09/01 — The Jets' latest punting derby is still running. Perhaps it will be decided Thursday night when the Jets play the Eagles. While the Green & White starters will play only a series, head coach Rex Ryan and special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff will be patiently waiting all game for a "starting" punter to jump out at them.
"We'll let them both punt," Ryan said this week, "and see what happens."
"Both" are Reggie Hodges and Glenn Pakulak. Pakulak, the fifth punter signed by the Jets this off-season/preseason, didn't kick against the Giants so this may well be a one-game audition for the long-time leg man from Pontiac, Mich.
"We know how it works," Pakulak told newyorkjets.com about this compacted competition. "We're just here trying to do the best we can do. That's all you really can do."
Pakulak thought for a minute late last year that his odyssey around the NFL (which has included stops with Seattle, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Oakland, Tennessee and New Orleans) had come to an end when he averaged 47.7 gross yards and 37.8 net over the Saints' final eight games (coincidentally replacing Ben Graham, who was in between gigs with the Jets and the Super Bowl-bound Cardinals).
But fifth-round pick Thomas Morstead got the nod this summer and Pakulak was sent packing on Aug. 17.
"I waited for so long for that opportunity, and I did good," he said. "Hey, I felt like I did what I needed to do. But everything happens for a reason."
Pakulak and Hodges have crossed paths a few times, when Glenn was a junior at Kentucky and Hodges a Ball State freshman, then again last year in the Oakland-Seattle preseason game.
"Reggie's a great guy," Pakulak said, "a very nice guy."
If this were a nicest-guy competition, Hodges and Pakulak might have to share the award. Both are friendly, religious fellows. But that's not how it works.
Hodges, last year's finishing Jets punter who was released and then was the third punter signed after Eric Wilbur was waived, could've scored an uncontested knockout vs. the Giants. In fact, three of his seven punts were outstanding — his first for a gross of 57 yards with Domenik Hixon being pulled down by Brad Smith at the Giants 10; No. 4, a 49-yarder fair-caught by Mario Manningham, and his sixth, another 49-yard gross swatted out of the end zone by Smith to be downed at the Giants 1.
The other four had the same combined net and gross, 33.8 yards. And so the search continues against the Birds.
In practice today, one of Pakulak's kicks was unofficially timed with a 5.3-second hangtime. Very promising, and not a time that any of the four preceding Jets punters flirted with. But we didn't see the newcomer repeat that kind of boomer, and that's a key for Ryan, who wants to see Ray Guy more often than "a guy" from his punter.
"I thought Reggie had a better day," Ryan said of the Giants game. "The left-footed punter [Pakulak], we’ll see how he does. He’ll get an opportunity this week."
Jenkins on Vick
NT Kris Jenkins probably won't get to put any hits on Philly backup QB Michael Vick, since Jenkins may get only one series and Vick isn't expected to start. But Big Jenk had a few general observations in today's locker room session about the Jets going up against the elusive former Falcon that Eric Allen has just passed on to me.
“I’m looking forward to playing against Vick for two reasons," he said. "When I was in Carolina, we had quite the rivalry when he was in Atlanta. There are still a lot of memories with that.
"But at the same time, it’s going to be good to see him on the field again. I guess I don’t have as hard a heart as most do. If our country has laws and those laws are meant to govern all of us and somebody does something and is punished by government and they have to serve their time, then I think that should be more than enough. As a nation, we should have faith in our system and what it’s about. I think he has his done his time, I think he paid his debt and I think, as a man, he should be able to have a second chance. I think that’s what this nation was built on."
“I’m kind of rooting for him," Jenkins said, "because I hope he does realize he has a second chance and I’m hoping he does prove everybody wrong. I’m hoping he shows everybody what he’s capable of, and I’ve seen him on and off the field and I definitely think he’s a good person. I think he’s going to do the right thing.”
If Vick lines up at wideout, that's a good thing for the 360-pound nose tackle.
"I think the DBs are a little bit more athletically equipped to keep up with him," Jenkins said. "It’s kind of a setup when you put him on the inside with all of these big guys and then you let us go catch him. I love to think I’m a great athlete, but it’s kind of hard to catch him. But it’s cool to see him in the fourth-preseason-game setting because I get to kind of relax and stretch out a little bit because I’ve never got to do that against him.”
“I hope I do get to see him a couple of plays, but I just don’t have to chase him the whole game. I’ve never shied away from the Vick challenge, but after that type of game you’re going to be in the hotel the rest of the night just to get all of the lactic acid out of you. That’s just the type of game it’s going to be.”
Rex Bites
Ryan was asked at today's news conference about Calvin Pace's summer.
"I hope to see him run down Michael Vick a couple of times," Rex said. "I think he's like a gazelle — he can fly. He's in great shape and he just keeps going. He's had a great camp. I think we've all seen that in the preseason games and throughout training camp. He's been a guy who really stands out for us. Unfortunately, we're not going to have him for four games, but when he comes back we expect him to be ready to go. I think he's got a plan in place to stay in shape, work on his timing and make sure there's not much dropoff when he comes back."
Ryan also bemoaned not making like Pat Riley protecting the rights to "Three-peat" in regard to a certain slogan that has come with him from Baltimore to New Jersey.
"We've always had that sense of pride in that room. That's what I'm trying do with this whole football team, having pride in each other and having pride in being a Jet. That's like having pride in playing like a Raven — I should've patented that bad boy. That was me. Play like a Raven, play like a Jet. That means something. It means we care about each other, you're going to get everything we've got. They're not doing it for selfish reasons. When you play us, you're not playing a bunch of individuals. You're playing a team."
And finally Ryan on Mark Sanchez, who wants to play a lot vs. the Eagles but didn't know if he'd play at all Thursday night: "He's going to play a lot in that first series. That's what I see him doing."

I sure wish Rex would have given Pakulak a fair shot in the Giants game, there were opportunities in the game, we all know what Hodges can do. Also, Denver released a punter today, maybe we can take a look at him."

Based on my opinion of our previous coach (and even current staffer Bob Sutton), this year with Rex and Pettine is his rookie year. Based on that criteria, he looks like a talented kid who is learning the LB position. Whoever said out patience will be rewarded was right on. Secondly, how does anyone think MIA will be good? no more weak schedule for fishstix!!"

I think sometimes we forget what he has succinctly reminded us of, that our laws and rules apply to, and work for, everybody. Hate the crime, but forgive the truly repentant criminal when the price has been paid. Is it true repentance? We'll wait and see, but give the man room to prove himself either way. Thanks Kris!"

Wed, September 2, 2009 - 2:22am ET"Okay, I'll start some more trouble: "Defenses may win championships, but QBs win championship games" -- from an article up on the NFL website now. That's not to say I'm not looking forward to seeing our new D hold teams to 10, 7, 0 points. But nobody ever won a Super Bowl with ONLY defense, which is one reason why there haven't been too many Super Bowls with scores like 10-7. That said, go Jets D!"

Wed, September 2, 2009 - 6:03am ET"I like Jay's take on VG. I also think that unless somebody really beats out Hodges, like, ASAP, we'd better stick with him this year, as Ira hints. The holder for the placekicker is one of the most invisible jobs on a pro football team, but one mistake in that department can cost you the whole season."
Ira Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 6:57am ET"Jay, One of the best comments i have read abou VG. It really is like his rooike year. he learned nothing being forced fed to play OLB from being a DE and came into spring camp late because of regualtions with his school. He should've been playing a down DE on passing situations right from the start. Instead of trying to make him learn a complicated 3-4 from the last HC. Go get the QB instead."
Ira Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 7:01am ET"And i think Miami will take a step back. Chad has looked good in preseason but the WC is not going to be has effective has it was last year. Plus they are chomping at the bit to get Henne in there. With their tough schedule and everthing else mentioned i see the Fish at 7-9 or 8-8 at best. Rex showed the rest of the league last year in the playoffs how to beat them."
Coops Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 8:39am ET"Pakulak needs to get his shot this week, because we all know what Hodges can do and too often it's not good enough. Pakulak did well for the Saints last year, even if it was only for 8 games. He's got a heck of a leg and can get good hangtime. He's got a shot. I also think we may see the rookie from Denver or the loser of the Jags' punting competition in Green before this is all said and done."
Shep Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 8:48am ET"I too will have to agree with Ira. There's some chemistry between the holder and the kicker that needs some time to develop. Hodges just looks so weak on some of his punts. URGH!! Also, to '64 Tom, who said that nobody has ever won a Super Bowl with JUST defense. I present to the court as exhibit A Trent Dilfer and the Baltimore Ravens. That team won it all with their D. "

They are going down the drain. In a hot hurry . And good ,they've had a good team for a long time. They are not smart. If the Jets get him that would be smart "
Ira Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 9:39am ET"Tom, The magic number is 17 pts. If they hold teams to that they will win 9-10 games and i think Randy wrote if teams hold other teams to 16 pts their win total goes to 11 games I read that the Jets tried to claim O'Connell off waivers from the Pats. He went to the Lions who also signed Bollinger. Wonder if they want to trade Kellen now and move Ainge to # 2?"

Wed, September 2, 2009 - 9:48am ET"My answer to the comments on V-G he hasn't been given a chance & was put in the wrong situations should have been put into the DE spot seems to me its the same ones who said Clemens wasn't given a fair chance either how that work out.. Hello in this day & age of selfish players & Salary caps you can't affort to wait till a player desides to get off his duff & do his job he has it or he don't "
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 9:57am ET"Ira's on fire today. The Fish squeaked by awful teams last year and were awful against the Ravens. I can't see them much better than 8-8 this year -- and that's IF Chad doesn't get hurt. Shep, yeah, that SB could be the exception and we could list a few more. But if you look at the whole record, even the best D's usually can't stop opponents' O's in the SB and there have been plenty of blowouts."
Mike Jet Vet Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 10:02am ET"Cont. I would like V-G to excell & become a star for my beloved Jets it would be Great the problem is I watched him in a number of games last season & some this preseason & haven't seen any thing more then a muscle bound guy with the lack of talent it takes to be a star in the NFL or he just don't have the heart & desire either way its not good.. Prove me wrong V-G please "
Shep Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 12:14pm ET"PLEASE tell me that this isn't true. ESPN is announcing that we're going after Marshall? If we are, that's sad news. We don't need a trouble maker upsetting the balance of this team right now. The front office hasn't even done a deal with the best player on our team (Leon), but we're going after a big time receiver? Take care of your own house before you go out shopping Mike T and Woody!!!!"
Ray Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 12:40pm ET" A counter point to your post '64 Tom would be the Bears and the Ravens. Both those teams had pedestrian offenses. McMahon might have been a media favorite, but it was the D that carried that team. And Baltimore with Dilfer? There was a time when that D scored more points than the offense. In general your right though. And this D will not be as good as either of those two."

Wed, September 2, 2009 - 2:25pm ET"You guys are the best, I can't get work done today cuz every time I check there's great new posts. Shep, I gotta believe they wouldn't want Marshall unless Rex was ready to read him the riot act, but I still like starting Stuck. Ira, there's no way the Jets want KC #2, O'Connell #3, and EA on the practice squad again -- if I was EA and they did that I'd ask for a trade -- so I think you're right."
Shep Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 3:15pm ET"'64 Tom, I agree. And I'm not saying that it's an impossible thing for a man to overhaul his attitude. Moss did it when he got to the Pats, and I watched Bill Parcells control Bryan Cox when he came to the Jets. I'm not saying that I don't want someone with Marshall's abilities on our team, but not at the cost of our unity. I think Rex could handle him, but we'll have to wait and see."
Shep Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 3:23pm ET"As for what it would take to get Marshall here? Clemens and a pick? Clemens and both our punters? LOL, I think if we do a deal for Marshall, we'd have to make him pinky swear to behave himself. If he doesn't, then we dress him up like a ham sandwich, starve Jenkins for about 20 minutes or so, then turn him loose. LOVE YA JENKS! (man love, Jets love...er...um...quit looking at me like that!)"
Row Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 3:38pm ET"To start, Vick didn't deserve a chance. If I had a feloney, I wouldn't be able to keep my job, sign for millions, or even have a chance at using my degree. I hope someone hits him everytime he gets on the field. As for the punter situation, I don't see a consistent punter on the roster. Hope it changes. Like to keep BS. Marshall is not a troublemaker. He was acquitted of his charges. Go Jets"
Gary C Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 6:39pm ET"Are we that desperate to bring in a rabble rouser like Marshall. I said about one month ago jets should have brought in Matt Jones at the cost of nothing.I still stand by those words."
Row Said:
Fri, September 4, 2009 - 3:02pm ET"Matt Jones is a complete joke of a WR. The Rams brought him for a tryout and they told him to leave after a week. Sorry Gary, but he would be lucky to make someone's practice squad. "

I was actually very impressed with Pakulak during warmups Saturday night. He also seemed to be able to directional punt. Now lets see him do it in a game. Thing is if Pakulak wins the job how about the chemistry with Feely ? Is 1 week enough time?"
