09/16 — So will any of Rex Ryan’s statements become bulletin board material up in New England? You’ll probably have to wait until next week to find out because Patriots head coach Bill Belichick isn’t saying.

“Whatever is between me and the team I think should stay with me and the team,” Belichick told Newark Star-Ledger reporter Dave Hutchinson during today's conference call with Jets writers.

Let’s just say Belichick was Belichickian this morning. When Hutch led off the interview by asking for the Pats’ coach reaction to Ryan’s statement about not “kissing your rings,” Belichick decided to deliver a scouting report.

“I thought the Jets had a great start to their season down in Houston. They played extremely well — no points on defense and 400 and whatever yards on offense and just really had an impressive performance. My reaction based on that is we have a big challenge this week,” he said.

“They’re coming in for their home opener, playing with a lot of confidence, which they should be. They did a real good job against a good Houston team and a good Houston offense. We’re going to have a lot of work to do here both against their players and the difficult schemes they present, so I hope we can play better against them than the last time.”

Gary Myers, the longtime football columnist for the Daily News, followed up with Belichick but on the ring thing the HC of the NEP expectedly chose to remain off subject.

“My reaction to it is they’re a good football team, they’re playing with a lot of confidence,” he said. “We’ve got a big challenge this week, playing a division game on the road on a short week and we’re going to do our best to be ready to be go down there Sunday.”

Effusive in his praise for Ryan’s club, Belichick says he was impressed with the Jets’ 24-7 triumph in Houston.

“I thought the game last week against the Texans wasn’t very competitive. The Texans couldn’t do much offensively, the Jets threw the ball up and down the field. They ran out the clock in the middle of the third quarter. It was just a strong performance.”

Belichick, a winner of three Super Bowl titles and 106 victories over eight-plus seasons up north, knows a thing or two about good quarterbacks, as Tom Brady has figured into a lot of his professional success. And he has been impressed with Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez.

“I think he’s done a good job, I think he’s managed the team well," the coach said. "I think he’s handled the things at the line of scrimmage. The different audibles, the different check-with-me packages and all that they run — I think he handles those well. He certainly has a live arm, he's an athletic guy, can move the ball around. He’s gotten it to everybody — the receivers, the tight ends, the backs.

“They run him on bootlegs and moving-the-pocket kind of plays. He has been asked to do a lot and it looks like he can handle it. And he has the talent to make all the throws and buy time in the pocket on the rollout plays and things like that, so he’s done a good job.”

Brady, who led the Patriots to a heart-stopping 25-24 comeback win over the Bills on Monday night, and his offensive line will be challenged by the Jets’ “D”. While the Bills rushed four a lot Monday night, the Ryan gameplan will probably feature a lot more movement, overloads and blitzes.

“There are things that change week to week and you can’t really count on anything because you could get what you’ve seen before or you could get something that’s a little bit new or that looks like something like you’ve never seen before,” he said.

Before Belichick hung up, Rich Cimini asked him where he keeps those much-talked-about rings.

“I’m not telling,” answered the unrevealing ball coach.

"I'm not really worried about Moss or the running game of the Pats that much, Welker is so quick he has me a bit nervous, the Pats run so many screen plays and quick outs with Wes that, an aggressive D like the the one the Jets ran sunday can over pursue and get burned for a lot of yards, I'm sure Rex has a lot of schemes to trow at Bill and vice versa, this game is surely a meeting of the minds."

"Being buried on Sunday does send shivers down Pats fans' spines, but it won't be the end of the world to lose an away game to a divisional foe. PAts are still out of sync on offense and D but when it counts late in Dec. and Jan. it will be full speed ahead as usual. And just for the record Happy 30 year anniversary on that long distant memory of a Superbowl! GO PATS!"

"Gotta love Patsy fans!!! "...Happy 30 year anniversary..." I know the Jets won a Superbowl in 1969, but I had no idea they also won one in 1979. Gotta love it!"
