File Under: Buffalo Bills, Dick Jauron, Kawika Mitchell, AFC East
07/10 — This is the latest in a series of nine Radar entries over the next five weeks detailing trends in the AFC East, downward tendencies each division team wants to correct for the coming season and upward strides that each team wants to continue into 2009:
The Buffalo Bills have been knocking on the door for a while but no one's answered. That's the playoff door, of course, and the Bills, despite having competitive teams for most of the new millennium, have missed the AFC postseason grid for nine consecutive seasons. That's equal to the Detroit Lions for the longest current drought in the NFL.
One of the keys to last year's third consecutive 7-9 season under head coach Dick Jauron was the age-old problem of winning, or not winning, in the division. The Bills opened the season 5-1, all against non-division foes, and after Win No. 5 over San Diego, LaDainian Tomlinson said, "They will be a team to be reckoned with late in the season."
But from there the Bills went 2-8, including 0-6 in their AFC East home-and-homes against the Jets, Patriots and Dolphins. It was the first time Buffalo went winless in the division since going 0-8 in 1976.
You could feel the angst in the words of LB Kawika Mitchell after the Bills were stymied, 13-0, by the Patriots in the season finale at Ralph Wilson Stadium for their first home shutout loss in 25 seasons.
“It’s extremely frustrating,” Mitchell said. "In order to get in the playoffs, you have to win in the division, and we lost every game in our division, and we wanted to beat the Patriots this year and it didn’t happen. It’s extremely frustrating.”
And you know Jauron will again be stressing the importance of beating their AFC East brethren. The Bills' first three division games are all on the road: their season opener at New England, Game 4 at Miami and Game 6 at the Meadowlands vs. the Jets.
Here are the eight AFC East teams that have gone winless in their division games since the merger in 1970:
| Year | Team | Div Rec | Overall |
| 1972 | New England | 0-8 | 3-11 |
| 1976 | Buffalo | 0-8 | 2-12 |
| 1981 | New England | 0-8 | 2-14 |
| 1982 | Baltimore Colts | 0-5 | 0-8-1 |
| 1988 | Miami | 0-8 | 6-10 |
| 1996 | JETS | 0-8 | 1-15 |
| 2007 | Miami | 0-6 | 1-15 |
| 2008 | Buffalo | 0-6 | 7-9 |

Fri, July 10, 2009 - 12:31pm ET"Randy, Thats is some list of bad years for those teams. Jauron blew the Jets game last year @ the Meadowlands and he called a horrible game vs the Pats in last years finale. Front page of NFL.Com has a must read about the old AFL. Maynard's story about running his car on butane is classic. With the cost of gas today he had the right idea. Sorry to hear about JJ Jones."

Fri, July 10, 2009 - 4:10pm ET"Both the Jets and Bills are huge question marks this year. They made big splashes in FA and they're relying on young QBs with much to prove. The Bills probably have a few more Question marks, but it is very possible that both these could have very frustrating years: Competitive but come up JUST a little short every week. You can't have weakness at the QB position n win regularly without unreal D."
Ira Said:
Sat, July 11, 2009 - 6:03am ET"Wayne, Edwards is not a question mark. He posted a 65.5 % comp rate which was 6th in the NFL. His yds-per-att was 7.22. He has had trouble staying healthy. This will be his 3rd year starting and i think he could have a breakout year. The Jets will have to depend on Sanchez to pull a Flacco for the Jets to win, Balt finished 28th in passing and still went 11-5. Why not the Jets repeating ?"
Dino Said:
Sat, July 11, 2009 - 4:08pm ET"Ira, I think the Jets can get to 11-5. I'm concerned with a rookie QB and Pace being out for 4 games, but still excited about this defense, and Sanchez will have a great O line with experience together and a great running game. Tough division but really looking forward to an tough and aggressive Jets team this year.I also can see Chad coming back to NY. Maybe not Clemens if he doesn't start."

Sat, July 11, 2009 - 10:09pm ET"Ira, you're right about Edwards, but the beatings he took last year combined with a questionable OL means he could be in for more ot the same. You can beat the talent out of a QB.I hope that doesn't happen to the kid but it's possible. It's for that same reason why Jets have to be deliberate with Sanchez.Invest in blockers and protect him with running until he develops."

Sat, July 11, 2009 - 11:52pm ET"I disagree Ira, Edwards is a joke (at least) vs the Jets, even without Rex. Don't quote me, but I would say he's never beaten us... Edwards, when pushed, is worse then Romo.. Always had a monster back, and still couldn't find a way to win. I think the Bills will surprise everyone and finish at the bottom of the division. I see a Chad repeat with good coaching winning them 9 games."
Ira Said:
Sun, July 12, 2009 - 7:14am ET"Dino, The o-line could be the best in the league. While i feel Schotty would love to run the ball 35-40 times per game it will be tough because everybody will load up the line and dare them to throw. They will have to make teams play them honest with a smart passing game. They will take their shots but expect short and intermediate passes plus a lot of throws to the RB's. GO JETS!!!!!"
Ira Said:
Sun, July 12, 2009 - 7:20am ET"Wayne, Schotty will put Sanchez in the right type of game plans and depending how games unfold he will have the right calls for him. He will make his rookie mistakes but i think he will get better and better the more he plays. They won't do to him what they did with Nagle. He should have sat another year behind O'Brien. Lets not throw Kellen under the bus. He will fight for his job."
Ira Said:
Sun, July 12, 2009 - 7:30am ET"Randy, Nice to see you guys show J-Co some love with the photos on your site. I feel he is the most underrated WR in the league. Since 06 he has avg 78 catches - 983 yds and 4TD's per and thats playing on the other side of LC.And how many times has he made big catch after big catch in important spots. J-Co deserves some credit and respect."

Sun, July 12, 2009 - 7:16pm ET"Ira is right about edwards injuries and i feel the loss of j peters is something the jets Have to exploit. We've always had exciting games vs buff (remember c.b. marcus coleman catching the hail mary). For those who dont think buff is a threat i got 2 words: abram elam - would we have won either of our games vs buff last yr if not for him? Looking forward to this season but it's gonna be tough. "

Mon, July 13, 2009 - 7:01am ET"MikeMc, Thats why i wouldn't ever sign TO. Everything will be great for the 1st 8 weeks if they are winning some games and TO is getting the ball. But once things start to get bad up there and the weather is getting colder TO will become a distraction and start blaming Edwards like he has done with every other QB he has played with. How will Edwards react i don't know. Safe to say not good."
Ira Said:
Mon, July 13, 2009 - 7:14am ET"Row, Edwards' first career start was vs the Jets in 07. The Bills won 17-14 and Edwards tore them up. 22-28-234 yds-1 TD-1 INT. QB rating of 98.5. In 08 his #'s were good 24-35-289 yds-2 TD's. But the Jets applied the heat all day sacking him 5 times and causing 1 FL by Revis and that big INT for a TD by man Elam. So the jury is still out with Edwards' preformances vs the Jets. He missed 2 games also."
Row Said:
Mon, July 13, 2009 - 1:20pm ET"Ira, J-co really lost a step early last season. I know his shoulder was hurting him, but he lost the ability to get seperation. I hope he can return to old form this year. I will NEVER expect the best out of Schotty, he has been the cause of our better teams demise. I can only hope he drops the 5wr sets and starts to use the FB more. Problem is, they ARE daring him to pass this year. Go Jets"
Anthony Said:
Mon, July 13, 2009 - 3:44pm ET"I think the Offense has a lot of potential. Everyone wants a BIG TIME RECIEVED we might have that reciever but we won't know until we test them. I think Cotchery is a dirty. The guy can take a beaten and keep going. And he can catch in the weirdest of situations. Do you forget the Patriot game when he went like completely sideways popped back up and got a td. Don't underestimate what we have"

TO, Evans, Reed and Parrish will be tough to cover. For sure they will use plenty of 4 and 5 WR sets. Their ST are always one of the best. Their D always seems to play well at home. Jauron just seems to get outcoached by his AFC East foes."
