10/02 — Rex Ryan announced today that it's back to Plan CB for a second week.
The Jets head coach said at this afternoon's final news conference of the week that cornerbacks Lito Sheppard and Donald Strickland will both miss their second straight game when the Jets take on the Saints in New Orleans on Sunday.
"They're out. They're not going to play this week," Ryan said. "We keep hoping we'll be able to get 'em back, and they're doing a lot better running and things like that. But they're not ready to go 100 percent."
Ryan didn't wait for reporters to ask him the' usual question at such a juncture: "If this was a playoff game, could they go?"
"We probably could play them right now if we had to," he said, "but I don't think it's fair to them. They haven't practiced for two weeks, so that's why we decided to list them as out."
This isn't the news Jets Nation wanted to hear, considering the vaunted reputation of Drew Brees and the Saints offense at moving the ball up and down the field and into the end zone. But Ryan said he was happy with the realignment in his secondary for Tennessee, with Dwight Lowery getting the start for Sheppard at right corner and Drew Coleman coming in for Strickland on the nickel.
And all things considered, Ryan and coordinator Mike Pettine were happy enough not to push GM Mike Tannenbaum to sign one of the veteran CBs they brought in for visits last week in former Raven Corey Ivy and former Jet and Raider Justin Miller.
"We thought about it. We definitely thought about it," the coach said. "But we like our plan with our guys going forward. We do have four safeties, so we can move guys around if we need to."
And the production on the defense's back end has been strong, considering that Sheppard (quad) and Strickland (ankle) both got hurt against New England and have therefore missed roughly the last 1½ games. The Green & White pass defense is ranked fifth in the NFL, first in the league in yards allowed per pass play, and No. 1 in opponents' completion percentage — the Jets are in fact the only team to hold enemy QBs to less than 50 percent accuracy.
One less-heralded measure of a team's pass defense is opponents' passer rating, and despite the missing parts, the Jets still have the second-best passer rating in the NFL. Here are the top four and the opposing passers' stats:
| Team | Pct | TDs | INTs | Rating |
| 1. New York Giants | 53.1 | 2 | 5 | 49.2 |
| 2. JETS | 47.9 | 1 | 4 | 50.2 |
| 3. Denver | 60.0 | 0 | 5 | 50.5 |
| 4. New Orleans | 54.4 | 3 | 7 | 58.0 |
So there's every reason to think the Jets defense can give the Saints offense all they can handle regardless of their current injury status (and all nine other players on the Jets' injury list are going into the game as "probable" and expected to play). As Rex said of the Saints:
"They can beat you running the football. They're second in the league in running, No. 1 in scoring, No. 1 in total offense, so they can throw it. Last year Brees almost broke the all-time record for most yardage. So they pile up yards throwing the ball, they pile it up running the ball.
"But they haven't played us yet, so we'll see what happens. We know they can get yards. We've got to keep 'em out of the end zone."
E.Smith Is an X-Factor
Eric Smith is one of those safeties Rex referenced above, and he is playing and contributing in a whole raft of roles this season.
"The last time I think I played this many positions," Smith told me today, "might've been in high school."
Smith didn't break down all the different roles, which he says changes from game to game, but we know about safety in the base defense and a DB in the dime. And he's also a quasi-linebacker or "X" role in the dime that often lines him up next to Bart Scott and David Harris in a 3-3 look.
The fourth-year man has blitzed from that spot, and he also picked up the fourth interception of his career and his first in the Ryan regime when he followed Chris Johnson out of the backfield and was in perfect position to pick off Kerry Collins' second-quarter throw.
"It was nice," Smith said. "I saw it go over Dwight's hands and dropped right into my hands."
Smitty is one reason the Jets are good to go into New Orleans down two corners.
"Our scheme's a lot of fun," he said. "You don't get put into bad situations. There are no times when you're out there trying to figure out what you're supposed to be doing at the snap. ... Everybody knows what they're doing. There's no confusion going into the game, so at the snap you can play a lot faster and freer."
And Smith likes wearing his multiple hats and being a jack of all trades and a master of all.
"I'm comfortable with it," he said. "I'm just happy to be out there on the field. Whatever they ask me to do, I'm going to do it."

But I would like to see Carroll in mix a little more, and would love to see Clowney on the field as well. I think Clowney running deep routes will do more for the running game then any thing else. If they hit on a couple that would be gravy. Jets 24-20"

Randy, can you do a little research and see if that was ever done before? What makes it even more amazing is it is the first three weeks of the season, and all of the opposing Ds are game planning for a rookie QB right out of the box."
Randy Lange Said:
"scjoe, I don't chart the Pepsi Rookie of the Week award, although I obviously will be the rest of this season. If we hear about any Mark Sanchez distinctions with that or any other honor, we'll pass them on ASAP."

E.Smith is excelling at a fast pace under Rex and I hope we sign him back next year. These players were robots under Mangini, look at the browns.Mangini has turned a bad team worse,no tackling skills, hustle, desire or care in the world to play 4 him"

Fri, October 2, 2009 - 5:08pm ET"Certainly not the news we were looking for, but the fact that E. Smith can fill in and maybe play a rover/spy is a little comforting! Surprised we didn't sign Ivy-Miller not so much, all he can do is return and we don't need a returner w/ Leon & Jim! Lets just hope we get enough pressure on Brees that it wont matter who are DB's are! Concerned that Rhodes & Leonard will be stuck helping deep now!"
Donal Said:
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 5:31pm ET"We hear very little of what role, if any, is played by CBs Ahmad Carroll and Marquice Cole during the absence of Sheppard and Strickland. If they can't contribute at a time like this, why are they on the team?"

Fri, October 2, 2009 - 6:34pm ET"You want to win every game but this one isn't nearly as important as any of the last 8, and Rex wants those two guys healthy for those. I'd also rather see how far Lowery and Coleman can step up now than, say, against NE with the playoffs on the line later in the year, Ivy and Miller will probably still be available in a couple of weeks if things look worse. And more plays for E Smith is a bonus!"
Gary C Said:
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 6:57pm ET"no problem sitting strickland and sheppard this week, conference games more important, no need to have injuries linger.bigger fish later in season, but please do not say a player is close to playing previous week and doesn't even play following week."

One thing that wasn't mentioned anywhere throughout the media was that the Saints are headed into their bye week after the Jets game and then followed with a visit from the NYG. Wonder if the Saints will be looking ahead for the week off and then the NYG? Just a thought. Everybody enjoy and GO JETS!!!!"

Sat, October 3, 2009 - 2:50am ET"Donal: I'd guess the answer is that it's a matter of depth and preference. It's nice to say that there's no dropoff when the next-in-line comes on the field, but the coaches still have their preference. The 3rd string might not be far behind the 1st, but you still play the 2 before you play the 3. Be happy they're 3 deep, cause if someone goes out this week, you still have a good replacement."
Gregg from CA Said:
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 2:54am ET"It's been said here, and I'm sure lots of other places, that the team shouldn't worry about this week because it's not a division game, even to suggestions that they voluntarily rest Jenkins. That said, it makes sense that Rex chooses to give Shep and Strick another week to recover and takes his chances with the subs. Not only that, but you get to see how the team handles the added pressure."

Mangini don't know how to bring the best out in his guys. Hope not but Lowery is going to get in loads of trouble against Brees mark my words.. Rex give Carroll & Ihedgbo time"

Sat, October 3, 2009 - 12:10pm ET"it will be a close game for sure, yet I believe the jets get it done, the jet O will do better against the NO D, and that's the big edge, shotty has got to call a great game and open things up, the run game must contribute and for that to happen the passing game must clear out the box."
Ray Said:
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 1:09pm ET"Rex is handling this exactly right. This is a big game, but in no way a must win. Save those two for another day. These games will be great experience for Lowery and Coleman down the line if they are needed. I won't be surprised to see Carroll and possibly Cole get some time in there too. "

Sat, October 3, 2009 - 1:33pm ET"After listening to the coordinators presser, I have to say that Westhoff is one very impressive guy. Really surprised he has not gotten a HC job yet. Pettine made a great point about following Buffalo on the schedule, first with NE, this week with NO, and next week with Miami. That means when you watch tape of your next opponent you are getting Buffalo each time as an extra bonus. Go Jets!"

Sat, October 3, 2009 - 2:39pm ET"This will be tough game for sure, however we have the best Defense in the N.F.L. Cotchery, Washington, Keller and Sanchez should be at their top game this sunday. I can't wait to scream my lungs off when we beat them in their own Dome......"
MIKE Said:
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 3:07pm ET"This is a big game for the Jets. We have bettin the Pats who have a good balance of run and pass, bettin the Titans who love run the ball and stop the run as well. If we can get a win in New Orleans than that would put the Jets as the #1 team in the AFC next to the Ravens. We will probably see a good mix of blitzes and fake blitzes and look for screen plays to Bush when its 3rd and long."

Sun, October 4, 2009 - 9:56am ET"I realize on teams in the NFL there's a pecking order and rightly so where players are concerned, but this week we should change up somewhat using play makers like Clowney B-smith & let's not 4get we do have some good DB's on the bench , Like we use all our D-players lets get all our O- players involved & change things up use lots of gadgets disrupt the Saints preparation Ball control is key "
Mike Jet vet Said:
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 10:13am ET"CONT. Rex can use J-Ihedgbo like E-Smith hes a big strong fast hard hitter I believe that's why Rex kept him here . Use him as extra linebacker under or over CB or Safety he will thrive in a Rex Ryan Defence like Smith has..Like to see J-Miller play another hidden talent on the roster he has much NFL experience with Lito & Strickland out can be a good fill till they get back lets get to 4-0 today "

Amazing how he has thrived in Rex's system compared to what he did the previous 3 years. He seemd like a robot before now he is all over the field. That shows how good a HC Rex is and his staff are as coaches. They get the best out of their players. This is going to be a good one."
