File Under: training camp, Leon Washington

07/31 — This just in: Leon Washington is in uniform and on the Cortland practice field with his Jets teammates.

Washington, the Jets’ Pro Bowl running back and kick returner, didn’t accompany the team to Cortland on Thursday, but head coach Rex Ryan in his remarks to reporters left the impression that No. 29’s arrival might not be far away.

We have no information on Washington’s contract situation, which the Jets front office and Leon’s agent were reported to meeting about.

But Washington is practicing, lining up in the Jets’ backfield and taking snaps and catching passes during early position drills at this morning’s first practice of training camp.

Update: Washington was held out of a lot of drills this morning and head coach Rex Ryan said he'd be limited this afternoon as well. The reason: Washington had to pass his conditioning test this morning, which he did. But as Rex said, "That's a day's work right there."

"Jets want to sign Leon but the NFL Contract expires so Jets like many teams are witing for reneal to resign players...To sign Leon now may cost us many plyers under renewed "Cap" rules...Leon knows this..."

"Shep, if you read this three hours after you read it elsewhere on the Internet, then you didn't go to our Website for three hours after we broke it. We were credited with breaking the story on kffl.com and for getting it up on Twitter by ProFootballTalk.com."

"Leon, your my man, the playmaker, have a great season and you will make your money. I feel bad, you deserve the money, take one for the team now, and we will hook you up. WE owe you, just have another season like you did last year and youll make all the money you want."
