05/05 — It's almost time to go Taste.
I've been to all seven of the Jets' Taste of the NFL events, the first four because I thought it would be a great opportunity as a newspaper beatwriter to mingle with the players at a unique event, the last three as an employee of the Jets.
This year's event is tonight, so I'll be leaving the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, N.J., in a few hours for the ride to New York and to Cipriani and its the elegant and spacious grand ballroom right on Wall Street — the same venue at which the Jets held their kickoff luncheon last August.
The idea, if you're not aware of the format, is to mingle with current Jets players — this year's list is headed up by three Pro Bowlers, Nick Mangold, Darrelle Revis and Leon Washington — savor exquisite cuisines and fine wines from New York's finest restaurants, and bid on once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
All the while, the participants are teaming up with the Jets and A&P to help fight hunger in the community.
This year's event is sold out, but to give you a flavor of what you can get involved in next May, I'll be sending out tweets all evening on the Jets' Twitter account. See you at Cipriani.
Blowing Away Last Year's Draft
I just wanted to share a few "metrics" from our draft coverage on newyorkjets.com. My intent is not to bore you but rather to show the growing strength of the visitors to our Website and Jets fans in general.
The stats for April 25-27, the two days of the draft plus the wrapup day Monday, blew away last year's Saturday-Monday draft period. This year we had 165,000 unique visitors come to the site, a 26 percent increase over '08. And those visitors registered more than 1.2 million pageviews, a 76 percent increase over the previous draft.
As for our multimedia assets (videos, radio shows, news conferences), they received more than 164,000 views, a 51 percent boost.
As mentioned in the above item on the Taste, Twitter has become a player in our coverage of the Jets for the fans. More than 700 people followed the live draft announcements and news coverage as offered on owner Woody Johnson's account and on the twitter.com/nyjets account that I was sending tweets to all day. We are at 849 followers now and I'm seeking to reach the (Nick Man-)gold standard of 1,000 followers by the end of this week.
One more interesting fact: Our Mark Sanchez introductory news conference on April 26 is the third-most-watched video on newyorkjets.com in the three years since we began tracking our videos. Sanchez moved into third ahead of Brett Favre's introductory news conference on Aug. 7, 2008. First remains head coach Rex Ryan's introductory "presser" on Jan. 21 and second is the Dec. 29, 2008, Johnson/Tannenbaum news conference to announce Eric Mangini's departure.
Finally, a merchandising note: Reebok reports that its Sanchez jersey is the No. 1 NFL seller coming out of the draft, selling better than even Detroit top-pick-of-the-draft Matt Stafford.

Wed, May 6, 2009 - 7:04am ET"Randy, Congrats to you and your staff on NY Jets.Com. Those #'s are great and its a tribute to how well this site is put together and gets the info and stories out to the fans. Keep up the great work. BTW the Browns signed Furrey another WR after drafting two in the 2nd rd. They are getting ready to move Edwards. And the Taste of the NFL last night was one of the best ones they have ever had. "
uncle joe Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 7:13am ET"Hey Ira,how bout Jones and Cotchery for Edwards straight up?Maybe I throw a 5th round pick or conditional pick to seal the deal.I love Cotchery, but he does get his little injuries every year and seems to disapare toward the end of the season, plus Edwards would replace him.No way I get rid of Clowney,TOO MUCH UPSIDE and NO WAY you give up Harris.NO WAY!"
uncle joe Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 9:21am ET"Hey #1dolphinsfan, How many games you think it's gonna take for the Dolphins fans( not Miami fans, cause half of them are Jets Fans)to realize why so many teams passed on Vonte Davis?"
Tom Spicer "I Bleed Green" Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 10:49am ET"#1dolphinsfan, now matter what he will be better than John Beck your second round pick QB that you just cut. Stay off of our site & go back to your bad one."
Damone Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 10:49am ET"How's it going Randy?I'm wondering if you can tell me who is wearing the no.5 pratice jersey. He seems to have pretty good agility and quickness from the video that i've seen."
Randy Lange Said:
"Damone, Kenny O'Neal was wearing No. 5 at the rookie minicamp. He was a Florida State WR who came to the camp as a tryout player."
Ray Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 1:27pm ET"Fish face, apparently it hasn't sunk in for you yet that when you look in the future you see your franchise is in the hands of Chad............HENNE!!! OH MY GOD!!! And your making fun of OUR quarterback???!!!"
Walt Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 3:06pm ET"I for one am not on the Sanchez bandwagon.I thought that we had three very good prospects. We should have concentrated on keeping the trio together. What happens if Clemmins beats out Sanchez in training camp (a very real possibility). Then the the regular season begins and Cemmins sits.Clemmins demands to be traded.I would. You are talking about our second string quarterback. Then who is your backup."
Walt Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 3:16pm ET"I think Jet fans would only be happy with their starting Quarterback if he would grow a Fu Manchu Moustache and he would have to sell a bar he owned because it was frequented by undesirables.Clemmins is not flashy he is just a very good Quarterback.Anyhow it isn't all Quarterback."
Anthony Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 3:29pm ET"Row you are completely right just because he is selling Jerseys he shouldn't start. But been that he has good footwork, great pocket Mechanics and can throw a very catchable and accurate ball makes him that more of a starter. Clemens I feel he should get his shot int his competition but the coaches must see something we don't like he gets happy feet in the pocket which leads to a bad throw..."
Alan Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 4:39pm ET"#1dolphinsfan, I must say you really do have no life, coming to another teams board, to say that Sanchez is going to be a bust. Also, The dolphins had the easiest Schedule last season? They have a hard schedule this season, lets see how well they do. Also jets have more wins in the rivarly, so choke on that? Get a life "
Row Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 6:05pm ET"I really feel Rex was stepped on when these picks were made. There's no way we would go into the draft without a starting DE on the right side. We still haven't addressed our need at TE or WR. It seems management is more set on moving key players because of personal problems. Without Braylen Edwards or a game changing WR, this team will have a hard time running the ball. (Especially w/o a TE!)"
Dublin Jet Niall Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 6:13pm ET"Lads, he's only a poor little fish............you know, one of those pathetic little tiddlers that you throw back in when you catch one. Best to ignore them!!"
Alan Said:
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 9:21pm ET"You know they say that Dolphins, Are some of the smartest mammals, alive, This guy sure makes that statement seem False"

I for one will not wear a Sanchez jersey or any other QB's until we have a ring, my jersey loyalty lies on the other side of the ball with the " D ". Glad to hear Randy is partying with the elite crowd of wall st. snobs, please ask them where all my money went.Good cause though, mailmen will be picking up food donations also."
