04/22 — "Jets Two-Minute Drive" has shifted into draft hyperdrive. My partner, Eric Allen, has been working feverishly to get three Jets Radio segments taped over the last two days onto newyorkjets.com today.
EA and I chatted early this afternoon with Joey Clinkscales, the Jets' vice president of college scouting, and while Joey wasn't going to tell us whose name will be on the card if the team spends the 17th overall pick Saturday, he had great observations on some of the individuals and some of the themes at this year's draft during the 18 minutes he visited with us.
Southern Cal QB Mark Sanchez is not among the nine top candidates who are already in New York City and will be on hand at Radio City Music Hall on Saturday. But Sanchez is one of the players more than a few Green & White followers, Seattle Seahawks fans, quarterback aficionados and NFL draftniks are interested in.
The league made Sanchez available on a conference call this morning and EA recorded the call and cut it up for your online listening pleasure — although "pleasure" is relative in this case because I'm told the quality of the call was not great. But, depending on who you listen to, he'll be the first or second QB taken in this draft and you may want to monitor the five minutes of comments he made on the call, including one response to a question about the Jets' interest.
Finally, we have our Draft Preview Analysis show, with NFL Network draft guru and "guest star" Mike Mayock. Actually, Mayock was not with us in studio or on the line, but we have interspersed our comments on the draft with some of Mayock's on a two-hour conference call he did this week with NFL reporters.
The Mayock piece was a monster to assemble, but EA has slain the beast and that show is now up permanently on newyorkjets.com. The Clinkscales and Sanchez spots will be featured on our home page and on our multimedia page shortly. Enjoy. And we still have a mystery ESPN guest penciled in for a possible Friday morning show.
Half Dozen Jets Will "PLAY 60"
Six current Jets will be participating in the NFL PLAY 60 youth football festival in New York City's Central Park on Thursday and Friday.
The Jets — C Nick Mangold, FB Tony Richardson, WR Wallace Wright, LB Vernon Gholston, OL Robert Turner and WR Marcus Henry — will join with other NFL players, nine of the top candidates in the NFL Draft, and commissioner Roger Goodell in helping to show more than 600 New York City fifth- and sixth-graders how to stay active for 60 minutes a day as part of the league's PLAY 60 youth health and fitness campaign.
Farewell, John Free
Old-time fans and friends of the Super Bowl era New York Jets are noting the passing of John Free, the team's business manager and traveling secretary from 1963-80.
Free, who died Sunday, has a small but significant place in franchise history: He was the first employee hired when Weeb Ewbank took over the football operations of the newly christened Jets in 1963.
"John was one of the special people who worked behind the scenes to help the Jets win Super Bowl III," recalled Bob Parente, the Jets' vice president of broadcasting and production who was hired by Free in 1977. "He'll always be remembered as an original member of the Jets family."
Free's funeral will be in Savannah, Ga., on Saturday, May 2. Our condolences go out to his family.

Other than Favre throwing picks, our pass rush was the worst I've ever seen, and leaves our secondary hung out to dry. The Jets ability to rush the passer is more important than QB, RB, WR, or any other postion of need on this team. Start VG nomatter."

Wed, April 22, 2009 - 7:37pm ET" I think the Jets should either trade up or down for a 5-technique DE (Jackson or Gilbert) or take the best RB at 17 (Wells or Moreno), get some depth on the O line, TE blocker and a WR this year. Lets see what Clemens and Ratliff can do. If they aren't the answer after this year, then next year do whatever is necessary to draft either Bradford, McCoy or Tebow. I'd take any of those three over "

Randy Lange Said:
"Thanks for the props, HoBoops, but I'm in a different store in the journalism mall now. I'd like to take a WR or RB if the Jets stay at 17, but there are arguments for TE and QB, and with Rex Ryan aboard, don't be surprised if the pick is on D. Thu, April 23, 2009 - 11:46am ET"I am all on board with Campbell if this can get done. I think a 4th or a 5th [ if the Jets can get back a 5th] would be a good investment. Competition is good for everybody and Kellen would be pushed by him. Ratty needs more time to develop. What did Campbell do for the Skins? Hand the ball off to Portis and manage the games. He would be good insurance and is still very young. GO JETS!!!!"

Thu, April 23, 2009 - 12:49pm ET"Mike jet vet- I completely agree with you about sanchez. He played one college season. However we need a speed wide receiver such as Harvin or id be perfectly happy with britt. I am so happy that the jets are changing what they usually do, which is pick up other teams has beens. Such as brett favre. Stick with clemens and ratliff, see what they can do."

Thu, April 23, 2009 - 1:12pm ET"Guys I was just wondering what happened to Frank. I guess he is laying low with his tail between his legs until the draft is over he does not want everyone to remind him of how much he was screaming for Gholston & he is a total bust. I said the pick was McFadden & it still is if Gholston can not beat out Thomas this year he is one of the biggest busts in the history of the Jets. "
Steve Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 1:15pm ET"I have this bad feeling that if Josh Freeman is available when the Jets pick, they'll take him. I hope not or any other qb in the first round... I keep hearing how our qb's are inexperienced. What does anyone think a rookie under classman coming out of college is? They are all projects at best, so I hope other needs are addressed such as wr, te, rb, dl, etc. I trust Rex's assessment of KC."
Vincent Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 1:19pm ET"Randy, is it me or has the draft developed more intrigue this year? It seems that teams have always been good at hiding their draft choice, but this year it seems they're doing it much better than normal. Is it that the players in the draft are all graded about the same (no true 'stars') or that the teams are getting better at playing possum to hide gaps in their team? What's your take?"
Randy Lange Said:
"Vincent, you may be right. It seems the same to me because I've gotten used to the secrecy over the years. Yet maybe this draft with the seeming dearth of superstars has added to the intrigue and secrecy. One thing is always true and I'll say it again: Don't believe every draft rumor you hear."
Frank Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 1:39pm ET"Don't you worry Spiceman I am lurking. I have been busy catching fish and dealing with a new daughter, Fia Nicci born in late February. Spicer you are still sulking about McFumble. I also love your selective memory VG was my 4th or 5th option. I suggested trading up for either Long then I added Matt Ryan to the mix. Then I suggested picking Rogers-Cromartie and Ira criticized me for that."
Frank Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 1:44pm ET"Ok Spicer here it is. Picking or god forbid trading up for any other the top 3 QB's would be idiotic none is a franchise player. Let's see what we have with our QB's this year. We are not picking Pettigrew no way we take a TE in first round again. The best pick at 17 is OT, DE or LB I like either Ayers or Oher with this pick we desperately need help on both lines. If neither is there then an ILB."
Frank Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 1:50pm ET"Ira forget wasting any picks on Campbell we need every pick we have since we only have 6. Tanwoody has done a lousy job of not stockpiling picks every year and holding on to players too long and getting nothing in return. There will be a veteran or 2 come the summer we can sign and add to the mix. We need depth everywhere on this team and I would rather draft the players."
Mike Gundy Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 1:57pm ET"What are the chances of getting Ira in to the War Room? Get on it, Randy. "
Ira Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 2:12pm ET"uncle joe, You're too kind. Randy,EA and others are the experts. Pettigrew is the answer to the Jets TE spot. Keller is going to be a great hybrid TE who will avg 55-60 catches a year. But lets be honest his blocking needs a little work. The Jets want to run the ball. Who is their TE then? R.Quinn maybe or Pettigrew. I go with Pettigrew. They can still get Pettigrew and Boldin if they want."
#1dolphinsfan Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 2:45pm ET"uncle joe we may not be so great of drafters either but with the exception of vilma, revis and mangold you guys are bar none the worst 1st rd drafters ever!!!!you guys should trade all your picks for 4th round picks only and maybe you can make the playoffs one of these years!!!"
supercooljetfan Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 2:50pm ET"if the jets pick pettigrew in the first rd i will throw up its definately not worth drafting a te just so we have a blocking te on the team you can get a guy like that in the later rds plus we payin keller enough to go out there and learn how to block"
Kyle Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 3:02pm ET"Frank are you seriously suggesting that we draft an ILB with a first round pick? What is wrong with david harris and bart scott? I agree we need a DE, and im not saying i love any of the QB choices. Im more than willing to give Clemens a shot but he's going to need some help and its going to take more than J-co, brad smith, and chansi stuckey. We need a player who is going to stretch the field "
bigpete Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 3:29pm ET"We are all guessing and hoping for the JETS to draft certain people. my only wish is that they dont trade up to get sanchez, the guy's arm get weaker everytime i watch his highlights. i like the campbell move also. most of all i like our team and im comfortable with taking the best player on the board with all our picks. im actually starting to warm up to freeman, but id love to just take moreno"
Joe Willie Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 3:58pm ET"Frank, I've been lurking as well. The blather is unbearable. Not one of them understands that championships are won in the trenches. The Giants clearly exhibited what a fierce D-line will accomplish (even to an HOF QB). Now look at ours. Skill positions do not win super bowls in the absence great D line, O line and LB play"
Mike Jet Vet Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 4:58pm ET"I agree with willie Joe Offence fills seats defence wins championships. .But fear not Willie Joe & Frank I believe Rex has that handled already ..Thats the reason he addressed it with proven FA's on Defence before the season starts ..I wouldn't be mad about getting a big time pass rusher believe that but let's see if Ellis wakes up with this Coach ..Our need is really on the Offence we shall see "
Frank Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 6:26pm ET"Joe Willie...AMEN. Unfortunately the lunacy prevails in management as well as they just don't get it either. Kyle if Ayers or Oher are not there at 17 and Laurenaitis is you wouldn't pick him? Last year he was a surefire top 5 pick. Harris was hurt all last year and his production dropped off significantly. We have no idea what he brings to the table this year. I hate Woody at OT and we need depth"
Bobby N Said:
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 6:30pm ET"Personally, I would much rather see the Jets trade their first pick in order to get Boldin then I would see them trade up for Sanchez. I think Clemens will perform well with a good O-Line and if he gets a guy like Boldin. If we should keep the pick, I would go with Moreno, have a good feeling about him."
