I’d have beat the hell out of that big old joker. Or if he really wants to get retro, my daddy or my uncle could have handled him. Don’t get big. Win with preparation? Wed, June 10, 2009 - 6:41pm ET"Randy, you reported earlier about the lack of punting consistency, but I don't remember that you even mentioned TJ Conley, the rookie. He was a QB at Idaho, correct? Does he have a leg, accuracy?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Rogue, I did a feature on T.J. Conley (along with a separate story on Eric Wilbur) last month, and T.J. will be mentioned again in my Reggie Hodges story that will go live Thursday morning. From my vantage point, T.J. has also mixed some boomers with some bummers, but his hands haven't been an issue and Rex Ryan, Mike Westhoff and Kevin O'Dea may like his upside more."

Wed, June 10, 2009 - 11:59pm ET"Highest paid player in Jets history goes to ? (Sanchez) Are you kidding me? This is ridiculous. Now he is going to be required to play, and he's not the best QB on this team. I can't believe this, the NFL needs to fix the rookie situation. TJ lead the AFC in rushing, and he's making less then almost every starter on the Jets. Mr. T, you need to make a statement, a positive one! go jets"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 4:11am ET"Hey Row, I love your posts, but how do you know Sanchez isn't already looking like the best QB on this team? Ya think maybe the guys who scouted him, drafted him, and signed him, like Rex, might know a few things we don't? Yeah, yeah, I know he's not 6' 5" so he's banished to hell, Ranger46 keeps telling me. Why don't we just see how he does against KC, for whom it's certainly now or never? "
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 4:21am ET"As for money, I think fans have gotten way too caught up in that. Like when you ask people now what they thought of a new movie -- they don't tell you if they liked it or not, they tell you how it did at the box office on its first Friday! There are 32 starting QBs in the NFL and who knows how many guys who've dreamed of being one since age 5, so anyone who gets this far is gonna make big bucks."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 4:36am ET"Finally, as part of a family that had Jet season seats for 25+ years, yeah, I'd like to see lower ticket prices. I'd also like to see lower taxes, lower unemployment, lower budget deficits, and lower prices on everything from gasoline to tequila. So let's not go blaming Sanchez for all the troubles of the world. He got his contract done early, which is more than some high Jets draft picks can say."
HDR Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 5:15am ET"Mr T has done a outstanding Job taking care of this team and he will make LW and TJ very happy once we get the 3 draft picks signed. I agree the NFL needs to fix it's rookie salery process, It's just not fair that someone who has never played a down in the NFL can come in and become the highest paid player on a team. Just doesn't make since and is not fair. Everyone know this."

Thu, June 11, 2009 - 6:44am ET"I said it a while ago,Sanchez needed to be one of the first, round one selections to sign.It makes a HUGE statement.I also believe that Leon was told that they would sign him after Sanchez was done, although they might hold off until they find out what's going on with Burress. They probably will garrentee Thomas' bonus if there is any money left."
uncle joe Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 6:47am ET"Hey Randy, anything on Lowery? Do you know if he is getting any reps at safety? Also,I never hear anything about Marcus Henry,it seemed like he was looking good at the rookie mini camp, has he been doing anything?"
Randy Lange Said:
"uncle joe, Dwight Lowery has made some plays during OTAs and minicamp. I haven't noticed him at S, only at CB. Marcus Henry made a nice reception Wednesday morning and remains in the mix for a WR spot."
Ira Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 7:03am ET"Old Rogue, Randy is right on about Conley right now. I feel the opening day punter isn't on the roster right now. Congrats to Sanchez but he has a way to go. He threw a pick in the pm yesterday. He was mad at himself and just turned his bac kon the play. Kellen wating for his rep jumped in,pushed Sanchez, put on his helmet and stopped the DB from taking the INT to the house."
Ira Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 7:07am ET"What Kellen was doing was teaching Sanchez not to take his head out of the game and practice like its a real game. Great to see Kellen trying to help the kid that will more then likely take his job.And Kellen got that from one guy. Chad who was the ultimate team player. Sanchez will be just fine. Once the speed of the game slows down and he gets the mental part he will be a good one.GO JETS!!!!"
Larry Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 8:54am ET"Great! Now get the deal done with Leon!! This is begining to make me very nervous. A deal of this magnitude for a rookie and let the best all around player on the team,if not the NFL swing in the wind. I dont care what Sanchez did in COLLEGE, hes still unproven in the NFL. Does anybody remember Ryan Leaf. I hope Sanchez becomes everything we expect, but we dont know."
Johnny Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 9:12am ET"The Jets front office is ridiculous....how can you justify signing this un-proven rookie, who is being out played at the present by Kellen Clemens this type of money. Wake up!!!!! We need to sign Leon and Jones immediately.....these two guys are the core of our offense behind that O-Line!!! If they get this wrong, I'm done and not renewing my season tickets....I'm sick of this type of crap!!!!!"
Ira Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 9:17am ET"Please everybody stop worring about Leon. It will get done in time. The guy is their biggest weapon and he is going nowhere. He will be a Jet for a long time and become one of their best all-time players."
Ira Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 9:44am ET"Randy is correct about Henry. He caught everything thrown to him and does have good hands. Pus he is a big target. The one ? mark is his separation speed off the line. Another to keep an eye on this summer is Whittaker. Same size as Henry and i could see him making the PS. Simmons looks like he has the potential to make this team as the #3 TE. We will learn more when camp opens in Cortland."
Doug Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 11:53am ET"Dude you dont even know what your talkng about course we are going to give him this much money we drafted him number 5 over-all to be the face of our franchice THE GUY IS A ROOKE CUT HIM SOME SLACK HE IS LEARNING THE OFFNSE"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 12:35pm ET"Hey Johnny, I'm sure glad YOU'RE not in the front office! First of all, show me a "proven rookie." Second, how do YOU know anybody's outplaying anybody? From a few reports by Randy and Eric? Most ridiculously of all, do you seriously think what the Jets paid Sanchez was based on the last few weeks in camp? Sometimes guys get a big contract at first and then have to back it up over time -- ask TJ."
Larry Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 1:27pm ET"Ira. Youre probably right about the Leon thing. BUT long time fans have seen the front office make some horrific mistakes with personnel over the years and the current management is no exception. I like most everything im seeing with Rex, etc, but there is still a certain amount of mistrust among many of us. I really do envy your optimism."
Old Rogue Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 1:29pm ET"Randy - I read elsewhere that the Sanchez contract DOES NOT include any signing bonus. Isn't that quite unusual? It tells me he is not another get-your-money-upfront glamor-boy, but a serious kid, who wants to get on with playing some serious ball."
Randy Lange Said:
"Rogue, the Jets don't release contract details, as you know, so I can't comment on the terms. In general, no-signing-bonus deals are rare but not unheard of. But I have to defer to my former beatwriter compatriots to fill you in on Mark Sanchez's contract details."
Mike Jet Vet Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 1:41pm ET"Jet Fan 64 ..I wouldn't use T-J as example for contract agreement his was front loaded & now he wants out be4 he honored it.. I believe there should be stipulations in any rookie contract of that size to protect teams especially with cap problems if you don't pan out you get what you give Period ..No underclassmen is worth 50 million untill he proves it then get paid like any other job "
Ira Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 2:27pm ET"Larry, Thanks bt you need to keep the faith. Leon in 3 seasons [reg games] has put together 581 yds PR, 2601 yds KO and 4TD's, 1451 yds rush,13 TD's and 838 yds Rec,2 TD's. Believe me he is staying right here."
Icmoney Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 2:53pm ET"good, now that we got a good looking young qb and a solid o-line, we need to put the effort in to go out and get a wide receiver to help the kid out. hopefully we can pull some strings and get Boldin."
Ray Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 2:57pm ET"The problem is Ranger46 you aren't "explaining" anything. Your just repeating it again and again and again and again and again.... I got your point the first time. I just don't agree with you. And alot of tall qb's who won in college don't make it in the pros. I'll leave it to the coaching staff to decide if he's the best one for the job."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 3:24pm ET"Mike Jet Vet, I'm all for taking a long look at rookie contracts, the salary cap, and every damn thing that drives prices up on tickets as well as mediocre players. But I'm also with Doug on this one -- any QB picked #5 is going to make big $ and it's always been that way. Some folks thought Joe's $427,000 was a bit much, too. And hey Johnny, Sanchez "outplayed" KC today -- should we start him?"
Mike Jet Vet Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 3:28pm ET"Old Rogue. Signing bonus?? 28 million is guaranteed so that ends your glamor boy all business theory. Going to be very interested to hear what all of the MS fans are going to say about the 50million contract & our judgement moving to # 5 to get him if he becomes just another Chad pennington- Clemens- Obrien -Browning Nagel point being give the guys you have a shot then risk the farm why pick em"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 9:01pm ET"Hey Mike Jet Vet, yeah, I'm for giving everybody a chance. I'm glad our WRs are finally getting a chance and I'd STILL like to see Ainge get his chance. But fans can't possibly know what's really going on. No way the Jets make a move like that for MS if KC or anyone else they had looked all that good. And worrying about someone becoming "the next Chad" is as bad as praying for "the next Namath.""
MikeMc Said:
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 9:36am ET"Hey Row get off your soap box, the market dictates the salaries. Your outrage is misplaced, blame the consumers of the product, which is us."
Row Said:
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 8:37pm ET"The problem isn't the dollar figure. I hope he (Sanchez) becomes a great QB, but he didn't fill a need. Notice I didn't mention Sanchez, I was complaining to Mr. T. (and Woody) The cap is what I'm upset about, not one decent FA WR comes in, but we can sign a rookie QB for 50+ mil. (28 guaranteed) We forget about Baker, TJ, Leon who are studs! Lose Elam, Coles, starting DE with no replacements!"
Hogan Said:
Sat, June 13, 2009 - 12:09pm ET"Row, Im not sure what it means but all the papers say Sanchez' money came from as "rookie money pool" and does not affect the cap room for FA's or our vets. Maybe Randy can explain the "rookie pool" thing."
Randy Lange Said:
"Hogan, the rookie pool is the pool within the pool that is a team's salary cap. Each team gets a certain amount of money based on the amount and position of its draft picks and all the picks' contracts must fit within this amount. Obviously, the rookie pool is flexible enough to allow teams to fit in contracts such as those for Mark Sanchez and Matt Stafford and still have enough left over to sign the rest of their picks."
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Sat, June 13, 2009 - 9:13pm ET"Row, I hear your concerns but I don't think it's as bad as that. TJ and Leon will get signed, you have to let the front office do a little card-playing. Or TJ will get traded for someone really good. I have a feeling about three games in Stuckey, Clowney, Smith, and Wright will make everyone forget about Coles. He's nothing like he used to be and I'll take those four guys over him on youth alone."
Row Said:
Wed, June 17, 2009 - 1:25pm ET"While Coles attitude was ridiculous, and he bailed on balls, he did have an amazing ability to get open. Age doesn't exist anymore, because we are talking about professionals. I will guarantee Chad Johnson is 3 times the WR he was last year b/c of Coles as a threat. Stuckey was clutch as a 3rd, Clowney can be a Dante Hall type, but can't play every down. You just have to wander why we let guys go."
Jets Fan Tom Since '64 Said:
Wed, June 17, 2009 - 8:24pm ET"DID have an amazing ability to get open, Row, not anymore. Age exists not only in terms of how the coaches measure it but how we all measure it -- getting hurt more easily. Look at what age did to Chad and is doing to Tomlinson. And I'm not ready to say what Stuckey, Clowney, and our WRs can do till they've had a season to do it in. By that standard, we would've dumped Joe after his second year."
kareem Said:
Thu, June 18, 2009 - 9:07pm ET"hey guys how are you? i have question should we go after plax burris?cuz we need a wide out u know an he can help the jets we should sign him for like a year then we seee how he do with hi case "
Jets Fan Tom Since '64 Said:
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 8:10pm ET"I'm not for going after Plax, Kareem. I don't think a guy at his age and with his record is right for a young team with, far as I can tell, zero headcases. I'm also really for letting Stuckey, Smith, Wright, Clowney, and our other WRs get a year-long shot to show what they can do. I'll admit, though, if we're gonna go after somebody else's WR, Marshall on the Broncos might be a good choice."
Jets Fan Tom Since '64 Said:
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 1:45pm ET"Correction on Marshall: I don't usually hear about players' off-the-field problems unless it's on the front pages in my former home town of NYC, like with Plax. So I only just now read in a Denver newspaper about Marshall's many run-ins with the law and take back my interest in him. We seem to have avoided guys like that and don't need them now. From what I've seen of Rex, I'll bet he agrees."
Row Said:
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 12:36pm ET"If Marshall is available, I would sign him. Plax will never be a threat, and has a guaranteed prison sentence with a suspension. Marshall has nothing, but a few upset whiny teammates that think he doesn't deserve a raise after two straight 100+ receptions and this past year somewhere around 1200 yards. It would be ridiculous not to have that guy on our team IF he is available.. Go Jets"
Jets Fan Since '64 Tom Said:
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 5:44pm ET"Not if he's a headcase, Row. You and I don't have to deal with that but the team does. I like Stuckey's attitude a hell of a lot better than all the stuff I've read about Marshall off the field. That goes double if I'm a first-year head coach with one inexperienced QB and another highly-drafted rookie QB -- and of course a 6' 6" QB who we all know is invincible! (Just messin' with ya, Ranger46!)"
