08/26 — Word is filtering out that rookie Mark Sanchez has been named the Jets’ starting quarterback for opening day, Sunday, Sept. 13, when the Jets open their Rex Ryan era against the Texans at Houston.
ESPN1050 New York and SNY are both reporting today that Ryan met with both quarterbacks this morning and told them that the decision has been made that Sanchez has gotten the starting nod over fourth-year veteran Kellen Clemens.
Sanchez was the fifth overall selection in the April draft. He and Clemens began their quarterback competition shortly after and have been at it into the first two preseason games.
Ryan will talk about his quarterback decision and other Jets matters with reporters after today’s open practice at about 2 p.m. That news conference will be streamed live on newyorkjets.com. Ryan will also be interviewed on ESPN1050 at 5 p.m. today.

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 9:42am ET"There was no good reason to do this. Ryan should have waited until after the Jints game to make the decision. If Sanchez flops again this week it could undermine the team the rest of the year. He was awful this weekend and Clemens out played him not by much but he did. Why the rush? He is definitely no Matt Ryan and there is more risk of long term damage than good doing it this way."

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 9:42am ET"Randy, what effect do you think this will have on Clemens at this point? I imagine he will want to be traded after being deemed #2 once again with the Jets. I think Ainge is also ready to step up into that #2 position. Maybe we could get a WR for Clemens & some draft picks? Pizzotti is back on the roster after all & can probably be the #3."

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 9:58am ET"Stupid move. The guy throws a pick 6, botches a few snaps, gets delay of game calls, forgets how to hand the ball to a RB, and you promote him because you paid him 40+ million and drafted him high.. I see the next Chad when it comes to injury. I think Clemens knew all along that it wasn't going to be him, thought he outplayed Sanchez in preseason though. Upset Jet Fan. Gonna be a long season. "

I would start grooming EA to take the number 2 spot now and part ways with KC. Send him to the Browns to reunite with his clueless leader Mangini. "

Uncomfortable position and looked terrible with a pass rush. Clemens looked more composed and the better of the two. Sanchez needs a lot more time under his belt to make any Jet fan comfortable. Any team out there that saw his lack of composure will blitz him like white on rice."

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 12:27pm ET"OK, good move by Rex and Shott to firm up the QB spot now to get the 1's practicing full time as a unit. I thought Sanchez went into the Raven game with huge butterfly's (to be expected) but he showed the poise and where with all to make plays after the sloppy start. I expected Clemens to be more refined but he made some mistakes that hurt him in the competition. "

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 12:33pm ET"All hell breaks loose! My two cents: Neither of these guys looks great so far. But it's worse for KC because if he was that good, it would've been no contest. Since he didn't blow MS away, Rex has no reason to keep the ball away from the high-priced rookie. Ironically EA looks intriguing but as Ray says, too late for that now. I'd put him in at mid-season before KC, though, if MS can't step it up."
Ira Said:
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 12:37pm ET"Everybody is entitled to their own opinions and i respect that. But this choice was not based just on the ravens game. Sanchez had the upper hand since camp started. Not by much but he did have the better camp. I feel he took the job for good after the Green and White Scrimmage. Will there be growing pains? Of course lets hope not many. He is the future and was the right choice. GO JETS!!!!"
Mike Semple Said:
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 12:42pm ET"What did Rex see in Sanchez that was better than Kellen Clemens? I thought Sanchez looked like a deer seeing headlights! Should have been a second touchdown int. with Ray Lewis. One decent pass to Leon Washington, but otherwise a rookie, plain and simple. I thought we may have a chance at a 500 record this year; but with Sanchez, we will probably be between 4-12 and 6-10. Bad choice! "

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 12:45pm ET"I guess Ryan and the Jets couldnt resist the 50 million reasons to go with Sanchez. This will be the downfall of Ryan has a head coach, he understands defense but has no clue about offense. He has put the trust in OC Shotteinhemer and just think how bad our offense has been with him as the OC over the past 3 years. Looks like a 6-10 season at best."

Good luck Sanchez!"

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 1:12pm ET"It is absolutely the right decision and smart for Ryan to get on with it and get things moving forward. Clemens had to play outside himself to get the job and he didn't. Frazzled or not, Sanchez showed very good instincts at times against a Ravens team fired up to play their old coach. He's a leader. And Ryan is smart enough to know that a good defense and a strong running game is the key."
PurpleFlash Said:
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 1:13pm ET"I think this was the right move. I think that an NFL team has to have a good QB starting AND a good Backup. I think Kellen will fill the back up role. (Not too many years ago, I think the Jets went through 4 or 5 QB's due to injuries). Personally I'd like to see going back to the old Idea of getting your backup playing time (during garbage time etc)> so they are ready when needed. "

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 1:34pm ET"I don't understand why nobody's giving him a chance after the ravens game. Ravens make everybody look "frazzled" and "uncomfortable." They have a pressure defense, and it's called a pressure defense for a reason. Sanchez will be fine. He'll have his O-line back to good health, the defense will have their starters back. Everything will be fine. No need to worry!"

I'm with 80 Fan, though, on moving up EA, grooming CP, and unloading KC soon. KC never fully got his chance here but I'm a lot less worried about what he'll do on another team than I am about what EA might do. IF MS GETS GOOD PASS PROTECTION AND ANOTHER SPEEDY WR, HE'LL DO GREAT. HE CAN PUT THE BALL ON A DIME. I WOULDNT MIND TRADING KC FOR A WR AS LONG AS WE DONT GET RID OF EA! !!HES GONNA BE AMAZING ONE DAY TOO! GO JETS! GOOD JOB REX!"

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 6:15pm ET"hi randy! congatulations mark! we feel very proud about him, we hope mark performs better against giants, i´m sure he´ll do, but i agree with other jets fans, we need more experienced WRS, against ravens we had a very weak offensive. think about it! go jets!!! greetings from mexico!"

Wed, August 26, 2009 - 8:02pm ET"For those of you who don't understand this decision, it was Kellen'sjob to loose and he lost it. He looked very average for a guy who was gonna win the job cause of experience in Schotty's O and the few NFL games he played in. If Jeff Garcia was picked up or someone like that than it would be different but Kellen is not what I called a experienced QB. It's Sanchez's team lets move into a new era."

Thu, August 27, 2009 - 12:38pm ET"Denver has pro bowl WR who wants to be traded & they seem to be in need of a QB, hmmmm Let's make a deal?"

Fri, August 28, 2009 - 4:00am ET"Ok so Kc isnt starting and rex brings in the million doolar kid..... Over rated over payed and is scared out of his mind. Talks big talk but hey KC kept his comments down hes been there MS is dead meat. KC just needs a good O line and we can win. He has a head on his shoulders listen to him speak he is one player who isnt full of himself but willing to help others. "
