File Under: Brad Smith, Jerricho Cotchery, Rex Ryan, Lito Sheppard, Donald Strickland

10/16 — Like the stock market, some of the Jets' injured players are trending upward, some are not. And some are not quite as bad as had been reported earlier today.

The up news is that cornerback Lito Sheppard, who's missed 3½ games with a quadriceps injury, practiced full again today and is ready to return just in time for him and Darrelle Revis to take on Terrell Owens, Lee Evans and the Bills.

"I think Lito's going to play," head coach Rex Ryan said at today's news conference, two days before the Jets return home to play Buffalo on Fan Appreciation Day. "We feel good about him stepping up in there and starting. We'll see how he feels during the game. I don't anticipate any problems."

CB Donald Strickland (ankle), who's been sidelined along with Sheppard ever since both got hurt in Game 2 vs. New England. Strickland was limited at today's final practice of the week, held in the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center fieldhouse, and is questionable for the game.

That's the good news. The bad news is that WRs Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) and Brad Smith (quadriceps) are both doubtful.

But Cotchery is not definitively out of the Bills game as of now, contrary to ESPN stating this morning that Cotchery "will not play Sunday."

"I know it's been reported that J-Co's already out, but that's news to me," Ryan said. "Do I expect him to play and all that? I'm not sure, but it's doubtful. I still would make that decision a gametime decision."

Then back on the uptick, T Damien Woody and DE Shaun Ellis. Ellis (knee) was limited in practice, Woody (ankle) didn't work. Both are questionable.

Ryan said about Woody's injury: "His is one that 'This is the NFL,' know what I mean? Through the miracle of medicine, he'll probably be ready to go Sunday. In other words, he took a shot last week and he'll take a shot again this week and we'll see how it goes. He's a tough guy, durable, wants to be out there. He's studying, getting all the mental reps."

"It’s not the first time that I’ve done something like this," Woody said. "When you're physically not 100 percent, you have to work on your mental, make sure you're mentally prepared, and that’s what I’ve been doing all week. I’m just doing my rehab and getting ready for the game on Sunday."

The coach added that Wayne Hunter has been "outstanding" in practice in case he's needed to play right tackle, but "we think Damien will be able to play."

Today's news conference was short, which often happens on Friday after most of the questions are asked on Wednesday and Thursday. But after bantering and commenting about the Baltimore Ravens' game against Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson and the Vikings and the Baltimore Colts band, he ended the formal part of his news conference with a heartfelt wish for the Jets and the fans who will be very appreciative if this final sentiment comes about:

"All right. Let's get us a win."

Cold Hand Mark

If you're wondering how the Southern California quarterback is going to handle the possible rainy cold at the Meadowlands on Sunday, so were reporters, who asked Mark Sanchez what he's doing to adjust to the adverse conditions, which, even if they don't arrive Sunday, will arrive for him this season.

"Coach [Matt] Cavanaugh and Coach [Brian] Schottenheimer have been helping me adjust," Sanchez said today. "I tried wearing a glove on my non-throwing hand, using a hand warmer and staying loose between reps so I can play my best. Still, I am going to continue to work and get used to it."

Braylon's Longest Play

One final note on Braylon Edwards' Jets debut at Miami. It should be noted that his night included not just 64 yards on five receptions but 49 more yards on the pass interference penalty against Will Allen that set up the Green & White's final TD.

Add it all together and it gives him 113 yards — his fourth 100-yard game in his four career Monday night showings, all since 2008.

That is also the longest penalty gained by the Jets against an opponent since I began "itemizing" Jets penalties in 1992. Here are the six longest penalties, all obviously pass interference calls, marched off against the opponents in the last 18 seasons:

Year Jets Player Penalty On Player, Team Yards
1992 WR Terance Mathis S Mike Prior, IND 47
1996 WR Wayne Chrebet S Brent Alexander, ARZ 45
1999 WR Dedric Ward CB Jeremy Lincoln, NYG 47
2005 WR Justin McCareins CB Quentin Jammer, SD 40
2007 WR Jerricho Cotchery CB Ike Taylor, PIT 41
2009 WR Braylon Edwards CB Will Allen, MIA 49

Sounds Good

A lot of Jets fans have asked us what happened to the air raid siren that punctuated the timeouts and got fans going during the home-opening Meadowlands triumph over the Patriots. Although the fans and our game operations people also loved the sound of sirens and the reaction we got to it, it actually sounded too good — it was just like the stadium evacuation siren.

Protecting our fans is our No. 1 priority and we didn't want to mix any signals, so the air raid siren wasn't revved up for Game 3 vs. Tennessee.

But for Buffalo we've got a new noise for all in attendance at Fan Appreciation Day. Brian Mulligan, our director of events and game operations (I like to call him Doctor Bré), reports that the new siren this week is similar to an NYPD wail.

So it may be a different sound but it should all sound the same to you Green & White faithful in the stands for the Bills game. When you hear the wail, make noise.

And don't forget to couple the roar of the crowd with lots of color. Fans are being asked to wear green to this game to create a "Green Out" effect to greet the Bills. And if Sunday's forecast of breezy, cold and rainy holds true, don't overlook the option of wearing your green poncho over your green sweater or T-shirt or game jersey. As Gordon Gekko once almost said, "Green is good."

"Woodhead at wr? A 5'7 wr? Are we takling peewee? With a rather short QB, we need tall WR's. DL will be knocking every ball down. Woodhead might eat DB's for lunch, but, he's too short for a wr. "

"O-line needs help this week. Anyone who has watched Buf knows they blitz alot. Not like we do, but look what they did to Miami compared to what we did. Max protect might be the perfect answer with BE and Clowney's speed. I'm concerned about Sanchez getting hurt this week with a spread offense. Our backs need to protect him big time. Sanchez is a rookie, protect him. "

"Jimmer, at 5' 9" Woodhead is actually an inch taller than Welker, right, Randy? Agree about BE and Clowney in the same lineup, though, that'll be somethin' to see. Plenty of posts this summer worrying about what we'd do if any of our WRs got injured. Now they have and there may be an up side, i.e. the other wise old saying about how the letters used in Chinese for CRISIS also spell OPPORTUNITY!"
