08/08 — The Jets turned Mark Sanchez loose at practice Saturday morning and their highly-touted quarterback responded with a sparkling performance while leading the starting offense. And Sanchez didn’t wait long to take advantage of his opportunity on another beautiful morning here in Cortland.
On his first rep in team drills, Sanchez threw a pretty deep ball to Jerricho Cotchery for a 40-yard touchdown. Cornerback Darrelle Revis doesn’t get beat often, but J-Co got a step and the rookie was on the money.
“It was a post route. We wanted to take a couple of shots down the field and Sanchez just threw a great ball,” J-Co told me. “In individual, he was throwing everything on the money so I expected that ball to be on the money. He put in a perfect spot.”
““I put it in a place where only Jerricho could get it and he made a great adjustment for the ball,” added Sanchez. “Obviously, you don’t throw the ball down the field like that without great protection.”
Later in practice, Sanchez didn’t look like a rookie while leading the ones in a two-minute drill. Trailing 13-9, the offense took over the ball at the 45-yard line and 1:42 on the game clock.
Sanchez hit Chansi Stuckey on back-to-back plays for gains of one and then seven. Facing a 3rd-and-one, S Kerry Rhodes jumped offside and gave the offense a free five yards.
Then Sanchez dumped off a screen to Leon Washington and the explosive back picked up 8 before a nice stop by Revis. After Brad Smith’s short reception was ruled out of bounds, Sanchez went to a hot read and delivered a quick strike to Stuckey. Stuck didn’t waste any time and scooted into the end zone for a 25-yard TD.
“Mark did a great job of establishing a tempo. Our tempo was great because he was getting everybody going, getting the plays in and out,” Cotchery said. “He had everyone going and that put a lot of pressure on the defense. He did a great job of leading us today.”
“He’s handling it well and he’s moving the offense,” added Revis, who intercepted Sanchez late this morning. “He’s being a captain, he’s being a leader. He’s out there saying stuff to those guys, ‘Let’s get this first down. Let’s move the ball.’ Things like that to get the offense ready to go and play.”
It was Sanchez’s first full practice with the starting offense and Rex Ryan said that Clemens will be back with the ones this afternoon.
“He did a really good job, made the proper checks, read the defense well,” said TE Dustin Keller. “When there was pressure, he dropped it off to the right man. He did a really good job especially for his first full day with ones.”
(Rex Ryan just announced that Kellen Clemens will start the Jets' first preseason game against the Rams.)
We’ll have a full practice report later…

I also like to hear the WRs and such impressed with MS's skills and overall command. Last night at my favorite Mexican cantina a few of us got into this question of QBs and height - I woulda made Ranger 46 pay for a round of margaritas if he was there!"

Sat, August 8, 2009 - 1:47pm ET"i cannot wait for next week, i believe thats the time when well see whose going to be the quarterback, i feel comfortable with kellen, but most of that is because i havent herd alot about sanchez, mostly because im not at the camp, i wish i could see sanchez play, but now i just have to wait for friday"

Sat, August 8, 2009 - 1:48pm ET"EA,Sanchez really has shown me a lot these past few days. Big difference since last week. He is becoming their leader like Revis said.Stuckey while probably better suited in the slot really looks like he is capable of being a #2 WR. Revis' two INT's were great today.Hunter looked very athletic in WR/TE drills this am. I expect him to catch a pass this year."
Ira Said:
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 1:53pm ET"One advantage Sanchez and Kellen are getting is playing against maybe the best secondary in the NFL everyday in practice. Nothing will surprise either because Rex continues to throw the kitchen sink at both these QB's.I know that a lot of peoples expectations are guarded. As i have said if they can get some consistent QB play and keep the mistakes down this is a winning team.GO JETS!!!!"
Tim Said:
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 2:05pm ET"Just got back from watching the morning practice, and you can already see that Mark is going to be the guy. They are giving Clemens every chance to win the job but he continued to struggle and had another off day throwing multiple ints. "
Jason Said:
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 3:11pm ET"I'm kind of confused. If Sanchez is doing so well, why is it already decided Kellen Clemens will start against the Rams?"
Brad Said:
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 4:00pm ET"I have a very strong feeling that Sanchez will be starting against the Ravens, unless Clemens really shows up against the Rams. Clemens may be a more seasoned QB, but Sanchez has him beat when it comes to natural ability, leadership qualities, and field awareness. If the WR corps keeps making progress, Sanchez may end up having the same kind of rookie success that Flacco and Ryan had last year."

Sat, August 8, 2009 - 4:00pm ET"im pretty much hearing the general consensus as MS leading on arm strengtth ,accuracy and overall athleticism. the most important thing to me is INTs. and from what i keep reading, KC is losing the job because of them. it sucks cuz i think KC is the definition of class yet its his job to lose. i just hope MS is as nice a dude as KC and Chad are. if s, then we're golden"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 4:33pm ET"I think Jeff nailed it, Jason, about keeping both QBs motivated. And as Rex said, it's about MS's performance, not KC's. MS may have all the potential in the world but until the coaches see every day that he'll do a better job over four quarters in all games than KC, he hasn't earned the starting nod. Like what Tim implies, that when it's consistently MS over KC, the decision will make itself."
KleckoistheMan Said:
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 4:37pm ET"Jason, because Kellen has been here four years and that's just the right thing to do. Sanchez is our future, we all know that, but Clemens has to get first shot at it. Don't worry, we didn't move up the draft and give up all we did to watch him ride the pine. And as Ira points out, these 2 are getting to throw against the best backfield in the league. Should be a very interesting year. Go Jets"

Sat, August 8, 2009 - 5:18pm ET"Good point Ira. My comment is this; Remember this has happened before. Trent Dilfer practiced against one of the greatest defenses in The Ravens. What better training is there than going against a top Defense. Remember what happened with Dilfer? He won the Superbowl. Go Jets."

Sun, August 9, 2009 - 9:11am ET"isn't it normaly the back up that is the hero? I think that Sanchez is doing great, it obvious that he is, but we shouldn't expect him to walk onto the field on game day and just fling touchdowns straight away. Clemens may not be the fan favourite, but we still need to take care of our QBs. We don't want Mark burning out too early, as it happens to every roookie. I feel bad for clemens though"
catojetfan Said:
Sun, August 9, 2009 - 10:00am ET"I was at this pratice. It lacked intensity and the quarterbacks did not impress. Sanchez was the best by a thin margin, he got most of the first team reps. Clemens body language looked like he could have cared less. The receivers dropped a lot of passes. Rex Ryan did not seem to be very intense. Brian Schottenhiemer was very active and impressive. This was my only practice."

Sun, August 9, 2009 - 10:49am ET"i wouldn't too anxious to put Sanchez too quickly however he should get at least 1/3 of the snaps. Sometimes it pays off to be cautious at first and kinda let things happen on their own. I'm very confident that Shanchez will come into his own early this season. remember it is unlikely that any team can be truley sucessful with just one competent QB. "
Old Rogue Said:
Sun, August 9, 2009 - 12:52pm ET"I love Mark Sanchez, and the potential he brings to the Offense, but let's all just throttle back a little bit. This was one scrimmage. There is still more than a month (35 days) until the Jets' season kicks off. Lots of practice, coaching and evaluation to be done before that - maybe some new personnel to fit in, also."
John Said:
Mon, August 10, 2009 - 5:54pm ET"I agree with catojetfan.. I was also at Saturday's practice and was not impressed with the team's overall intensity. Seems Rex might be a little to easy going and that worries me. Defensive looked good but the offensive looked out of sync. Let's see how they look at again the Rams on Friday Night."
