08/12 — More than 6,500 fans came out to Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium for a Jets reunion Wednesday evening. Rookie head coach Rex Ryan, son of former Jets assistant Buddy Ryan, led his team through a brisk 90-minute walkout at their former home base.
“This is outstanding for us, to come back here and be where a lot of the fan base of the New York Jets really is. It’s great to come out today and see all the fans. Our players know, we’re doing like a half hour of autographs, so I saw a lot of new haircuts and I saw Kareem Brown run with a ball for 80 yards, so you can tell it was special tonight,” Ryan said while his team mixed with the fans afterward.
Brown, who made the off-season transition from defensive line to tight end, looked like a natural route runner as he hauled in a long strike over the middle from rookie QB Mark Sanchez in 7-on-7 work. With a lot of FieldTurf ahead, Brown didn’t stop running.
“It was a sharp, efficient, short practice," Sanchez said. "That’s exactly the way Coach Ryan wanted it and I got a few completions, offense looked good, defense looked good. It was exactly what we needed.”
While the Jets called Hempstead, N.Y., home until last August, all Sanchez has known in his short professional career has been Florham Park, N.J., and Cortland, N.Y. The talented rook received a lot of New York cheers after he zipped a short ball to Wallace Wright and his favorite camp target got a good chunk of yards after the catch.
“This is pretty special. The veterans told me about it, they just said get ready for an electric atmosphere and that’s exactly what our Jets fans brought,” said the Southern Cal product. “The Green & White looked great tonight. It was just a blast to see all the fans like this.”
Kellen Clemens directed a first-team offense that was less than full strength. C Nick Mangold (knee) and LG Alan Fancea (finger) watched the workout and RT Damien Woody (head) was not on the field. They were replaced in the lineup by Rob Turner, Stanley Daniels and Wayne Hunter respectively and the Jets’ line will be less than full strength Friday evening when New York's AFC representative kicks off the preseason schedule against the St. Louis Rams.
“We have a lot of confidence in those guys,” Clemens said. “I think they shouldn’t miss a beat.”
Ryan has named Clemens the starter for the preseason opener and Sanchez will follow, but neither is likely to play all that much. Erik Ainge will get the bulk of the snaps at the Meadowlands and he could be in early with the Jets being a little banged up.
“I don’t think we’ll go as long with those two [Clemens and Sanchez] as we would have liked to,” Ryan said in reference to the juggled line. “That’s why we did a two-minute here and Ainge was leading the two-minute drill to the second quarter and Harvard [Chris Pizzotti] was leading the fourth quarter. So it did affect our plans a little bit.”
But gray skies didn’t ruin the Jets' return trip to Long Island. The crowd was charged and noisy throughout the workout. It was like old times.
“I’ve been a Jets fan my whole life,” said Joe, a Brooklyn native. “I was really sad to see them go [to Florham Park] but whatever is going to get them to the Super Bowl, whether it’s here or Taiwan — whatever it takes.”
After the 30-minute autograph session officially closed, Leon Washington was still out there signing, posing for photos and talking up a storm.
“This is great, man,” said Washington, a fan favorite. “You can see how it is out here. You can barely leave. Everyone is chanting our names and they miss the Jets so much. I miss Long Island, man. Hopefully, we can make this day an annual event. My first three years I spent there on Long Island and I have love here on Long Island.”
Practice Highlights
Clemens attempted to connect with Jerricho Cotchery on a long heave, but Lito Sheppard displayed his closing speed and came up with a nice PD on a ball that was almost picked.
There were a pair of thefts. Corner Ahmad “Batman” Carroll made a good read on a Pizzotti pass and hauled in his first INT of camp. Then right at the conclusion of practice, Emanuel Cook, an undrafted free agent safety from South Carolina, made a one-handed grab.
The Jets signed K Parker Douglass. A South Dakota State alum, Douglass was in camp with the Browns until July 31. To make room for Douglass, the Jets waived WR Huey Whittaker.
Ryan headed over to Chris Mortensen’s bus for an interview as Mort’s ESPN Tour stopped at Hofstra. We shot a Jets TV piece with Mort earlier this afternoon and he is an incredibly gracious gentleman.
You can put those Thomas Jones trade rumors to rest. “I promise you, that’s ridiculous," Ryan said incredulously. "I’d like to know what we could get for him. Shoot, I’m not going to trade that, you know what I’m all about. This guy is huge in our plans. I’m not going to trade a running back that led the AFC in rushing. I would for three first-round picks and something like that, maybe, but we ain’t dealing him. No way.”

Eric Allen Said:
"Awesome news Tanner. I say keep that ticket stub no matter what happens. This is the first game (albeit a preseason contest) of the Rex Ryan era. Erik Ainge will see most of the work at QB and watch those guys down the depth chart. There are some interesting battles going on down the roster. Have fun."

Wed, August 12, 2009 - 11:54pm ET"I didn't think Leon stayed out there for as long as described, i was waiting for him to come over but to no avail. Tons of players came over and signed, and the most enjoyable to talk to was Feely. All in all for my first camp, I was very happy and enjoyed it, it made the 4 hour trek worth it. Randy did you even see Jones Sanchez or Clemens leave from the VIP signing to do any with the other "

Ira Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 6:52am ET"Good job by the Jets giving back to their original fan base. Hofstra will always be home. But i still recommend fans if possible to get to Cortland. Its very different camp atmosphere and a great town. Read that Stuckey caught all of his 32 passes with 3 WR's on the field last year. While he is the #2 now still see at time Keller lined up wide and Stuckey in the slot. Go with a players strength."
Ira Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 7:13am ET"Nice to see that Cook finally made a play even though it was during a light practice. I thought Cook would show more and he is going to have to get the coaches eyes if he is going to make the PS."

Thu, August 13, 2009 - 7:18am ET"Thiis is a joke. Thanks for the slap in the face Mr. Johnson. Even Rex said it... Long Island is where the FAN BASE of the NYJ are. WOW, even he knows it... but they now practice in NJ, play in NJ, and even reside in NJ. What happened to us? I might as well be a Steelers or Bills fan. Why couldn't they build the facility on Long Island, and share the new Citifield with the Mets? Wake up LI!"
Ira Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 8:28am ET"36 year fan, I am looking forward to watching Ainge. This could be the last time we will see him this season. I know he will play well. Yeah i saw it 2 weeks ago. I can top that. Last Saturday for the afternoon practice i had a Pats fan with a Brady jersey and his father with a Fish shirt [no not Doug's Fish Fries but the Dolphins} and a couple with Bills shirts in front of me."

Thu, August 13, 2009 - 8:43am ET"JimmyCheese, if you remember, the Jets did try to get property over next to MSG, but we lost out to some real estate developers. I would love to have the team in NY as well, but right across the bridge isn't that big a deal. I live in FL now, so it's not like it matters to me really one way or the other. I've been a fan since 1968, and I always will be wherever they play. GO JETS."

Thu, August 13, 2009 - 9:14am ET"I think Fridays game will be nothing more than a scrimmage. Clemens and Sanchez will see one series with a makeshift OL. Ainge & Pizzoti will get all the snaps. Don't put to much emphasis on what happens Friday.. The second group of WRs & TEs will be the players to watch on offense, The backup DBs & LBs will be the defensive players to watch. By the second quarter this will be like a USFL game."
Don Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 9:25am ET"I think they should stay in NY as well..Still disappointed that Albany shot down the stadium in NY..its not all the Jets fault. That being said..I live in PA..so thrilled my ride has been cut in half...I wonder if Wright will get more reps in Live games if Sanchez is the starter?"
Ira Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 9:38am ET"joe b, You're right about watching the 2nd and 3rd team players. I have a lot of interest in the WR's also. Prediction Hunter could be the leading reciever in this game. GO JETS!!!!!"
Tom Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 9:40am ET"True Talk- The people who get VIP access is ridicouls. They jump on every players back while people in the stands cant get nothing. Leon was NOT out there that long. The practice was a joke. Could of watched a JR high practice. I feel like no one can catch a ball. Let me tell you, Rob Turner is a great guy! Couldnt even find jones. Sanchez was with VIPS. 6500 poeple showed up, not in corland tho!"
Eric Allen Said:
"Hey Guys, I just want to clarify a few things. It wasn't a great night weather-wise, but the turnout was great. The Jets have a lot of tremendous support on the Island. I was also with Leon when the (30-minute) autograph session ended, and he was still signing and posing for photos while I was interviewing him. And a lot of fans came on to the field last night and the players/coaches couldn't have been more polite. I know some of these guys had their families out to practice (and they haven't seen them a lot lately) and they still made time for the fans. These guys did what they could in 30 minutes. That's the truth. Bottom line."
Michael Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 10:09am ET"What people have to realize, The Jets may have a lot of history at hofstra, but lets be real, they want there own practice facility near the stadium, they paid through the nose for it. If they wanted to do it in canada they have every right to. The goal for this team is a Super Bowl, not to please absolutely every fan out on long island. I want a super bowl more then just seeing them practice."
Ira Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 10:44am ET"EA is 100 % correct about how the players sign for the fans. I don't know what happened last night but all during camp they have spent plenty of time after practice signing for all fans after they just got done with usually a 2 hour practice and they are tired. I have never seen a player this summer not try to take care of all the fans they could."
Damone Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 10:48am ET"Hey Michael you wanna get really real(lol).I agree with you but lets not forget about the fact that Woody J. is upset with some of the big wigs from NY for not financing that stadium(i would be upset too).Thats another reason why he wanted to get away from NY.The city and state get money from us being a NY team but then they dont wanna support us!! "

Thu, August 13, 2009 - 11:20am ET" the 5 boros have been and will remain a Giants dominated fan base we never get the respect the G-Men get and hopefully Rex Will change that this year. but it never mattered to me I was always a Jets fan growing up as a kid and fighting with my Dad and Uncles (PLAY FIGHTING) BUT THATS WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL.and in alot of cases Miserable, LOL but Damone is right!! but this should be a great season"
Stephen Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 12:01pm ET"ERIC, PLEASE!!!!!......Successful night???.....First the team moves to NJ in 1984, Since then we have gone through 6+ head coaches and have had only 4 playoff wins since.....Now we have to pay for a PSL and last year Woody promised that LI would have the annual green-white game each year and that did not even happen.....Lets not make one non-contact practice out to be more than it is......"
Dom Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 12:50pm ET"IRA - I assume that you are going to the Jets game in New Orleans. My buddies and I will be heading down as well. Do you bring a Jets tailgate on your road trips as well?"
Christopher Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 1:09pm ET"I know Stuckey has been having a nice camp, but I have not heard much about Clowney. I know he was also looking to get that #2 WR spot. Can someone give me an update on Clowney? It is nice to see Wallace Wright getting some recognition as a WR, he has been an outstanding ST player, it would be nice if he could get a few more plays at WR, he sure has earned it."
Oswego Kat Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 1:32pm ET"You can't blame Ryan for wanting to get away from all of the distractions that come with having camp by the city and by the player's families. He is trying to get the team to mesh well, and I think that is happening in Cortland. No matter where the team goes a Jets fan will be a Jets fan. The team is just getting a bigger fan base by expanding to the rest of the state."

Thu, August 13, 2009 - 6:01pm ET"For a team that missed the playoffs the past few years and hasn't even been back to the conference championship game in over 10 years, I think they better slow down real fast about this Super Bowl talk. How in the world can they even use the word Super Bowl in a sentence at this point when they only thing they have proven to us recently is that they are not even a playoff team?"
Anonymous Said:
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 8:18pm ET"He acts way too happy for a 1st year Head Coach. He needs to turn himself into a Parcells and take this job more seriously. This is a team that has failed miserably this decade and disappointed many fans with all their top draft pick busts. I don't know why he would act so happy when he hasn't even won one regular season game yet."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 2:16am ET"Still arguing about the Jets in NJ? Only Dodger-haters in NY can top that! Sure, to someone my age it's never been the same since the move. Parts of the five boroughs may've been Giant turf but in Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk the Giants barely existed until they won a few Super Bowls. And that's the real problem, of course, we haven't won our second yet. I can see us winning one under Rex, though."

Fri, August 14, 2009 - 10:34am ET"been a fan all my life, attended most of training sessions when held regularly at Hofstra, was nice to be back wednesday night. Only downfall was that the only people who benefitted during the autograph session were the ones who had the VIP passes, but I still walked away with Rex's and Dick Vermil, made my day."
Shep Said:
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 12:15pm ET"Facts: Sanchez will be our starter. We need a true #1 receiver so JCo can go back to flanker and Stuckey can play slot, that would be incredible. Our D will be unlike we've seen with the Jets in many years, if ever. Our run game and O line lets Sanchez get comfortable at qb. Gholston either earns his spot this year or he gets shipped. Rex will lead us to the promised land in the next 3 years"
Kevin Said:
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 5:47pm ET"I am ready to see Erik Ainge play some football. It is a joke he hasn't been given any consideration. "
