File Under: Chad Pennington, Chansi Stuckey, Shaun Ellis, Sean Ryan, Kellen Clemens
08/10 — Much of the Jets' locker room conversation after the preseason-opening 31-16 win over the Falcons was about Kellen Clemens, who joined Rick Mirer (vs. Minnesota, 1999) and Ray Lucas (vs. Giants in 2000) as the only Jets to throw for three touchdowns in a preseason game since 1992.
Eric Allen will have some Clemens quotes in his game story. Here are some quotes about Clemens after his eye-opening performance:
Chad Pennington: "Kellen works extremely hard. He watches everything I do, but at the same time he wants to be his own man. I think he understands what it's going to take to be a good quarterback in this league."
Sean Ryan: "I think Kellen's doing a really good job. He has a lot of confidence, everybody knows his arm strength and obviously he's got a good grasp of the offense."
Chansi Stuckey: "I can see him trying to take more of a leadership role when he's out on the field. He's trying to do the right things, working hard, making decisions and doing a great job of throwing the ball."
And Shaun Ellis for the defense: "Kellen was very encouraging. He looked real good compared to last year at this time. He's made tremendous improvement."
Ryan admitted he almost spiked the ball after his second touchdown reception. "It's a standing thing between me and Chris Baker," he said. "Last year I spiked one of his touchdown catches. After my first touchdown [tonight], he was joking that I didn't even spike my own TD. So after the second one, I faked it, then stopped and handed it to the ref."
DE Michael Haynes got his hand on the third-quarter pass by Atlanta QB D.J. Shockley that deflected into the hands of CB Drew Coleman. And Haynes reported, "It hurt!"
Haynes also had a fresh little spin on the importance of winning games even in the preseason. "It doesn't all of a sudden turn into the regular season," he said. "It's best to play every game like it really matters because that way you get that mentality. That's what Coach [Mangini] always does. He puts us in competition every practice. He reminds us, and it's an ongoing thing and it just becomes second nature — always compete, always try to win."

Their throwing motion is very similar. Clemens even threw a few sidearm passes like Brees. Clemens as a #2 should be fine for now."

Kellen is really blessed to play behind Pennington and learn what it takes from a work ethic and a character leadership role to become a top flight quarterback. This team impresses me a lot!!!!"

Sat, August 11, 2007 - 10:30am ET"Randy..Would you be able to find out how many downs the we actually played the 4-3 last year? I thought Mangini was going to confuse some teams by switching? I hope they find a way to use Vilma better. He gets lost in this D. Nice blocking by Bender on 1st pick J Anderson...The jets can really draft"

Sat, August 11, 2007 - 11:21am ET"I was impressed with the offense T. Jones and L. Washington is going to be one of the top five 2-hit combo in the league. The only thing that scared me was how the D was performing. They had trouble with the run, the pass, and they couldn't get pressure on the QB. I hope they step up b4 game 1."

Yeah its pre-season, but like the article said, you compete hard, try to win EVERYTIME, whether its practice or preseaon or dominos, then you only know how to compete your hardest...THATS Jets Football."

Sat, August 11, 2007 - 3:07pm ET"I love my Jets!!! I like Chad Pennington a lot but I just can't wait to see that Clemens guy take the field. He has a great arm and a lot of accuracy. As for the D, Shaun Ellis and Jonathan Vilma better pump those guys up so we could have a shot at the playoffs."
Ira Said:
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 3:59pm ET"K.Coleman was active and had a nice QB pressure. Glad to see that Eric wanted to get the running game going early. Next week he will probably have Chad pass on their 1st 6 plays. Randy, was that a club record for rushing attempts in a preseason game? 40 attempts is a lot."
Randy Lange Said:
"Ira, the Jets rushed 41 times twice last preseason, at Washington and vs. Philadelphia."

Drew Said:
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 6:09pm ET"I thought Dyson played really well last night. Barrett continues to play off his reciever was too much. He gives up a ton of yrds underneath...Ira that is the Barrett that drives me nuts!!! D Coleman looked very active also. If we only had Revis!!!!"

Sat, August 11, 2007 - 6:22pm ET"I really like Chad ... BUT.... With his noodle arm, the safteys pinch in and ruin our short pass game and our running attack and since he can't throw over the top I just don't think we can win a championship with him. Dont get me wrong he is as smart a player as Peyton Manning He just has no arm"
Ira Said:
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 6:44pm ET"Howard, Good point. I have scene them blitz more in practice than last night. Eric will not show much at all during the preseason games. I guess they will file away that fake punt play. Randy, Thanks i totally forgot. Interesting trend about running the ball 40 plus times in a preseason game."
Ira Said:
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 7:47pm ET"Drew, You not going to see press coverages on WR's in the preseason. Lets wait until the games really start. Dyson did look good. He stayed stride for stride with his coverage on to long balls thrown on his side. He played his receiver very well.GO JETS!!!!!!!!"
TomH Said:
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 10:49pm ET"As a Bolts fan, I hope the Jets really stick it to the Patriots this year. I'm still fuming about last year's gaffe in the first round of the playoffs. If you all had a choice between Philip Rivers and Chad Pennington, who would you rather have on your squad? Bolts4ever!"
Drew Said:
Sun, August 12, 2007 - 8:42am ET"Any real Jets fan would take Pennington... He is the Franchise. Phillips is pretty stout though. Is he that good? or does LT, Gates, and his massive offensive line hide some of his faults? Chad plays in NY and has alot less talent around him"
Colm Said:
Sun, August 12, 2007 - 10:51pm ET"I am huge fan but i never really thought Pennington had the arm to take us to the super bowl. After the game that Clemens had, maybe Chad should be worried about his job. I know it is just pre-season and Atlanta didn't have thier starters in the game but Clemens proved he wanted the starting job."
Ryan Said:
Wed, August 15, 2007 - 12:07pm ET"Pennington may not have that strong of an arm but he is extremely talented especially with the play action pass. Now that we have Jones to make our opponents fear the run it will allow for Chad to use it. Plus he is a good leader and now has the backing to lead the Jets to the Bowl."

And I love how the official behind Ryan, who had no view, overruled the official who did. A testament to Ryan's acting ability. 2. Where was flag girl Gina? The crowd is already picking favorites."
