04/20 — By now you may have heard that for summer training camp, the Jets will be holding court in Cortland, N.Y.
We've announced on newyorkjets.com that the Jets will open this year's camp at SUNY Cortland on Friday, July 31. Additionally, all five full-squad minicamp practices on June 9-11 will be open to the public at the Atlantic Health Training Center in Florham Park, N.J., plus the annual "Family Night" practice at Hofstra University on Aug. 12 and three more open training camp practices in Florham Park on Aug. 22, 26 and 27.
But the headliner is Cortland, and many fans want to know: Why so far?
The short answer is because new head coach Rex Ryan has a vision for his Jets.
"I like having training camp away from your facility," Ryan said at his first news conference of the veteran minicamp last Thursday. "It has nothing to do with our facility or getting out of Florham Park — I love it here. These facilities are better than anybody’s in the league.
"It's about getting away. Getting away from the comforts of this place, of the surrounding areas, where their homes are, and putting them in a camp situation where all they have are each other. It won’t be someone going in this direction and someone going in that direction. There is nothing else. We are just going to be together. We are trying to build the chemistry of our football team in training camp."
Rex knows whereof he speaks. During his 10 seasons as a Baltimore assistant coach, the Ravens went to McDaniel College in Westminster, an hour from Baltimore in the Maryland countryside. The Ravens' defenses in that span, and especially the last four seasons with Ryan as their coordinator, enjoyed excellent seasons with their camp foundation.
Cortland is a hike for Jets fans in the New York metro area. It is about 200 miles to the northwest of Florham Park, near the Finger Lakes region and 45 minutes south of Syracuse. U.S. Route 81 north is the road to take to the State University of New York Cortland, a four-year college with an enrollment of 7,000 and ample facilities to prepare an NFL team with several weeks of camp.
We hope you can join us for the Jets' New York State of Mind experience. On the days you can't, Eric Allen and I will coordinate our complete coverage of the Jets on newyorkjets.com. And we'll have those practices here in the metro area as well. It's all about getting ready to hit the ground running (and blitzing?) for the 2009 season.
We'll have more information for you, such as exactly when training camp will end up in Cortland and more details on the open practices in New Jersey and on Long Island in the weeks ahead.

Mon, April 20, 2009 - 1:24pm ET"Hmm!! Gonna have to think this Cortland park training camp situation out .. I understand the concept of it all but I believe Rex can keep them at the facility & simulate being away not letting them go home ...Cost less to put them up at a local hotel then away field is a field any way you slice it ..Plus it will ease there minds being close to family & friends .. That's my take "
MikeMc Said:
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 1:33pm ET"I'm a little disappointed, I was really hoping they would have chosen Stony Brook Univ. for camp that was the rumour anyway, it is only 5 minutes from my house, I would have been at all the practices, now I won't be at any. I understand Rex's thinking on this though, its about team building not fan accomodating."

Mon, April 20, 2009 - 2:19pm ET"I want to thank Coach Ryan, Mr.Johnson, and the entire Jets organization for throwing us "upstate" fans a bone.I've been a lifelong fan and have never made it down to Hofstra because of time/distance constraints.Cortland is about 40 mins.from my home in Syracuse. There are many more Jets fans in CNY than most would think and there are more to gain. Can't wait to go with my 2 young sons/future fans!"

Mon, April 20, 2009 - 2:36pm ET"I live in cortland right now goin to college and I grew up my whole life 45 mins away in Owego, NY. I'm a huge jets fan which makes it hard to see them, being so far away,it is awesome they are comming up here! Usually all I can find around here are bills and giant merch, but this should change that!"
Dave Said:
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 2:52pm ET"I am one of many avid life long Jet fans from Upstate and think this is great. A few years ago the Jets came to Albany to scrimage the Giants but stopped after a 2 camps. I used to travel to Hofstra for camp every other year and Cortland will be a great opportunity for the Upstate fans. Lets hope the getaway = playoffs! Love what I see so far with Rex!"
Ira Said:
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 2:53pm ET"MikeMc, You nailed it. It is all about the team and they tried to accommodate the fans the best they could and they did a good job. Randy, Does Cortland have an indoor facilty in case of bad weather and will it be closed to the fans? "
Randy Lange Said:
"Ira, Brian Mulligan, our esteemed events & game operations director whom I sometimes like to call Dr. Brí, tells me Cortland does have an indoor facility to use in case of inclement weather, but as at Hofstra, indoor practices would be closed to the public."

Mon, April 20, 2009 - 3:19pm ET"i played for Cortland football the past four years and i agree with coach ryan, it's great to get the players away from everything and come up here. The town is a little "rundown" in some parts but it will do them good, not to mention maybe get us some more recruits for the future. Go Jets in '09"

Mon, April 20, 2009 - 3:30pm ET"I am a life long JETS fan from Ontario Canada and will be driving to Cortland to watch. I think it's good to spread the wealth and for the team to have things mixed up alittle. Maybe this will help them when they have to travel to the west coast this year a they can't do any worse than last year."

I think it's great, Rex is trying out different stuff. Brown is big enough and talented enough. I'm sure he can block. If he can catch we're in business!!!"

Tell me how many season ticket holders our from one of the most rural parts of our state. This was done for one reason only, to try to stimulate Cortland's week economy. Believe me Randy, the Jets will loose money in Cortland. 30 year season ticket holder"

It also gives the Jets players a real "camp" experience which I believe Ryan is seeking.......Sorry to all of the NJ/NY/LI fans but this is a real addition by subtraction for you guys!! GO JETS!!"

Tue, April 21, 2009 - 9:53am ET"Great decision for the Jets to go train in central New York. I was a former player at SUNY Cortland and believe me like Coach Ryan says its a place to go away where there won’t be someone going in this direction and someone going in that direction. There really is nothing else. The Facilities are great with two sprint turf fields next to each other and two more full field grass fields. "

Don't know what's in Cortland but in Ithaca, about 30 minutes from Cortland, there is a restaurant called the Ithaca Ale House. About 15-20 taps all microbrew as well as good food. Also while in the area check out the Ithaca Brewery for locally brewed beer."
Randy Lange Said:
"Thanks for the tap tip, Jeff. I've got my eye on the Flower Power IPA at the Ithaca Beer Co."

We're between Ithaca and Cortland and I can only hope my kids and I can catch at least one practice. Coming up from the Island, etc. I suggest 684 to 84 to 81; a really good ride that avoids a bit of the city and a lot of hills, curves and switches from 55mph to 65mph --->>>"
BeckyfromMizzou Said:
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 6:45pm ET"--> 55-65mph on Hwy17/I86. Enjoy some waterfalls while in the area too- Taughannock's great; Ithaca, Buttermilk, Filmore are easy access/good. I think the team should 'train' @ Watkins Glen- wear good shoes, watch for wet rocks, enjoy rainbows, an olympic size pool & a 1 1/2 mile hike up the gorge, including over 800 steps (including Jacob's ladder @ the end- 180+ continuous steps) & 19 waterfalls"

Planning on bringing a crew down to view practice and re-live the glory days (also became a Bruce fan while at Cortland). Cortland is a great spot for the many J-E-T-S fans from upstate to venture to. By the way, there is a great micro-brew in Syracuse (Middle Ages) and is on tap in Cortland."

Tue, July 14, 2009 - 9:06pm ET"For the best pizza in the area...take the 40 minute drive to Corning and go to Aniello's. Upstate New York welcomes the Jets...as I'm sick of all the Bills fans who don't notice their team isn't any good."

God willing i will be making the trips on the weekends to Cortland and try to sneak out/ and catch some of those mini-camp practices too. The Night Practice on 8/12 should also be cool to. As for Cortland Rex knows best. GO JETS11"
