OTA/minicamp period.

"I've been really pleased with Kellen's progress throughout the whole off-season," the coach said. "That comes with getting the extra reps. You look at the third quarterback, which primarily he was last year. As the third, you're getting primarily show-team responsibility as opposed to reps with the starting unit. This year he's gotten a huge chunk of reps."

The Jets have just taken their Hofstra University practice field for the start of what promises to be a pretty eventful week of correcting mistakes from Friday, getting back to making forward progress and preparing to take on the Giants on Saturday night. A feature for the fans at today's single session: First-round pick Darrelle Revis should see his first extended action of training camp.

Check back early this evening for our postpractice report.

"Mangini said it right...Chad is a good decision maker. This offense is built around not turning over the ball. It is not about arm strength;it is about decision making and timing. Chad is the best we have. Go Jets!!!!!"

"maybe Revis can play some defensive tackle if playing in the secondary does'nt work out right off the back ! well he can't do any worst than what we have."
