10/16 — Like the stock market, some of the Jets' injured players are trending upward, some are not. And some are not quite as bad as had been reported earlier today.
The up news is that cornerback Lito Sheppard, who's missed 3½ games with a quadriceps injury, practiced full again today and is ready to return just in time for him and Darrelle Revis to take on Terrell Owens, Lee Evans and the Bills.
"I think Lito's going to play," head coach Rex Ryan said at today's news conference, two days before the Jets return home to play Buffalo on Fan Appreciation Day. "We feel good about him stepping up in there and starting. We'll see how he feels during the game. I don't anticipate any problems."
CB Donald Strickland (ankle), who's been sidelined along with Sheppard ever since both got hurt in Game 2 vs. New England. Strickland was limited at today's final practice of the week, held in the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center fieldhouse, and is questionable for the game.
That's the good news. The bad news is that WRs Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) and Brad Smith (quadriceps) are both doubtful.
But Cotchery is not definitively out of the Bills game as of now, contrary to ESPN stating this morning that Cotchery "will not play Sunday."
"I know it's been reported that J-Co's already out, but that's news to me," Ryan said. "Do I expect him to play and all that? I'm not sure, but it's doubtful. I still would make that decision a gametime decision."
Then back on the uptick, T Damien Woody and DE Shaun Ellis. Ellis (knee) was limited in practice, Woody (ankle) didn't work. Both are questionable.
Ryan said about Woody's injury: "His is one that 'This is the NFL,' know what I mean? Through the miracle of medicine, he'll probably be ready to go Sunday. In other words, he took a shot last week and he'll take a shot again this week and we'll see how it goes. He's a tough guy, durable, wants to be out there. He's studying, getting all the mental reps."
"It’s not the first time that I’ve done something like this," Woody said. "When you're physically not 100 percent, you have to work on your mental, make sure you're mentally prepared, and that’s what I’ve been doing all week. I’m just doing my rehab and getting ready for the game on Sunday."
The coach added that Wayne Hunter has been "outstanding" in practice in case he's needed to play right tackle, but "we think Damien will be able to play."
Today's news conference was short, which often happens on Friday after most of the questions are asked on Wednesday and Thursday. But after bantering and commenting about the Baltimore Ravens' game against Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson and the Vikings and the Baltimore Colts band, he ended the formal part of his news conference with a heartfelt wish for the Jets and the fans who will be very appreciative if this final sentiment comes about:
"All right. Let's get us a win."
Cold Hand Mark
If you're wondering how the Southern California quarterback is going to handle the possible rainy cold at the Meadowlands on Sunday, so were reporters, who asked Mark Sanchez what he's doing to adjust to the adverse conditions, which, even if they don't arrive Sunday, will arrive for him this season.
"Coach [Matt] Cavanaugh and Coach [Brian] Schottenheimer have been helping me adjust," Sanchez said today. "I tried wearing a glove on my non-throwing hand, using a hand warmer and staying loose between reps so I can play my best. Still, I am going to continue to work and get used to it."
Braylon's Longest Play
One final note on Braylon Edwards' Jets debut at Miami. It should be noted that his night included not just 64 yards on five receptions but 49 more yards on the pass interference penalty against Will Allen that set up the Green & White's final TD.
Add it all together and it gives him 113 yards — his fourth 100-yard game in his four career Monday night showings, all since 2008.
That is also the longest penalty gained by the Jets against an opponent since I began "itemizing" Jets penalties in 1992. Here are the six longest penalties, all obviously pass interference calls, marched off against the opponents in the last 18 seasons:
| Year | Jets Player | Penalty On Player, Team | Yards |
| 1992 | WR Terance Mathis | S Mike Prior, IND | 47 |
| 1996 | WR Wayne Chrebet | S Brent Alexander, ARZ | 45 |
| 1999 | WR Dedric Ward | CB Jeremy Lincoln, NYG | 47 |
| 2005 | WR Justin McCareins | CB Quentin Jammer, SD | 40 |
| 2007 | WR Jerricho Cotchery | CB Ike Taylor, PIT | 41 |
| 2009 | WR Braylon Edwards | CB Will Allen, MIA | 49 |
Sounds Good
A lot of Jets fans have asked us what happened to the air raid siren that punctuated the timeouts and got fans going during the home-opening Meadowlands triumph over the Patriots. Although the fans and our game operations people also loved the sound of sirens and the reaction we got to it, it actually sounded too good — it was just like the stadium evacuation siren.
Protecting our fans is our No. 1 priority and we didn't want to mix any signals, so the air raid siren wasn't revved up for Game 3 vs. Tennessee.
But for Buffalo we've got a new noise for all in attendance at Fan Appreciation Day. Brian Mulligan, our director of events and game operations (I like to call him Doctor Bré), reports that the new siren this week is similar to an NYPD wail.
So it may be a different sound but it should all sound the same to you Green & White faithful in the stands for the Bills game. When you hear the wail, make noise.
And don't forget to couple the roar of the crowd with lots of color. Fans are being asked to wear green to this game to create a "Green Out" effect to greet the Bills. And if Sunday's forecast of breezy, cold and rainy holds true, don't overlook the option of wearing your green poncho over your green sweater or T-shirt or game jersey. As Gordon Gekko once almost said, "Green is good."

That being said I'm praying that J-Co is a go for at least decoy duty at the outset, Cothchery,Clowney, Edwards is a formidable trio, especially with Leon out of the backfield and keller at TE, it creates Mismatch Hell"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 2:43pm ET"I'm happy to see not too much agonizing over J-Co missing some snaps even if we all love his consistency and know he's one of the class guys in the NFL. I guess this means we've realized we need as many weapons as we can get on O. Jet fans should remember that unfortunately, injuries are often the only way some guys ever get off the bench and prove themselves, i.e. Miles Austin, I rest my case!"
Ira Said:
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 3:07pm ET"Wish J-Co a fast recovery and hope he is 100% by the Fish game. He can rest next week too. Edwards was huge Monday night and once he really gets going with Sanchez this offense will be something to deal with. Edwards and Clowney will now open things up for Keller in the middle of the field. Teams won't be able to double Keller all the time now. Love Rex's closing remark, GO JETS!!!!"
Jusmos Said:
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 3:22pm ET"Randy, Great article with all the stats, I like to track stats myself. I do want to ask if the double post of Woody's comment after the chart was intentional or a mistype. Just curious. Thanks for the hard work and dedication."
Randy Lange Said:
"Jusmos, that was a technical glitch that has since been corrected. Check the Radar entry out again because I've added a final note about a new sound of sirens that will be heard at the Meadowlands during Sunday's game vs. the Bills."

Ira Said:
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 4:19pm ET"Its going to be good to have Lito back. I believe his contract had a clause about playing 85% of the snaps which at this point he won't be able to reach. Wonder how that will play out after the season. I still think he is a very good CB and hope he stays healthy for the rest of the season now."

Fri, October 16, 2009 - 4:33pm ET"Hi Randy! Greetings for mexico, again. I hope the jets finally have a better game against buffalo, like ryan said I was very upset when we lost the game, defense was playing soft , I think they were very overconfident. we must put our feet onthe ground again, playing passionate and focused. Edwards will give us some good plays and tds as well as clowney and rbs. Mark should test his arm more ."

Fri, October 16, 2009 - 4:35pm ET"As much as I hate to see both J-Co and B.Smith out im excited to see my man Braylon and the Clown on the field at the same time for most of the game.Thats one heck of a duo, with Keller and Maybe Woodhead running up the middle in the slot. Know hes not on the team yet but he needs to be.The team is running short of Offensive options and playbook(Schotty).Dont want some other team snagging him up"
Benz Said:
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 5:08pm ET"Randy I wouldn't have focused on the 49 yard penalty, as a Jets fan I will admit that it was a pretty bad call by the refs. More disapointing was the fact that Braylon flat out dropped the ball. And 36, I am worried...Miami destoyed us on the ground. We were lucky to stay in the game with the penalties and fake punts. "
Row Said:
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 5:20pm ET"Edwards not only made some amazing catches, but he took some serious hits. If Buffalo can rush the passer, this could get tough with our inconsistent QB play/offense. I just want us to run the ball, it's getting really old watching Sanchez make a throw no one could catch on 3rd down b/c he didn't want to get hit. I'd rather run on 3rd and 2. Go Jets"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 6:20pm ET"I'm with you on a lot of stuff as usual, Row, like the fact that any WR who can make catches and take hits like BE can drop a few balls every year no problem. Anyone ever think that some of the ones he's "dropped" other WRs wouldn't have touched? But every time you dump on MS for no reason I'll be there, Row. He throws better than any QB we've had in decades, especially when we block for him."
Old Rogue Said:
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 6:26pm ET"If in fact they don't activate Woodhead for this game (and I read they might), then we are going to have to see something of Wallace Wright. This would be a good game to see what otherwise unseen players have got. I wouldn't be surprised to see Revis and/or Lowery lined up at wideout."
supercooljetfan Said:
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 8:31pm ET"is it only me or is lito always probable and he never plays???"
Randy Lange Said:
"If you're talking about this year with the Jets, supercool, then it's you. In the previous three weeks, Sheppard was listed as out twice and doubtful last week with his quad injury."
Alan Said:
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 10:45pm ET"I hope people who are talking about Woodhead in the slot do realize that Wallace Wright will be the 3rd reciever if J-Co and B.Smith are out, we also have a 6'4' reciever on the practice squad i believe (Marcus Henry)?if anything Woodhead would be a 5th option"
Gregg from CA Said:
Sat, October 17, 2009 - 12:05am ET"Randy: Some clarification, please. Someone suggested (in a previous Radar entry) that Ainge would be useful as part of the Seminole. Isn't there a restriction on entry/re-entry for 3rd QBs? I remember some sort of rule regarding that as part of them being exempted from the 45-dressed rule, but don't know the specifics. Thanks in advance!"
Randy Lange Said:
"Gregg, if Erik Ainge were to be designated as the third QB for a game, he could play at any time. But if he played in the first three quarters, neither of the first two QBs could return to that game."
MIKE Said:
Sat, October 17, 2009 - 12:13am ET"When the Jets use there "Wildcat"formation I'm not sure if Leon is the guy I would have taking the snaps. Brown for the Fish can throw well and run with power thats why it works for them. However I think Brad Smith in shotgun with Leon and Keller linedon either side could be something tough to defend. Both can run swing routes and pull out the LB's while Smith can either throw or run draw plays."
AOKP Said:
Sat, October 17, 2009 - 12:25am ET"whose to say every team now wont run a little wild cat on us, on those 3rd n shorts, seein as how we cant stop it, hey Randy, have they been working that on defense in practice, and how the defense, and practice been looking overall? we cant take buffulo lightly....and we cant afford to lose back to back games any more this season, great teams dont lose back to back games...GO JETS!!!"
Randy Lange Said:
"AOKP, yes, the Jets defense works on defending the Wildcat in practice. I can't tell you how practice is going because newyorkjets.com, as with all other media outlets, can watch only the first half hour of practice, when the emphasis is on stretching, special teams and individual drills. But from everything I heard, this week was a goood week."

Sat, October 17, 2009 - 6:47am ET"how can anyone say it was a that PI was a bad call? The Fins DB clearly grabbed Braylons left arm as the ball was in the air...just because he let go a moment before the ball arrived doesn't mean it isn't a penalty. Thats like the old, block em in the back- throw my hands up like I'm being held up play"

Sat, October 17, 2009 - 1:24pm ET"Row, The Jets will pass but i do agree with the forecast of rain and wind this game is perfect for TJ, Leon and Greene. Keller will get back into the mix tomorrow. Sanchez has never played in a game with the temp below 55. I think he will be fine. Too much is being made of it. Once the temps hit 10-15 then thats a different story. Jets 24- Bills 13 GO JETS!!!!"

Jimmer Said:
Sat, October 17, 2009 - 5:19pm ET"Woodhead at wr? A 5'7 wr? Are we takling peewee? With a rather short QB, we need tall WR's. DL will be knocking every ball down. Woodhead might eat DB's for lunch, but, he's too short for a wr. "
Jimmer Said:
Sat, October 17, 2009 - 5:25pm ET"O-line needs help this week. Anyone who has watched Buf knows they blitz alot. Not like we do, but look what they did to Miami compared to what we did. Max protect might be the perfect answer with BE and Clowney's speed. I'm concerned about Sanchez getting hurt this week with a spread offense. Our backs need to protect him big time. Sanchez is a rookie, protect him. "
Jets Fan Tom Since '64 Said:
Sat, October 17, 2009 - 9:54pm ET"Jimmer, at 5' 9" Woodhead is actually an inch taller than Welker, right, Randy? Agree about BE and Clowney in the same lineup, though, that'll be somethin' to see. Plenty of posts this summer worrying about what we'd do if any of our WRs got injured. Now they have and there may be an up side, i.e. the other wise old saying about how the letters used in Chinese for CRISIS also spell OPPORTUNITY!"
Randy Lange Said:
"Tom, Danny Woodhead and Wes Welker are both listed at 5'9"."

This would be a really nice time to have Woodhead on the 53, but that's not going to happen. I can see Leon getting some snaps as a receiver this week, probably in the slot, which would not be a bad thing. I can also see a heavy dose of TJ,Leon, and Greene in the run game. Jets 23- Bills 10"
