09/10 — Bart Scott was one of the topics of the day for Rex Ryan at today's news conference. Needless to say, the head coach was very expansive on what he expects from his loquacious linebacker when the lights go on the regular season for the Jets at Houston on Sunday.
"I expect him to play lights-out," Rex said. "I expect him to be a physical presence like he always is and to bring that type of mentality to the defense — and he already has. The great thing is I think he feels great about David [Harris] playing right next to him. Those two, that's the Big Two right there in the middle."
How does Rex appreciate Bart? Let him count the ways:
"He's just a guy who's fantastic for the whole unit. He's enthusiastic and I think the whole group feeds off him. He's not a selfish guy at all, just the opposite. He'll do the dirty work, he doesn't mind that. He'll always try to help free a teammate up. He's an excellent teammate."
And then there's the rock-'em-sock-'em quality to Scott's game.
"Just that passion he plays with, that intensity. Bart's one of the most physical players in this league," Ryan said, then chuckled at the mental video of Scott's first game in green in the preseason opener against St. Louis.
"His first play as a Jet I think is funny," said Ryan. "We watched that tape where he knocked that guard out. That just tells you a lot about Bart."
And thinking ahead to the Texans got Rex laughing again, thinking of Bart Scott needing to work his way around 253-pound fullback Vonta Leach to get to RB Steve Slaton.
"This fullback Houston has is a big fullback, one of the most physical fullbacks in the game," he said. "So that's going to be a collision now. That's going to be fun to watch."
Bedtime Story
Rex was asked if he's considered yet what he'll say Saturday night at the team's Houston hotel in his first night-before-the-game talk to his players. He said he hasn't thought about it yet, but whatever he says, it won't be scripted or punched into a TelePrompTer.
"I'd rather just speak from the heart," the coach said. "Am I a fiery guy? I'll give you one guess. I'll speak from the heart and I'll speak the truth. I don't plan anything in advance. I think if I did, it might come off weird and I might miss my message."
More Scott Ahead on Newyorkjets.com
Want to hear from the linebacker himself? Bart Scott will be talking with Eric Allen every week this season on Jets Radio, with the first show scheduled to become available on the site Friday afternoon. EA will have more details but he gave me the green light to give you the heads-up. Make it a weekly habit to listen to Bart on newyorkjets.com.
The I-Reports
Both teams' injury reports remained the same from Wednesday to today. The Jets are still listing Mike DeVito as limited in practice. Ryan said the D-lineman with the sore hamstring "wasn't full-go but he did practice some, so that's encouraging."

Thu, September 10, 2009 - 4:15pm ET"Scott and Harris are a sick duo right there.. Its like you run into one wall then here another wall closes in. Just from that pick when Scott hit Hixon and Harris got a pick in the Giants game. I think we will see alot of that from both guys. I really haven't been this excited as a Jet fan in a long time. Hope they give the Texans hell. J-E-T-S......"

Thu, September 10, 2009 - 4:53pm ET"I think with Scott and Harris behind Jenkins, the inside is very solid, throw in Leonard and Rhodes behind them and I'm not sure any team can match it. Randy, any hint on whether Gholston lines up on the strong side, or switches with BT on the weak side? I think that may work out better. "
Randy Lange Said:
"scjoe, I can't say because in-season media availability is limited to the first 45 minutes of practice, before the ones start working against the scout teams. But Vernon Gholston and Bryan Thomas did line up on both sides during camp and DC Mike Pettine wants the versatility from all his players, so I'd say you could see VG on the strong or weak side, standing or in a three-point stance."
Shep Said:
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 5:08pm ET"Ira, just a quick question. How can we have something for the first time in many, many years that we've never had before? LOL I'm just teasing of course, but I thought that was funny. It is awesome that we have that kind of a player finally. The Singletary, Lawrence Taylor kind of guy that scared the crap out of you with just his glare. Can't wait to see them both take it to Texas on Sunday."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 5:41pm ET"A whole interview with Mr. T. about nothing but Favre? Who cares at this point? Why wasn't this taken up by the league, like, last November, when it was obvious Favre was hurt? Let's get Mr. T back and ask about Leon, TJ, a WR, the punting/holding situation, etc. Re holding: When Romo blew that hold, my first comment wasn't "How could he do that?!" It was "Why is the #1 QB on the team holding?!""

Thu, September 10, 2009 - 6:45pm ET"Ira I have one problem, while I like the idea of a mean & nasty D, & Scott getting all up in peoples grill, I'm worried what type of stupid penalties this new attitude will bring. we already seen it once with Scott. also Ira heard you with Mike Fran on Favre, all I can say is unbelievable. that man has no class, we give him his release, he lies to us, now he snakes us with this arm thing."

Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 7:26pm ET"Wait a minute, I just realized -- what was that remark about "Eric Ainge's work habits in ten years" re Favre? Is that a tip-off that we're holding on to him? Why would Mr. T. care about his work habits on some OTHER team? And how come no mention of KC's work habits thanks to Favre, after KC went out of his way to praise Favre for watching film with him? A hint that KC's not long for the Jets?"
Ira Said:
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 7:41pm ET"The Favre stuff was so unprofessional on his half. Its in the past on everybody has moved on so why bring it up unless you are looking to make excuses. Bad stuff from Favre. Shep if Scott can rip the ball out of jacobs' hand imagine what he will do this season. Can't wait to see this D wreck havoc. Lets keep it real though. They will need some time to all get on the same page. GO JETS!!!!"

Thu, September 10, 2009 - 7:58pm ET"Historically the jets tried to outscore in order to win...I've grown tired of watching our defensive get their manhood handed to them... maybe this year this will be different!"
Gregg from CA Said:
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 8:38pm ET"Hey Shep, did somebody clone me, or were you adopted? I was thinkin' the same thing about what Ira said, but <cough> I was too polite to mention it. <grin> Randy: Not reusing the "apologies to EBB" line this year for "let me count the ways"? I still chuckle about catching you on that one. Yep - loquacious linebacker, some alliterative dictionary delving might be required <wink>. Go! Fight! Win!"
Gregg from CA Said:
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 8:45pm ET"Tom: I was wondering about his choice of reference as well, but more along the lines of "Why does he think it will take 10 years for Ainge to develop good work habits?". I think Mr. T was just grasping for validation at that point, not saying anything of prophetic import."
36 year fan Said:
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 8:50pm ET"Thanks Randy . Great work reporting. Bart Scott is exactly the kind of attitude, and influence the Jets needed. Rex was smart to get him here. Rather than being back on our heels, we'll be concentrating on an attack. Just what the docter ordered . And 64 tom , I'm with ya."
Ira Said:
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 9:28pm ET"MikeMc, No class at all from Favre. Good point about the penalties. Hey you can't have it both ways. Just hope it doesn't come and bite us in at the wrong time. This team needed an attitude adjustment for many years. Rex has finally brought it. Hope he mixes up the blitzes like the Steelers and Titans are so far tonight."

Fri, September 11, 2009 - 7:22am ET"Heinz field is a nightmare for kickers especially the closed end where Brien missed in the 04 playoff game. Bironas not only missed kicking into that end he also had one blocked. Ward going into last nights game had 808 rec and only 9 fum. And ward let Hentrich off the hook with that fumble. Go figure. Now if the Jets play D like either of those teams we will be in for a great season. "
justin Said:
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 8:52am ET"Well its Friday and we still havnt gone for a number 1 receiver!!!! Im tired of listening to this Favre stuff..PLease Mr T make something happen quick..We need a go to guy.. I know were gonna depend on this defense to much this year..and i dont even know if we can do that...The Texans scare me with that offense."

Fri, September 11, 2009 - 1:14pm ET"Gregg and 36 year fan, yeah, I'm still wondering about Mr. T.'s Ainge remark. But I'm not wondering why we haven't picked up a WR in a trade of KC. I think KC could just be let go next year, not even credible for Rex to put him in over EA this year for more than a kneel. Certainly if KC was weak in a game, EA would start the next one. Greg, we need to share tips on bars in CA that show the Jets!"
dnash Said:
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 1:16pm ET"Why did Gholston change numbers? Is it because he thought wearing 56 would bring to many comparisions to LT?"
Randy Lange Said:
"dnash, Vernon Gholston changed from 56 to 50 because it was the number he wore at Ohio State and it became available when Eric Barton left for Cleveland this off-season."

Tom from Bricktown Said:
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 6:15pm ET"Hey Ronnie Ace I HEAR YA , but it makes too much sense to bring in a W.O. now cant wait till we lose LEON TO N.E. in 2010 , then stevie boy can say it's not our policy to redo contracts. 40 and counting years between super bowls is the other policy"
jet fan Said:
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 10:23pm ET"Plz sign LEON! TJ is replacable, there is a good crop coming this year to draft from. Leon is the future, he is our play maker, if we lose Leon i will be very dissapointed. I have been a jet fan every since i was a kid. I dont want to see them hurt themselves again. I seems as though we always start to get things going for us then we shoot ourselves in the foot. Again, plz sign Leon! I BEG!"
Gregg from CA Said:
Sat, September 12, 2009 - 1:00am ET"Tom: Can't help ya with that, I'm in Central CA and haven't found any places nearby that will admit anything but Niners and Raiders allegiance. Odd, though, because the game at Candlestick last year had a definite Green tint to the stands and parking lot, and not all of the jerseys had "4" on them... there were actually quite a few "10"s. It's okay, I have my own big screen and beer!"
Tom Spicer Said:
Sat, September 12, 2009 - 2:57pm ET"Bart Scott blows up the pulling lineman or the full back & aloows the other backer to make plays in the past it was Ray Lewis & now it will be Dave Harris. I predict because of big Jenks needing to be blocked by 2 guys & Scott taking on the guard Harris is going to have hugh numbers tackles wise."
Rick Roucoulet Said:
Sat, September 12, 2009 - 5:02pm ET"JETS FAN SINCE 64, How correct you are - Can we say STATURE OF LIMITATIONS? Hey JETS fans i have an idea, lets NOT mention Favres name for the rest of the season (No need to really) - OK, whoever does from here on out jinx's this team & WE have to call em on it soooo NO MORE FAVRE TALK guys.. J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS"

Sat, September 12, 2009 - 5:49pm ET"I can watch at home, too, Gregg, but I like going out to places sometimes, hear what friends or other folks have to say about the game. Hey, I love the Central Coast, especially around Morro Bay and Pismo. Someday when the timing's right for the drive I should come up there and check out that big screen for a Jets game!"
Gregg from CA Said:
Sun, September 13, 2009 - 1:31am ET"Tom: I hear ya about watching with a crowd, there's nothing quite like it. I'm not on the coast, unfortunately, I'm in Modesto - but you're welcome to visit anytime! If my son gets accepted into the Naval Postgraduate School, he'll be in Monterey next fall and we can meet there. (Randy, please feel free to pass on my email if you can. Thanks!)"
Randy Lange Said:
"Will do."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Sun, September 13, 2009 - 6:54am ET"Thanks for that, Rick! Of course, back in the day in District 26 (Little Neck/Douglaston/Bayside), we'd say it, "How correct are you?," as in "How good is Joe?" "How scary was that pass to Maynard?" "How dirty a team are the Raiders?" Gregg, my main man out here in L.A., who hails from Brooklyn, told me about a great Jets bar in Culver City I never knew about, I'll have to check it out. GO JETS!"

Thu, September 10, 2009 - 4:09pm ET"Randy, I agree with Rex and what he says Scott will bring to the table starting this week. For the first time in many, many years the Jets will have a major nasty attitude on defense which they have never had. And when a player gives up a play Scott will be right in his face and tell him to shake it off. That type of leadership on D is priceless. Scott will takeover this game. GO JETS!!!!!"
