10/07 — Mike Tannenbaum was on his way out to practice this morning, but he knew there would be a few questions the assembled reporters might want to ask him so he stopped by for an informal eight-minute news conference in the media room.
The subject, of course, is WR Braylon Edwards, the newest Jet, acquired from the Cleveland Browns in a trade for WR Chansi Stuckey, LB Jason Trusnik and undisclosed draft picks. Eric Allen will have the news story on Mike T's remarks and Edwards, who has not yet arrived at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center today but is expected to talk with reporters later this afternoon.
But there were a few key talking points that Tannenbaum addressed that are worth stressing now.
For one thing, we knew Mr. T would stress that Edwards will be a part of the Jets' efforts this season but that he's not going to measure Braylon and the trade by how he compares to that marvelous 2007 Browns season of 80 receptions, 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns.
"We're excited to have him. We like the environment he's coming into," Tannenbaum said. "He has a lot of good teammates that are going to be supportive for him to be successful. I think he's going to help us be a winning football team. I'm not into receptions or touchdowns — I'm into winning football. Whatever he could do to help us win, block in the running game, take coverages to his side of the field, that's what we're looking for. Obviously there'll be a lot of production as well, but we're not going to assess this trade based on X catches or number of touchdowns. It's more about the total package."
That package includes investigations by the NFL and Cleveland police following accusations Edwards assaulted a man outside a nightclub in downtown Cleveland. But also, as we knew he would, Mike T said that, while the NFL has give the Jets no assurances, the Jets completed their homework.
"We reached out to the league and [vice president of security] Steve Yarnell reached out to law enforcement," he said. "We're comfortable in adding Braylon. We'll cooperate with all the authorities, but we're glad he's here. We did all our due diligence and we're comfortable adding him to the team."
The final point I want to make is the people side of this deal. Fans will debate — already are debating — the pluses and minuses of adding Edwards to the Green & White equation and taking Stuckey and Trusnik out of it. But Chansi and Jason are two good guys, solid citizens and good players and the difficulty of this trade was in more than just putting together the right players and draft picks for the Browns to say "Let's make a deal."
"I had a gut-wrenching conversation with Jason Trusnik," Tannenbaum said. "As a GM — this may not make complete sense to you — but Darrelle Revis, Mark Sanchez, D'Brickashaw, you take those guys in the first round, you expect them to come in and be really good players.
"But I get much more of a feeling of accomplishment when a guy like Jason comes in as a free agent ... or Chansi Stuckey comes in as a seventh-round pick, and with their character and their work ethic become the players they are. I feel such a sense of fulfillment as a GM. And it just tears your guts out to let them go, to leave your building, because you do everything you can to get those types of guys in the building."
But in the late hours Tuesday night, he, head coach Rex Ryan and owner Woody Johnson weighed the deal and decided to pull the lever.
"Those are really tough calls to make. At the end of the day, as a general manager and as a head coach, we have to do what's best for the Jets. But as a human being, I'll tell you, it tore me up to say goodbye to those two guys this morning."
The bottom line, though, is that Mike T, Rex and Woody feel they've added a player who will help the Jets' passing game, running game, offense and team as we move forward through the regular season, toward the playoffs and toward the ultimate goal of a Super Bowl.
"We had to give up value, no question about it," Tannenbaum said, "but we're excited about the value we're getting."

Business sometimes is a cold deal but i am sure Stuckey and Trusnik will go on to have good careers. Who knows, maybe someday they end up being on the Jets again."

Here are the results as of 2 pm: Do you think the Browns are better off with or without Braylon Edwards? The Browns need Edwards 6% Good riddance 94% The Jets did the Browns a huge favor by taking the immature crybaby with bad hands and a "world owes me a living" attitude."

Wed, October 7, 2009 - 2:09pm ET"Browns fan reading your web page to see what "you think" of the trade for Edwards. Happy to hear we are getting two good guys. We're going nowhere this year, so it doesn't hurt us. Edwards is a good guy (forget about the punch), not a trouble maker, and although he has dropped "a lot" of passes right to him, he can still make a circus catch and needs to be double covered "just in case". "
scjoe Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 2:20pm ET"There are just to many if's about this trade. Will he be suspended, is he here for only one year, does he stay out of trouble off the field (this is NY, not Cleveland) and most importantly, is he the receiver people believe he is? Another thought, how many more high draft picks can we give away before it comes back and bites us in the place we sit?"

Wed, October 7, 2009 - 2:37pm ET"I think the worst problem I see with this trade is he becomes a FA after this year. It's a contract year, and he's gonna perform. I look to see a long term signing at the end of the season, before the playoffs. Really have no problem with losing Stuckey, although I can say nothing bad about the guy! Good luck to all the players in the trade! Can he play this weekend?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Row, Rex Ryan will comment on this in a few minutes at today's late news conference, but the plan is for Braylon Edwards to be ready to go Monday night at Miami."
Jeremy Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 2:37pm ET"This deal has way more downside than potential success. He was going to be a free agent next year-he may be suspended for being an idiot Monday night. Granted he may have a fresh start in NY but let's face it he has to prove he is worth Stuckey, Trusnik and 2 draft picks. Unless he really steps it up and doesn't drop balls-this could be a huge failure. We just traded a #2 for a #2 + 3 players-ouch"

Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 2:48pm ET"Thanks to Lito Sheppard's quad injury, the Jets won't have to give the Eagles as much in the 2010 draft. Part of the trade was a conditional pick in 2010, which could have been as high as a second rounder. But one of the requirements was 85 percent playing time for Lito, which can't happen now that he's missed 2 1/2 games."
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 2:51pm ET"Braylon Edwards did not throw the punch that struck Cleveland nightclub promoter Edward Givens in their alleged dispute on Monday morning. A source with knowledge of the situation tells the paper that a member of Edwards' entourage hit Givens. The Jets were well aware of Edwards' situation before trading for him on Wednesday, and GM Mike Tannenbaum is "convinced he's not the bad guy he has been"
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 2:53pm ET"painted as." If Edwards did not throw the punch, he shouldn't be in danger of any league-imposed discipline. he is not going to be suspened & he did not do anything he can not be responsible for what other guys do. "

Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 3:03pm ET"Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum says Braylon Edwards is being prepared to start Monday night's game against the Dolphins. It's a little bit like Ty Law last year, who came in late and played against the Patriots on Thursday night," Tannenbaum said. Law played extensively in that game, covering Randy Moss most of the night. Edwards is familiar with Jets OC Brian Schottenheimer's offense, having dealt "
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 3:05pm ET"with similar terminology under ex-Browns coordinator Rob Chudzinski. Edwards had his career year under Chudzinski in 2007, catching 80 balls for 1,289 yards and 16 scores. They think he can step in & play right away."
Tom Spicer Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 3:08pm ET"Jerricho Cotchery will now be lining up across from a proven receiver in Braylon Edwards. With Edwards at split end, Cotchery now moves back to his natural flanker spot, where he'll catch more underneath and over-the-middle passes, putting his after-catch skills to better use. "

scjoe Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 3:29pm ET"@ Tom Spicer, A couple of great points, I sure hope the first one about Edwards NOT throwing that punch has some merit to it. The second about how it can benefit Cotchery. Now, how about a three receiver set with Edwards, Clowney and Cotchery? I didn't agree with the trade when I heard it, but I sure hope I am proven wrong on this one."
Ira Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 3:44pm ET"Jeremy, Under the current CBA Edwards would be a RFA next year. If 2010 is an uncapped year he needs 6 years of playing in the NFL to become a UFA. So as long as he plays well and is not a problem he will be a Jet for awhile we hope. They haven't had a WR his size and with his potential for a long time. J-Co only gets better with Edwards on the field."
Sam Said:
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 3:44pm ET"Question RANDY. Now that Stuckey has been traded, do you think the JETS traded Stuckey because they have **(DAVID CLOWNEY)** and NOW CLOWNEY can get on the field?"

Wed, October 7, 2009 - 4:20pm ET"So as i sum up the Jets and Browns moves this year so far it totals up to the Browns getting Coleman, Elam, Ratliff, Stuckey, Trusnik and 3 picks for a franchise QB as in Sanchez and former potential star WR as in Edwards who are going to be the future of the Jets if things go according to plans. Looks real sweet to me. Randy, Can you remember any two teams making deals like this?"

Wed, October 7, 2009 - 4:44pm ET" Great move by the Jets and Tannenbaum. You're not going to see eight or nine men in the box anymore. Wed, October 7, 2009 - 6:40pm ET"Anybody worried about signing BE next year ought to think of this: The guy just got out of the worst team in the NFL that has the worst coach and the worst near-future. He's now on one of the rising teams in the NFL with maybe one of the best coaches and one of the best near-futures. If you think BE or any other Brown wouldn't like to be on this Jets team for the next few years, think again. "

Whats worst if we can sign him next season what else are we willing to give up>> what if he gets in trouble hurt or he just don't pan out see where I'm going with this .. Lets hope we become NE South & do a R -Moss that would be the best scenario fingers crossed "

Wed, October 7, 2009 - 9:38pm ET"What people are missing is that this guy is a stud with elite skills. He is the all time leading reciever in Big 10 history. He is a monster. The guy had 16 touchdowns two season ago. Very few poeple have that ability. Remember all of the doubters when Moss went to the Pats? Lets hope Braylon can keep his head screwed on. Randy Moss has...so it is possible."
scjoe Said:
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 12:32pm ET"Jet fan since 64....If history has taught us anything, it is that most of these players will simply follow the money. If we do not resign this guy after this season it will go down as one very bad trade, not only the players we gave up, but TWO draft picks! We haven't had our share of those recently to start with."
Ray Said:
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 1:14pm ET"Ira that's great if he is just a RFA but one question. Since the owners opted out of the CBA and next year is uncapped, does that change his status? Is it possible he will be an UFA next year? Maybe Randy can answer that question?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Ray, I don't have specific knowledge of Braylon Edwards' situation. But according to the CBA, in an uncapped year all players who have five or fewer accrued seasons would be restricted free agents, and Edwards is in his fifth season."
Ray Said:
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 4:11pm ET"Ok thanks Randy, I hope that holds true in our case. I guess what I am still unsure about is that if the owners opted out of the CBA, isn't that what they did? Then would that rule still apply. Bottome line, I sure hope so, it makes me feel alot more comfortable knowing if he were to walk after this year that we would still get some kind of compensation."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 4:13pm ET"I don't like giving up picks either, scjoe, but an unproven slot WR, an ST guy, and two picks isn't much for a guy with BE's talent plus he's younger than TO and other guys folks said we should get. Look at it as BE is to MS as Maynard was to Joe, a more experienced deep threat who can help him grow fast. And sure, some guys go for the money but I don't think we'll be giving it to TJ next year."
Row Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 2:23pm ET"Mr. T, I will say one thing. If you think putting great players in Schotty's offense wins games, it's not exactly the case. Someone has to change the way he prepares this O for each game, or we're gonna be the same ol' Jets. One thing's for sure, 4+ years with the team and there hasn't been much improvement, even with Favre! Go Jets"
B. SImon Said:
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 8:24pm ET"As a Browns fan I couldn't be happier about this trade. Stone hands is all yours. It's true he is fast, and can jump high, but he has no idea how to run a route, block, or be a team player. He also drops easily catchable passes, and doesn't know where sidelines are. My condolences Jets fans. "
PChrist Said:
Sat, October 10, 2009 - 8:30pm ET"Look Cleveland fans that nothing but Neg to say about Bray. "Look at your environment." Enough said and besides the big trade off here is we get BE you Mangini. I like our end of the deal better and how many W's have you all got.... L8R"
