10/28 — Jets fans who are also fanatical about the New York Jets Flight Crew will have a great opportunity to check out the cheerleaders at a different time and in a different venue than usual.
Right in the middle of college football, the group will star in its very first television special, "Making of the Flight Crew," presented by WCBS-TV, Channel 2 in New York, this Saturday at 2:30 p.m., a perfect half-hour-long lead-in to the Florida-Georgia SEC Game of the Week.
"The Jets Flight Crew are some of the most talented and beautiful women in New York," said director Denise Garvey. "Fans who tune in will see the production team behind the glitz and glamour of the newest cheerleading squad in the NFL. This is how far the Flight Crew has come in three years, and this show represents the clear vision of where the team is heading."
Flight Crew veteran Jenn lends her enthusiasm to the show as the hostess taking viewers through the process of assembling this year's team.
"You’re going to get to see the audition process, how girls try out for the team, the final round," she said. "And you're going to get to see the making of our first-ever Flight Crew calendar.”
The show was produced by Rich Gentile, the Jets' senior director of broadcasting and multimedia production, and his staff. And what Rich's cameras documented is what I and my partner Eric Allen got to see all this year as we followed the Crew.
We got to chat with Jenn and her teammates and watch them work as glamorous models at Jones Beach and on the beach at Belmar, N.J., back in the late spring. We checked back in with them at the Jets Shop in midtown Manhattan in September when they all signed autographs on the spectacular finished calendar. We saw them when they were auditioning in May, when they were introduced during Jets Week in June and when they took the field before the Patriots home opener in September.
The Flight Crew is an amazing group of young women that is getting more and more recognition among sports fans and media in this area and nationally, and Saturday's special is just one more element to the Jets' cheerleaders achieving liftoff.
"What's so fantastic about the special is that the fans are invited 'backstage' to see the creative process of putting together a team and a calendar that represents this new cheerleading squad," Garvey said. "The outcome is always exciting, but it's the process of getting to the finished product that truly gives me a sense of satisfaction."
If you've got time between college kickoffs Saturday, give "Making of the Flight Crew" a view. I think you'll find it a cheerful half-hour.
