04/24 — A heatwave is heading to New York City this weekend and the temperatures will also surely rise inside Radio City Music Hall on Saturday with the commencement of the 2009 NFL Draft. We all know the Jets have found their way into a firestorm of speculation.
On the latest predraft installment of Jets Radio, Randy Lange and I chatted with Merril Hoge, ESPN's NFL analyst. Hoge doesn’t think any quarterback in this year’s crop is destined for greatness and also doesn’t believe it would be wise for the Jets to attempt to move up to select Southern Cal QB Mark Sanchez.
“Sanchez is not special. I think you trade up from where you are for a special guy,” he said. “I think he’s a very good quarterback, he does some good things and I like him, but I don’t even like him in the Top 15, in the Top 20.”
Hoge, a running back who played seven of his eight pro seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1987-93) before finishing his career with the Chicago Bears in 1994, is actually smitten with Connecticut RB Donald Brown.
“He’s powerful enough. I love how he catches the ball, love his willingness to block and his commitment to that,” Hoge told us. “But the thing that probably stood out to me the most is he will play ever down for you as hard as he can play it — even if he doesn’t have the ball. I love that about him.”
The Jets do have a talented tandem at RB in Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, but TJ reportedly is not happy with his contract and the Green & White may be looking to add depth at the position.
If the Jets elect to stay at No. 17, many pundits think the team will choose the best available wide receiver. Both Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree and Missouri’s Jeremy Maclin are expected to be off the board at that point, so New York's AFC representative could be choosing from the likes of Florida’s Percy Harvin, Maryland’s Darrius Heyward-Bey, Rutgers’ Kenny Britt and North Carolina’s Hakeem Nicks.
Hoge views Harvin as more of an athlete than a football player and thinks he’d have to work very hard to make a successful transition to the pros. Regardless of the pick, Hoge says Jets Nation will demand immediate production.
“Whoever gets drafted in the first round, they want him to play. They’re not going to accept him being a package player and that’s one thing the Jets have to be really concerned about," he said. "If they draft Percy Harvin, they can take a lot of heat if he’s not making a lot of plays and touchdowns like he did at Florida.”
Florham Park Receiving Network Attention
ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, who recently penned the book "How Football Explains America," is setting up shop upstairs at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center this afternoon. Sal will provide ESPN with reports throughout day one of the draft. Kara Henderson, a feature reporter for NFL Network’s "Total Access," will also be in attendance throughout the weekend.
We’re attempting to get Sal Pal for a radio segment later this afternoon that will be available to you beginning tonight.

"Sal Pal is in the building, Ira, and we're "efforting" to get him on one final "Jets Two-Minute Drive: Predraft Edition" show. If we do, it'll be on the site tonight."

WE wind up with 6 picks this year & teams like The Pats get players Fred Taylor Randy Moss & again some I can't name at the moment have 11 picks Something is wrong here needs to change "

Fri, April 24, 2009 - 2:54pm ET"I agree with Hoge that none of the top QBs in this draft are "special" So I am hoping the Jets pass on that idea. I also believe none of the RBs are worth a #17. Therefor,at 17, I would like to see either a Boldin trade with Arizona, Tyson Jackson from LSU (DE) or a trade down, then, select one of the RBs. Another option, I know there will be a lot of Jets fans who disagree, Pettigrew (TE)"

Fri, April 24, 2009 - 3:52pm ET"AMEN, We don't need Sanchez. A monkey will be able to run this offense. 4-5 yds and a cloud of dust, but don't forget to mix in the 10-11 yds per catch in the prolific passing game. You can't tell me that any one of the guys on our roster can't do what Brett did last year, 200 yds/game and about 1.5 int's per. You want big names then trade for Quinn and Edwards to help sell those PSL's!!!!"
Joe Said:
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 3:54pm ET"A quarterback this year would just be idiotic. Give Clemens and Ratliff a year and a receiver, and if necessary draft a QB next year from what will most likely be a very deep draft at the position."
Jeff W Said:
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 5:05pm ET"I'm with Hoge, none of the QBs this year would be an upgrade to the young QBs we all ready have. I'm fine with a RB or a pass rushing D-end. If the Jets are going to win this year it will be by running the ball and playing "Raven" defense. "

Fri, April 24, 2009 - 5:44pm ET""May be looking to add depth at the position" (RB), there's an understatement! And another guy who played the game sees how ordinary Sanchez is. (If that's what he said on-air, imagine what he really thinks!) JETACE6, I totally dig the Pitt mention, that's how you build a dynasty. Still don't get why so many folks act like Ainge isn't there but cheer up, Erik, they must've done the same to Cassel."
ksjetfan Said:
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 8:23pm ET"It would probably be smart to trade down towards the bottom of the first round or even top of the second, possibly with Detroit so they could get Freeman. Then take Pettigrew if he is still there (he will be a pro bowler) and a reciever with the other 2nd rd pick, hopefully Kenny Britt if he's available. If you keep the 17 pick I would think you would only do it to take a Maclin or a Moreno."
ksjetfan Said:
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 8:28pm ET"I would be ok with Freeman if they acquired Boldin by trade. Freeman is going to be a good QB, but it will take 2 or 3 years to develop. Take Maclin, Moreno or trade down and get Pettigrew and Britt in the second round."

Sat, April 25, 2009 - 12:51am ET"I say this, trade TJ for a second or third, take Beanie Wells at 17,I think he would be the perfect back for the new "pound the ball" offense. Then try our best to get Boldin, with Boldin, Cotch, and Keller to throw to, and Beanie in the backfield with Washington as a change of pace, I say stick with Kellen, he wont have any choice but to be good with those weapons! "

JetsSinceTitans Said:
Sat, April 25, 2009 - 1:22pm ET"The last thing we need is for Kellen to "do his thing". His thing is a 59.3 QB rating, 5 TDs to 11 INTs and 3-5 as a starter. There is no indication of something special in him. I think we've waited long enough for a QB. Take Sanchez and lets see what he can do. Unfortunately, the existence of this article on this website is likely an indication that the Jets are prepping us for a pass on him"

Fri, April 24, 2009 - 2:01pm ET" according to hoge he feels the JETS should go RB I am OK with that, I do feel though if we are picking a WR at the #1 then we should make moves for Boldin,as he is proven throughout the league! I feel the QB Rumors are tiresome at the least if they go that way I would be Pleased to see Freeman as well as Sanchez."
