File Under: Rex Ryan, Jason Trusnik, Tennessee Titans, AFC Special Teams Player of the Week
09/30 — The Jets' latest NFL award-winner isn't receiving his honor from Pepsi or FedEx but directly from the NFL and didn't play for the team's offense or defense on Sunday against Tennessee.
Jason Trusnik today has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Trusnik, whom we profiled in our Special Teams Saturday Radar entry before the New England game, of course had the fumble force and recovery on Titans returner Ryan Mouton that set the Jets up for their second touchdown of the game. He added another first-quarter tackle on KO coverage, and he again supplied the punt-block pressure up the middle on former Jets punter Reggie Hodges, who had a 30.3-yard net on seven punts.
Several Jets have won Special Teams Player of the Week and Month awards over the years — most recently Leon Washington after last year's Game 10 at New England. But Trusnik is the first Jets specialist who doesn't kick or return kicks to gain this honor since Corwin Brown, who got his recognition in 1997 after Game 4 vs. Oakland.
Head coach Rex Ryan gave Trusnik his second ST game ball of the season this week, but as is his habit, when a player wins a league award, he doesn't get the game ball originally presented to him.
But on Monday the coach praised Trusnik and Larry Izzo for their special contributions vs. the Titans — "Izzo and Trusnik are playing as well on special teams as anybody in this league," he said. And today at the top of his news conference he announced Trusnik's award and said, "We're proud of him."
By the way, Ryan and his staff have now awarded Trusnik's game ball to LB Vernon Gholston. More on that shortly.
We'll bring you more on Trusnik and the Jets as they prepare for New Orleans this week. The team is practicing now and we'll have stories from the locker room and from Ryan's news conference later this afternoon.

Would love to see him get some more playing time with the D, but once again I guess I have to use that P word (politics) That is not to put any other player down, it's just to say I think Trusnik would hold his own in the OLB rotation. Buffalo always seems to get crowned with the best ST unit. I believe it is the Jets, hands down!"

As for VG, he's not setting the world on fire yet but I notice him in and around some big plays as others have said. I saw him apply pressure to Collins and take on more than one man on some plays. I think we'd do well to remember this is really his rookie year -- and with A REAL COACH!"

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 4:31pm ET"We need Sheppard & Strickland back for this game big time! We also need to blitz more than we did vs the Titans we need to rush the QB like the Pats & Texans games. Our D & ST'S have been winning games for us cause all teams are stacking the box to stop the run. I think very soon we are going to have to put more on Sanchez shoulders & live with it. We can beat this team we have to run the ball."

Thu, October 1, 2009 - 4:53pm ET"this has to the best match up thus far in this, still early season. not only is it a match up of undefeated teams but of two coaching systems well known for O and D schemes, I'd have wished the jets beat a healthy NE, the titans were more fulfiling, and now the best matchup, an undefeated NO, time to prove your metal, go jets !!!"

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 1:31pm ET"Well deserved award by Trusnik. Good undrafted signing by the Jets and i think he can even contribute with the D also. Randy, Brown's blocked FG attempt that you mentioned goes down as one of my favorite plays at the Meadowlands. I don't like the Raiders and that was a great win considering what happened the year before on that 96 Sunday Night Game. "
