08/04 — Today’s afternoon practice, as in the morning, was full-squad and it was on the SUNY Cortland grass field. It was a shortie — about an hour and 15 minutes — and it again featured the quarterbacks. Kellen Clemens looked sharp early. Mark Sanchez (with a little help from his friend, Wallace Wright) made some nice throws late.
Clemens had two long balls in particular to note in 11-on-11 drills. His first one was to Chansi Stuckey, a perfect strike down the middle past CB Donald Strickland for a 35-yard gainer.
“The fans and the writers keep talking about the Jets finding a No. 2 receiver and they don’t even know what they have here,” said a knowledgeable observer about Stuckey. “He never drops anything.”
Then Clemens found Brad Smith a few times. The first pass went for 25 yards, the second was a shorter completion in front of CB Darrelle Revis.
Then came Sanchez. The rookie signalcaller, who declared after the morning session, “Wallace Wright — still my guy,” could have said it again after this practice.
The first strike came on a quick throw over the middle that Wright, the third-year man from North Carolina, snatched and then headed north for the end zone.
To end the practice, No. 6 hit No. 15 twice on out-routes. The second one was particularly pretty. Sanchez took off on a rollout right out of the USC playbook, waited for Wright to clear, and rifled the ball to him just past the outstretched hands of S Eric Smith. Wright caught it and got his feet in for the “first down.”
A few defensive plays of note: OLB Calvin Pace, on the inside rush, batted down a Clemens throw in team drills. And CB Marquice Cole was all over a 7-on-7 pass that Erik Ainge was trying to get to Marcus Henry, snatching the ball away from the first-year wideout from Kansas.
The afternoon attendance was 1,194, giving the Jets a Cortland-best one-day total of 2,256.
Wednesday’s schedule calls for an 8:20 a.m. start in the morning and a 4:15 p.m. special-teams-only practice in the afternoon.

"Michael, we didn't see any picks today in team drills."
Ira Said:
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 8:34pm ET"Randy, I think Stuckey was such a steal 2 years ago. If he didn't have that foot injury in college he would have been drafted by the 3rd rd. Stuckey has impressed me since his 1st camp. I would have no problem with him being the #2. The ? is can he stay healthy taking all the reps. If he does end up the #2 i wouldn't be shocked if Wright pushes Smith. Wright has really opened my eyes."
Moshe Said:
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 9:46pm ET"Wow. Clemens seems to be outplaying Sanchez right now. It seems that the decision of whose going to start will depend on how they each play in real preseason action. Hope Stuckey can be a legit No.2 WR. Why didn't we pick up Amani Toomer? That would've helped."

Tue, August 4, 2009 - 10:31pm ET"it seems like every article you wrote about training camp clemens always has 1 or 2 of his passes deflected...plus randy any new info on the jenkins injury???i hope this calf strain dosent linger around all season...we rally dont have a solid backup plan for him"
Randy Lange Said:
"supercool, no news yet today on Kris Jenkins. We will be monitoring Rex Ryan's news conference for that."
Stephen Hoydis Said:
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 10:36pm ET"Looks like Sanchez/Wright is developing that same kind of chemistry that Ratliff/Clowney had last year. I'm soooo excited for preseason. Hopefully this year they'll get to showcase it in a regular season game. I haven't heard anything much about Paul Ramond. Is he not finding a lot of favor with the coaching staff?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Stephen, Paul Raymond has been getting action with the twos. He's had a few drops but also made some long receptions. He's in the scrum with the rest of the WRs here at camp."
Shep Said:
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 11:19pm ET"Moshe, the decision as to who starts at QB was made when we moved up to the #5 spot and gave up all we did to get Sanchez. Unless he plays much worse than Clemens, Sanchez will be starting. Bank on it. You don't leave your 50 million dollar Buggati in the garage and take your Mustang to the race track. "

Ray Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 4:10am ET"Reggie Hodges was running the offense? J/K Randy I know you meant #6."
Randy Lange Said:
"Yes, Ray, I meant No. 6. That will be corrected."
uncle joe Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 6:42am ET"Ira,I'm right with you with Stucky,I always said this kid is good,he just can't stay healthy. He might be better off as a #3 WR to strech him out the whole season. Also Wright looked good in last years camp, these guys never got a shot because Coles would refuse to come off the field and Mangini was afraid to say anything to him!"
Ira Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 7:05am ET"Moshe, If the Jets felt they could use Toomer they would have signed him. Stuckey can easly put up the #'s or top them that Toomer put up last year. 48-580 -4 TD's. Stuckey had 32-359 -3Td's in a limited role. He should be able to double those #'s this year. They will get somebody if they feel the need later on in camp. Thoughts and prayers to Brown to have the strength to deal with his tragedy."
hris Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 7:25am ET"Randy, we havent heard alot about Clowney how does he look?"
Randy Lange Said:
"David Clowney's had some flashes but I haven't seen him have a lights-out practice yet. Maybe this morning."
Gary C Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 8:59am ET"Randy. How are the Nebraska threesome fairing, Potter,Steinkuhler and Slauson.Have they been getting a lot of reps.and how is Brock Christopher making transition from outside linebacker to blocking fullback."
Randy Lange Said:
"Gary C, the Cornhuskers contingent have been working hard under the radar with the twos and threes. Brock Christopher seems to be throwing some nice blocks and getting acclimated at FB. His workload will increase as long as Tony Richardson (hip pointer) is out."
JB Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 9:31am ET"Hey Randy,What do you think about this team taking a look at Michael Vick? I think this guy can be a good fit in the offense running a wildcat package. What's your take on this. "
Randy Lange Said:
"JB, sorry but I have no take on it. I leave personnel decisions up to Mike Tannenbaum and his front office."
Ira Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 10:09am ET"uncle joe, Yes sir Stuckey is the man. You can see it in his step he has an attiutude and is beaming with confidence. I think Kirwan is underestimating the Jets in his NFL.Com story. Once again whoever the QB is if they manage the game and keep the mistakes and turnovers down this is a 9 win team. Too much talent overall not to get there. GO JETS!!!!!"
Moshe Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 11:19am ET"Shep, I agree with what you said, but it doesn't seem like Rex and Schotty do. Seems like if Clemens is better, he'll start the season. Once that happens, as long as he plays at a high level, Sanchez won't get his chance. Would we want a Quinn/Anderson situation? It's an interesting question."
russ Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 11:42am ET"There is no such thing as a "#2 receiver..it is based on teams having two recognizable recvers..old time football...Today the multiple formations and use of spread formations...it is merely who's open gets it and always look to the "Big Guy First"...Radio Twits unfortunately always pretend to more than everybody so the myth continues.."
Damone Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 11:51am ET"In my opinion, i thought Mike Devito looked pretty good last year(from what i saw).Is Devito getting ANY reps with the first team Randy? "
Randy Lange Said:
"Damone, DeVito is entrenched with the twos and he played with the ones today while Shaun Ellis left practice with "a little back thing," according to Coach Ryan."
JETS 4 LIFE Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 12:08pm ET" Jets fans just wondering how M.S looks out there live at the camps,I am hearing that he is not quite there. but hearing also that kellen is having a much more positive camp. and I am glad because I dont want sanchez thrown to the wolves, till he learned how to play the game (pro level) the bar ha been set high with Flacco and Ryan. so to rush sanchez may not be smart what have you guys seen?"
JETFANAL Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 12:33pm ET"Chansi Stuckey deserves his shot, the guy is the real deal and I think Schottenheimer and rest of the organization know it too. We don't need to have big headliners right now. Just wait for the shock and awe when the season starts. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be very surprised by this team."
danML Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 1:14pm ET"it's hard to gauge from sport show highlights, is Sanchez' arm stronger than Clemons. Is he considered the more accurate passer? "

Wed, August 5, 2009 - 1:35pm ET"thanks for the info on dwight lowery. He has a lot of fans on the west coast rootin for him and any info is nice to hear. keep up the good work. I stil think they should give him a chance to really compete with lito.... my opinion"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 6:41pm ET"Agree with Uncle Joe about Coles taking up space last year without major results (and with some big drops) and with Joe and Ira on Stuckey, the guy's always looked ready -- and it's too early to say he's fragile, Joe. I also like Russ' remark on the myth of the #2 WR, outdated now that some formations feature 5 or 6 eligible guys. Plus the two main WRs are rarely similar in skills and style. "
Ray Said:
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 3:01am ET"Yes there very much is a number one and number two and number three receiver. If it's man to man, do you think we're going to put Revis on Moss, Galloway or Welker? If you mean numbers then no there may not be a difference. A #2 could have more catches than a #1. But who is going to get the best DB and probably double coverage? The best receiver."
Ray Said:
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 3:17am ET"Jets 4 Life, I don't know who your hearing that from. I was there last weekend and I can tell you that at that time it seemed very even. Both had their moments and I wouldn't give the edge one way or the other. I was hoping to see Clemens be clearly ahead at this point, but he was very inconsistent. While Sanchez struggled too, I thought he looked good in the short passing game."
taylor corn Said:
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 1:00pm ET"mark sanchez should be the starter with out a doubt because over the past years every time our starting qb got injured kellen clemons came in and messed the whole game up. i will be very upset if clemons starts this season"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 11:10pm ET"I can't speak for Russ, Ray, but I meant there's often no real #1 and #2 in terms of overall impact on the game, at least on a team with more than one good WR. Sure, somebody's gotta cover somebody else but I think it's a bit of a stretch, for example, to say that Coles was the #1 and Cotchery the #2 last year. Heck, on some plays Stuckey and Keller looked as good or better as either of them!"
Ray Said:
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 2:25am ET"'64 Tom, understood. But still much of the time, the #2 receiver has great numbers because the #1 is getting the #1 DB and is many times getting double covered. We're going to find out this year if Cotchery is #1."
