09/30 — The good news is that Rex Ryan said at today's news conference that injured cornerbacks Lito Sheppard (quad) and Donald Strickland (ankle) are "certainly much better than they were last week."
The bad news is that Sheppard and Strickland were joined by Jim Leonhard (knee) among the five Jets who were held out of today's first practice to get ready for the Saints in New Orleans on Sunday. And Darrelle Revis (hamstring) and Kerry Rhodes (knee) were added to the injury report as limited at practice.
The bottom line as always with the Jets head coach is that he's asking no quarter and giving none.
"With all those DBs on the report, you would think I'd feel nervous, but we're only playing New Orleans, so I'm not worried about having to cover anybody with Drew Brees and company," Ryan said, tongue planted in cheek, of course.
"I'd feel a lot worse if this was Friday and those names were in that order. I feel we'll have guys ready to play this weekend."
As for the prospects of having to saddle up and engage in a shootout in the Superdome, whether due to his secondary injuries or the Saints' 40-points-a-game (so far) offense, Rex's reply was typical of a defensive specialist:
"I'm not comfortable ever in a shootout. That's just something that doesn't enter my mind. Do I have confidence in our offense that we could score and move the ball consistently? I absolutely am. But I would not be comfortable in a so-called shootout. That would be foreign to me."
"As much as I respect the Saints and all that kind of stuff, and we certainly do, I bet you they respect us, too," Ryan added about the road challenge ahead. "We'll see what happens. It's going to be a great challenge for us and it's going to be a great challenge for them."
Game Ball Redistribution
The Rex Rules are the rules, and one rule says that if you get a game ball on Monday for your play on Sunday but then you get a league award on Wednesday, you give the game ball back. Such was the case with Jason Trusnik, who received his second game ball of the season for his special teams play against Tennessee but then was honored earlier today with the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award.
And so "after further review," Ryan and his staff have regifted Trusnik's game ball to ... LB Vernon Gholston.
"I thought Vernon did an outstanding job Sunday. He prevented a touchdown on sheer hustle," Ryan said of Gholston's solo tackle of Tennessee's Chris Johnson 30 yards downfield at the end of a fourth-quarter run that, had No. 50 not been so inclined, was ticketed to become a game-tying 73-yard TD run. Instead the Titans ran three plays and punted and the Jets held their 24-17 lead.
"We talk about the mentality that we want to have here," Gholston told me in the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center locker room after today's practice about that never-give-up play after he was double-teamed to allow Johnson to burst off the left side of the Jets' defense. "When you take the field, that's the attitude. Especially giving up a rushing touchdown that would've been 60 yards or so? You don't want to have that on your defense."
"It's just about getting in here and knowing your plays," he said of his growing comfort level in the Ryan/Mike Pettine scheme. "It's a little different situation from college, but that's always been my story. Once I get comfortable, get adjusted, know what I'm doing, I let my playing abilities take over."
Now Gholston had three solo tackles and has yet to get his first pro regular-season sack, and Ryan distributed about six game balls initially before handing Trusnik's ball off to VG. But the point of these awards are to recognize strong efforts and contributions among the Jets, and Gholston made some of those Sunday.
"He's starting to get it," the coach continued. "If he was a first-round pick this year, we'd all be happy with it, the fans and everybody. We're proud of the way he's playing. We really think he's coming on and that he'll be a major contributor in our plans moving forward."

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 6:23pm ET" It seems as though Thomas Jones at this point is slowing up the ground game. I don't know if it's the contract or defences keying on him more because of his great season last year. Should they trade him now or will he get it going eventually?"

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 7:21pm ET"How many players suit up on game day?"
Randy Lange Said:
"For each regular- and postseason game, an NFL team can suit up 45 players, or 46 players if one is designated a third quarterback."

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 7:22pm ET"I said it earlier: the key to this game is getting Lito & Stickland back. Don't need to worry about Revis-ever, period. But, Lowery has and continues to struggle and we all know he will be severly picked on if he is a starter! Not that worried about TJ's struggles of late, b/c Shotty runs him straight up the middle with a packed box on obvious run downs--it's getting old! "

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 7:22pm ET"Hey Randy, The run game looks real bad right now, i think itr could use some fresh legs, ie; Shon Green Or Danny Woodhead. Rex said that Green had 2 pro bowl running backs ahead of him, that is not true he has 1 aging Jones and 1 pro bowl kick returner its not the same. The last good running was woodhead in preseason!!!! LETS KEEP IT REAL!!! M"

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 7:47pm ET"I have been talking about VG's play since Sunday. VG got no mention in any of the papers and i am happy for him. CJ was gone if not for VG. Wonder if Rex is just pulling a BB and messing with the heads of the Saints or are they really that banged up? Somehow i think all but Strickland will play. Otherwise Ivy would've been signed by now. Bring on those Saints. GO JETS!!!!"

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 8:31pm ET"I think ..Tommy.. if I'm the opposing Def. Coordinator, then I'm gonna stop the run(8 in the box,pro bowl RB's) and let the "rookie" QB try to beat us.A very smart strategy that hasn't worked well,Thank you Schooty & Sanchize!!!"
KevinRobbins Said:
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 8:32pm ET"Greene isn’t going to play if Washington&Jones are both healthy. The Jets keep saying, they have 2 probowlers ahead of him. Jones had a 30 yard run called back last week due to holding on the backside. I still think he is a productive back, but defenses are keying on the run and trying to make Sanchez beat them. The question this week will be can our O score the 28-31 we may need to win this week. "
Row Said:
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 10:12pm ET"Tommy, they are keying in on TJ and Leon (Identical stats with the nod to TJ) because they know Sanchez can't hurt em that much. TJ is not the problem, it's the whole scheme. Schotty needs to come up with an actual game plan. One that has certain plays for certain defensive packages. I think he'll come through this week and we'll start a streak for the SB. NE will lose this week. Go Jets"
Vincent Said:
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 12:56am ET"I admire RR for encouraging VG. RR has made a commitment to make this kid a great player, and he is sticking to it and getting results. VG has the size, strength and athleticism for the NFL, and with the right coaching I think he may well be a very good player very soon. Though, admittedly, I'm eager to see Pace come back ASAP."

Thu, October 1, 2009 - 3:39am ET""He's starting to get it," the coach continued. "If he was a first-round pick this year, we'd all be happy with it, the fans and everybody." Ha ha ha, the coach obviously hasn't been reading these blogs."
Ira Said:
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 7:11am ET"My feelings are Greene will not play until they feel comfortable with his pass blocking, blitz p/u and catching. Otherwise he would have been worked into the rotation already. Hope he catches on soon. They gave up 2 picks to move up to get him and he needs to get onto the field for some plays.Kevin good call. I think 27 pts wins this game this week.GO JETS!!!!"
Ira Said:
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 7:32am ET"While Vilma is the big story being an ex-Jet there is one flying under the radar whi has made a nice career for himself. J. Goodwin was a 5th rd pick by the Jets in 02 and was with the Jets until 05. Now he is NO's starting center. And with Williams being the DC you have ex-Pats and Bills. Hargrove, Greer, and Prioleau all were with the Bills. While Evans and R. Gay were with the Pats."
BriGuyinFL Said:
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 10:47am ET"I am convinced Ira has someone on the inside to get VG a game ball on that play. Either that or Ira is actually a jedi and has used his powers on Rex, "you will give VG a game ball" *Ira waves his hand slowly*. Anyway, gratz VG, hope you have a killer game this week. I hope Bart Scott disfigures Reggie Bush so I have a chance with Kim Kardashian."
scjoe Said:
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 12:32pm ET"I am wondering what is going on with Ahmad Carroll. He is a former #1, he has the speed, he has the size, he seems to have the right attitude, yet he is invisible in the secondary. I'm sure Rex knows something we don't, but to me, especially right now, he seems like a good fit. Of course I would also love to see The Clown get some playing time this week as well."
Damone Said:
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 12:50pm ET"Randy please get he word out that there are a LOT of Saints fans running their mouth abouth our team for absolutely no reason and not that we need any motivation but i think the players would find this interesting...check nfl.com! "

Thu, October 1, 2009 - 2:54pm ET"Did I somehow miss the naming of our captains? Could someone fill me in?"

Thu, October 1, 2009 - 4:33pm ET"Jets WIN with major upset against saints on sunday....i think running the ball will be a tough challenge for the jets but this is the game that sanchez kills them in the air w/ some serious aerial strikes... Cotchery and keller have big games this week!!"
Greenblood Said:
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 9:30pm ET"I think we will get to see this Jets offense open it up vs the Saints. Our D will need as much help as they can get vs Brees and Co."
Hogan Said:
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 11:30am ET"Thanx Randy, I thought I read that but still dont undrstand it. Should you not have solid leaders all the time? Might this create a question as to who the leaders are, and what are the benefits of naming weekly capt.s"
Randy Lange Said:
"Hogan, I've seen it done both ways. From my perspective, I don't think there's any question in the locker room who the Jets' leaders are, and I think Rex Ryan feels that appointing game captains helps reinforce his emphasis on the importance of all individuals in the success of the team."
