08/31 — In the Routine Excellence Department, Leon Washington had another strong showing in the preseason victory over the Giants. Before it gets lost in the buildup to the Thursday night Meadowlands visit by the Philadelphia Eagles and a certain backup quarterback, we wanted to give Leon kudos for his 174 all-purpose yards on Saturday night.
Since 1990, just five Jets have registered 170 or more APY in a preseason game, and Washington's done it twice in the past two weeks, putting him atop the NFL's preseason combined yardage list heading into the final preseason weekend. Here is the league's top five:
| Player | Team | Rush-Rec-PR-KR | Tot Yds |
| Leon Washington | NYJ | 119-40-0-222 | 381 |
| Josh Cribbs | CLE | 35-81-88-134 | 338 |
| Jeremy Maclin | PHI | 0-123-29-185 | 337 |
| Mike Goodson | CAR | 118-38-0-168 | 324 |
| Samkon Gado | STL | 131-7-0-163 | 301 |
And here is the list of the Jets' top five top yardage games in the past 20 summers:
| Year | Player | Opp | Rush-Rec-PR-KR | Tot Yds |
| 2008 | Jesse Chatman | @ PHI | 93-87-1-0 | 181 |
| 2007 | Chansi Stuckey | @ PHI | 0-47-50-81 | 178 |
| 1998 | Leon Johnson | vs. NYG | 28-9-99-41 | 177 |
| 2009 | Leon Washington | @ BAL | 48-35-0-93 | 176 |
| 2009 | Leon Washington | @ NYG | 62-7-0-105 | 174 |
Speaking of Birds
The Jets have shifted into quick prep mode to prepare for the visit from Philadelphia and backup QB Michael Vick, who's expected to see a lot of action, with practices today and Tuesday at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center.
This is regular-season mode now, so the practices are closed from here on to the public and only the first 40 minutes of both practices are open to the media. Just to prepare you for the shock of the schedule change, we won't be doing full blogs and tweets from practice. We will continue providing reports from the locker room and full coverage of head coach Rex Ryan's news conferences and news alerts. (Rex's news conferences the next two days will begin at 2:50 p.m. and will be streamed live as usual on newyorkjets.com.)
Seats are still available for the Jets-Eagles game. You can go here to purchase tickets or check out availability.
Helping Out a Jets Fan
Ray Wedell just emailed us to tell us of an even bigger Jets fan: his son Scott, 17, who has been battling cancer for 18 months and seems to have things under control. Ray is the captain for the team they're calling the "New York Jets" that is walking in a cancer fundraiser in Reston, Va. If any Jets fans want to pitch in, you can visit Light The Night's Website and search for New York Jets.

Mon, August 31, 2009 - 12:23pm ET"Stuckey was great, but i think it'd be better to have a flat out burner like Clowney in the num 2 slot. In addition to that thought... A message to all Jets fans... Sept 20th home opener vs. the Pats better be the loudest game on the planet!! 12th man!!! No more negative jerks thinkin 8-8 is a blessing! Follow Ryan's positive thinking... 11-5 or better!!!! Let's make it so Brady can't even hear himself think down after down."
Ira Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 12:27pm ET"Well kapinos has won the Packers job. I would bring in Brooks right now. What can you say about Leon? I know thank you Herm! Randy, Was Ian Smart one of those players who recorded 170 or more APY? Nice mention about Scott and his fight. God Bless him."
Randy Lange Said:
"Ira, Ian Smart had that 59-yard punt-return TD at IND in 2004 but he never reached 150 combined yards in a Jets preseason game."
Ira Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 12:32pm ET"MikeMc, I believe that if it weren't for that new CBA coming up it would have ben done already. Leon's deal will get done soon now that Smith signed with the Bengals. They have a deal on the table and it has to be resolved soon. Leon deserves it. He is an amazing player. "
Steve Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 12:43pm ET"MIkeMc, I couldn't agree with you more. Leon deserves to get a new contract."
mark Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 12:54pm ET"Way to waste this enormous talent, Mangini, good job giving him 2 carries a game, this guy can score from anywhere on the field, we need some screen passes with this guy, get him out in the open Come on Schott"
Juan Morales Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 12:55pm ET"Leon is by far the most explosive player on the JETS. He has the ability to turn games around for the team, and has shown it many times last season. As a die hard fan, I cannot see him wearing another team's uniform. He's worth more than what he's asking for. "
Christopher Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 12:58pm ET"MikeMc..I can't agree more. There hasn't been a Jet worthty of getting paid more than Leon. If we lose Leon because of money it will be the saddest day in Jets history. Pay the man already, pay him extra, he deserves it, you gave VG how much? with how much guarenteed? and you won't pay Leon, something is not right. Cut VG and give his money to Leon."
Shep Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 1:05pm ET"It really does confuse me how we can pay guys like VG so much and Leon has to struggle to get a new deal worked. The guy is lightning in a bottle, spontaneous human combustion, electricity unleashed and any other metaphor you want to use. He found/made the holes all night against the G men while Jones couldn't get past the line. Pay this guy and pay him well. Make him never want to leave."
OriginalJetFan Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 1:22pm ET"After seeing him live last friday, if the Jets don't at least split the carries between TJ and Leon, with Shonn worked in occasionally they will be missing the boat. he's Ray Rice with speed, short, strong and more moves than Allied Van lines. a 5'8" 200lb Leon, is as durable as a 5'10", 215 TJ. "
Steve Cip Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 2:16pm ET"I agree about Leon he's the MVP of this team, he can do so much in a lot of different areas. I understand the sticking point of the confusing collective bargaining agreement but still make the guy happy, he's a gamer and they're hard to find. You lose him you lose the team. he plays for the emblem on the helmet and thats what we need !!"
Tom Spicer Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 2:49pm ET"Shep ( The guy is lightning in a bottle, spontaneous human combustion, electricity unleashed and any other metaphor you want to use. ) now that is funny."
JETS 4 LIFE Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 3:12pm ET"Leon should and will be compensated, he is the talent this club can count on play in play out, unlike Jones Leon shows that bust through capability. I have not been impressed with TJ the past 3 weeks he looks slow and he cant move the pile, still waiting on him to show up. speaking of showing up whats up with the ferocious D we have been reading about where are they??medioca at best LETS GO JETS"
Ira Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 3:20pm ET"After watching Leon in the last 2 games you can see he will be more involved in the offense. I would think about 15-18 touches a game is the magic number. Of course thats without KO returns which we hope will be fewer this year. Scotty is really going to get back to running his offense like he likes. Last year too many changes. GO JETS!!!!"
Connie Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 3:22pm ET"Leon is a playmaker, a star, and yet a team player - I sure hope they pay him as he is the key to our offense and special teams - he has paid his dues and the Jets need him! It's people/players like him that deserve to be taken care of."
john Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 3:54pm ET"I've been a loyal Jets fan, practically since birth. The treatment of Leon Washington, the refusal to pay him what he's clearly worth, honestly makes me pause to reconsider this loyalty. That is how severely this attitude by the management is being received by long time fans, and I hope they realize this."
joe b Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 4:01pm ET"I can't believe people are still talking about the great Clowney . He is the most talked about unproductive i reception WR in NFL history. They can put his NFL stats on a pin head. Let's get on with our lives and forget about the Clown. PLEASE. "
Big O Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 4:18pm ET"OriginalJetFan is Leon Washington is our version of Ray Rice, I have both starting on my fantasy squad, They need to pay Leon all that he deserves period!!!!!!!"
Mike S. Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 4:52pm ET"I cannot believe that they still haven't gotten a deal done with Leon. I agree with the people who bring up the point of how much they are paying VG. Leon is by far the most explosive player on our team and I believe that he is capable of being an every-down back(or at least a back that averages 15-20 carries per game). Randy, whats the hold-up on a new deal for Leon? He obviously deserves it."
Frank P. Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 5:00pm ET"MikeMc and Christopher have said it all. Lightening in a bottle is perfect to describe Leon. Please just pay the man and lets win a SUPERBOWL!! If a deal doesn't get done soon to keep this guy in JETS green and white for a LONG time to come, then we have no chance. MIKE TANNENBUAM. IF YOUR READING THIS...GET A DEAL DONE!!! ASAP!!!!"
TonyC Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 5:05pm ET"I've been a die hard Jets fan since I exited the womb. I've followed them through the promising seasons and the dreadful. If we lose Leon, my favorite active Jets player, because of a few pieces of green paper, I may just have to hold a garage sale to unload everything I own with the Jets emblem. Pay the man! Yesterday!"
bamajetguru Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 5:45pm ET"To me, Leon represents everything that is a NewYork Jet..Resilient, determined, humble, productive, exciting , etc. simply put...PAY THE MAN!"
scjoe Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 7:23pm ET"What more can be said about Leon? We all know the player he is, you think for a moment the Jets FO don't know? He will get the contract done as sure as I am sitting here writing. As for Vick and the wildcat? I hope they show it a lot this week, the Jets better be ready for it with Miami. You don't think they selected White in the SECOND round to be a third string QB do you?"
ivan Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 7:45pm ET"Folks please, let us not over react. Sure Leon is irreplaceable and sure the Jets have a history and sure the rest of the League is salivating awaiting the $$number...All that said...Mr Tannenbaum, please OVER REACT. It is more worth it than Favre ever was...Ya Think?!!!"
Nick R Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 7:48pm ET"Leon is a great player and the Jets must sign him to a long term contract-NOW!"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 10:04pm ET"No way the Jets let Leon get away, so stop worrying. Worry about TJ being let go if you want, like JETS 4 LIFE says he hasn't even shown up yet. Or worry about SG's ribs because after him, I don't see much. Brock had a few good moments vs. the Ravens but the announcers couldn't stop talking about other stuff. Like to see what Jehuu can do one of these years. I'm good with Stuck starting, though!"
JETSFAN29 Said:
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 11:56pm ET"DIE HARD JETS FANS HAVE SPOKEN!! WHEN LEON WASHINGTON FIRST CAME TO US CURTIS MARTIN BELIEVED IN THE KID. HE MOST DEFINITELY HAS PROVEN HIMSELF THROUGHOUT THE YEARS AS " THE GO TO GUY" HE ISN'T ONE OF THESE COCKY ARROGANT GUYS RUNNING AROUND DEMANDING BIG BUCKS!! HE DESERVES TO GET PAID!! DON'T LET THIS GUY GET AWAY. PAY HIM!! I HOPE YOU READ THIS MR TANNENBAUM."
Kevin Said:
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 12:32am ET"Leon to me is the embodiment of new york jets football he has the same classy character traits as those of Curtis Martin and Wayne Chrebet. Devoted honest productive and loves his team he deserves to be paid. Gholston finally showed a little promise now lets see Ryan get him motivated and growing better each and every week"
GangGreenFan Said:
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 1:07am ET"I have been a Jets fan for the longest. I currently now moved to the NE area and still remain a proud Jets fan. I even went out bought direct tv to view the Jets game. GET THE DEAL DONE SO THAT I CAN JUSTIFY THE PURCHASE TO MY WIFE !"
Steve from Lindenhurst Said:
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 11:52am ET"Leon is the most exciting player in a long time for the Jets, they will sign him, don't worry. I think If we can get to 2-2, this could be a playoff team with some things breaking out way."
carlos Said:
Tue, September 1, 2009 - 1:30pm ET"Please pay the man! Mr. Leon Washington has nothing more to prove....He does the job on the playing and has honored his contract....Now honor his performance and pay the man......."
Row Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 2:41pm ET"I always liked Leon and will never forget the reception on a screen and the punt return he had to take us to the playoffs with Mangini. Character is superb, this guy you want on your team. I would rather keep Leon for 7 years, sign Marshall for 3, pay him 40 mil, and lose Leon. Whatever we do, sign Leon, and don't give up a #1 pick for Marshall. We can't lose the draft, we need a DE! Go Jets"
Row Said:
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 3:30pm ET"I meant to say I would rather keep Leon for 7 years, than sign Marshall for three, pay him gobs and lose Leon. "
