08/09 — The most noteworthy thing that can be said about this afternoon’s special-teams-only practice, from my vantage point on the fifth floor of the Cortland Stadium pressbox was that the Jets got the practice in.
Storms swept across the central New York hills all afternoon, complete with thunder, lightning and heavy rain. The only stoppage was before the start of the practice. The Jets’ special teamers did about 45 minutes of work on the damp stadium turf, then went inside, and then the hail began.
As for the practice, coaches Mike Westhoff, Kevin O’Dea and Ben Kotwica conducted a mostly half-speed teaching session focusing on covering and returning Jay Feely kickoffs.
The attendances for today’s two sessions weren’t as robust as Saturday’s crowds: 822 in the morning and 441 for the rainy afternoon session.
The Jets have another double session scheduled for Monday (8:20 a.m., 3:55 p.m.), then a morning full-squad practice and another afternoon STO practice Tuesday at Cortland. Then the team travels to Long Island for its Family Night Practice at Hofstra University before Friday’s preseason opener vs. St. Louis. After a dark Saturday, they open their final week of Cortland training camp on Sunday morning.
Eric Allen and I hit the recording equipment hard today, getting interviews with WR Chansi Stuckey, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and OLB Bryan Thomas. The Stuckey Jets Radio show is currently available on our home page and the Pettine and Thomas shows will be available in the week ahead.

Randy Lange Said:
"scjoe, Ropati Pitoitua has looked solid on the line, Kenwin Cummings has applied some crushing hits and Huey Whittaker has come on lately with some good pass-catching practices."

I would love to see him in the wildcat also. I'm pretty sure he blocked a punt in that same game also. The JETS know what they have in stuckey or they would have made the proper arrangements for another reciever, pay close attention.....GO JETS!"

Asked about drops he just doesn't and its been that way since he came to the Jets. Great hands and eye vision for the ball. And i really think that mathis helped him out this offseason along with Ellard. I expect big things out of Stuckey this year."

Mon, August 10, 2009 - 8:11am ET"Kyle, Nice story about Lowery. He is always around the ball and makes plays. I really think bringing in Law last year really didn't upgrade that spot except for the Pats game. Lowery will benefit this summer playing along side of revis and Lito. Like Kyle said he has had a strong camp and i expect him to have a good season and will fit in whatever role Rex puts him in. GO JETS!!!!"

"Darrell, this is the second time you've submitted this comment. You do get the joke? "Fish" as in Doug's Fish Fry?"

Mon, August 10, 2009 - 9:00am ET"Anonymous, I have seen Simmons play since mini-camp and if he continues to play the way he has he is going to make this team as the #3 TE. Brock has nice size and I think he could be a PS player."
Viveca Said:
Mon, August 10, 2009 - 11:20am ET"Watching Lowery last season I was impressed. Of course he made some rookie mistakes, but he showed a lot of promise. Has he gotten any work at saftey in camp? Think that's where he will end up. He'll be a good one! Rex must find a place for him. He's much too talented to ride the bench."
Ira Said:
Mon, August 10, 2009 - 11:55am ET"Viveca, Lowery i thought would play some safety but its crowded back there right now. Kerry,Leonhard,Smith, and Ihedigbo has really improved and will make this team and contribute. Lowery though is the most versatile player being able to play CB, nickel CB and safety. He was another 4th rd pick who will turn into a fine player."
Ray Said:
Mon, August 10, 2009 - 11:58am ET"Very good article on Lowery. It seems he's man enough to say he had a solid season for a rookie 4th rounder, but knows he can do better. He also made a good point. Plays will be made both ways out there. Everytime someone catches a pass against you it doesn't mean you got "burned". Forget it and get ready for the next play. He will be even better this year."
Gary C. Said:
Mon, August 10, 2009 - 1:56pm ET"It continues to see that the jets have a lot of good depth and young talent on this roster. It will help when they go to Houston first game and it is in the 90's and they have to play without Ellis and Pace.Go Jets."
Darrell Said:
Mon, August 10, 2009 - 5:20pm ET"Yeah, I thought you might not see it, as I left it in a column written by Eric. Still, not funny. The patriettes are very annoying right now, but I will always hate the stupid fish first and foremost. "
